Breaking Down Biden's New Trade War with China

Ben Rhodes is joined by guest hosts Daniel Kurtz-Phelan, Editor of Foreign Affairs magazine and Rana Ayyub, global opinion columnist for the Washington Post. Ben and Dan discuss a regrouped Hamas in northern Gaza, Secretary Blinken calling out the Israelis for not having a long term plan, Biden’s new tariffs on Chinese goods, the struggle to define America’s relationship with China, Russia’s new offensive in Kharkiv, and protests in Georgia over a foreign agent law. Then Ben and Rana talk about the Indian election, what a third Modi term would mean for India’s democracy, and attacks on Muslims and journalists in the country.

    Am I the only person who thinks “maybe politics shouldn’t matter here. Maybe we should do the MORAL thing and demand that Israel grant the Palestinians a state.” People will say “but what about the political consequences with our relationship with Israel and the world!?” But, what is necessary for us to decide to that these consequences don’t matter anymore? After WWII, we aided the coalition who gave Israel statehood. We did that because of the horrors that group of people had faced. I want us to do the same thing again now. Obviously, what the Jews went through during the Holocaust is worse (at least at a scale level, but I am not confident that there is as much of a difference on the individual level), but it is close enough for me to say that IF it was the right choice in the past, THEN it’s the right choice now. Damn the consequences on the political realm. Help these people and be the moral nation we have falsely claimed to be for centuries. Please. My generation needs a reason to love our country, this is an opportunity for us to develop that love.

    The creation of Israel was a horrible idea, having European Jews move to Israel and European governments not pay the price for what they did. We should not do anything like that again. As far as politics, it should absolutely matter. Israel is humiliating the US and defying everything we say, that has political consequences, including whether our allies and adversaries see us as a declining power. So Israel should be forced to move toward a 1 or 2 state solution as long as they want American weapons, or American diplomacy in the UN. If they are fine to get no American weapons, and diplomacy, and if they are fine to have American sanctions placed on them, Israel is free to deal with their situation however they want. But currently Israel relies heavily on the US and therefore, we have a right to demand what they do. No country should be able to geopolitically weaken the US.

Right or wrong, the fact the Israeli youth grew up while the peace process failed and violence and horror seemed to escalate, resulting in a hardening of their politics. From its founding, Israel had a strong left leaning element to its politics. But in more recent times, I have seen plenty of reporting on the collapse of the left in Israeli politics as the right has become more dominant. The US position towards Ukraine has been to get weapons to them as fast as we can? ... Seems more like to trickle arms to them to weaken Russia until Ukraine cedes the Donbas. Without the UK giving them Challenger and Storm Shadow they never would have had tanks and missiles, Germany had to have their arm twisted to give them Leopard, and the US armor contribution has been less than 50 (last generation) Abrahms.

  • @oohhboy-funhouse

    @oohhboy-funhouse

    I think part of the trickle is not getting congress to authorise greater amounts of funding early. It takes time to spin up production and without placing the orders the investments can't be made as few companies take on that kind of risk. Basic short-sightedness. The Abrahams issue was mostly Germany's doing. There is only so much money, by making US send Abrahams it took away from things US could only provide. There are plenty of Leopards, but EU can't make GIMLARS or have tons of Bradley which have been far more useful than Abrahams or GPICM or air defence missiles in bulk. Had US 60 billion a year over the last two years, we would have more than 50 Abrahams. Which generation of Abrahams doesn't matter too much since ODS Bradley's have proven themselves and the threat isn't tank on tank.

    13:05. Ben’s “Existential Question” is about how one combines foreign policy with politics. In regards to the politics of Israel and Palestine, I think it is not about how you keep the balance between bodies, and the real solution is to choose the side that benefits Your goals and side with them for as long as you can. Compromise means both sides have to stand up for themselves vehemently, and even as a mediator, it is impossible to advocate for two different entities. Therefore, if one side is weak but you want to support them, you have to support them with everything you got until they can match their opposition and form a compromise. Counter-argument: This approach means casting off some, if not all, the political alliances you already have. Choosing a side in politics suggests one’s position on the issues to the public, and changing positions makes one less predictable and reliable; a political pariah. The real problem with politics is not the fact everyone takes a side and sticks to that side to the bitter end, it is the fact that politics is a system like any other; everyone involved games it, manipulates it, breaks the rules without shame. The law is no different, business is no different, yet politics is so fluid and complex that anyone can be fooled into thinking that it is black and white. Changing one’s positions on politics is how all politicians make gains in their work, and those that don’t get pushed to the side by “fluid and complex” politics.

Unless maintaining (???/trust concerns abound) geopolitical location for U.S. military operations is somehow integral to the survival of our country… And WHO KNOWS the amounts of othr nation aid/💰 Israel now accepts? Seems fishy, smells fishy, & IF Israel is able to refuse U.S. assistance, in order to achieve only what Netanyahu/farrr right wants, let’s maybe force Israel to do without the U.S., UNTIL/UNLESS, a true democracy/non-criminal leadership majority returns. I’m definitely NOT anti-Israel, but am definitely ANTI-Bibi; his radical majority governance. On the djt side of the Gaza atrocities-we hear Jared Kushner discussing “sea-side” luxury development, & Bibi prays for djt… Bibi won’t gv Biden any stateside leverage re Gaza-& djt = Bibi in nearly every way. If nothing else it helps justify complaining about politics and politicians. And Biden has gotten a lot of really good things done during his term - more than I expected from him. If we can get a majority in both the House and the Senate _and_ keep Biden in office we might be able to get even more done over the next four years. If nothing else we need to keep Trump out of there. I'm hoping the election results are definitive enough to make Donald (or what's left of the Republican party) understand that he's a loser and needs to stop running. It's a shame the whole politics gig has been such a profitable grift for the guy.

    basics on China: engagement didn't work, China simply took advantage of the benefits of gaining technological knowledge and ability to export without much concern for its trading partners, and has always engaged in a patently (pun unintentional, but apt) unfair way with any business interests from other countries. China also has shown that it is leveraging its current economic power into a vastly expanded military capability (albeit with its endemic corruption and lack of internal truth telling calling into question its military readiness) and will continue to attempt to change/ dominate the world order. and... there are extreme existential risks to the world, including nuclear, global warming, resource depletion. An essential component to solving or mitigating any of them requires deep global cooperation, which obviously includes a robust US China relationship. Therefore, the recipe for the US and the West: extreme containment combined with extreme diplomacy, and ignoring all the white knuckles on the hands of the best and the brightest who attempt to navigate this path.

    These tariffs won't work... Except making everything more expensive. How many jobs came back from Trump's tarrifs? Marginal at best. And China's trade policy where they ignore Trump's trade deal shows that this won't work. This isn't the 1800s where chinese companies are paying the tariffs to import into the US. These are american companies paying higher tarrifs, and passing along the prices to American consumers... China is definitely gonna feel the pain! China's worst case scenario is they move manufacturing to vietnam which has a bunch of chinese owned factory... And why put tarrifs on things we barely make here. Wouldn't tax incentives for companies and consumers be a more effective solution.

    US lucky to have Katherine Tai, she should probably run for president. She seems like she would be broadly popular. Smart like a lot of the national strategy crowd, but none of the military baggage.

    I think I'm going to be a former listener of the pod after this. And it's not because anything horrible happened. It's that Ben Rhodes lives up to the stereotype that Republicans pinned on him in 2016. The vocabulary means well but it's so desperately weak. Avoid war with China? Really? Avoiding conflict at all costs is a sure-fire way to ensure one occurs over something really vital. Rhodes never talks about deterrence. And I don't mean nuclear deterrence; I mean having credible forces and policies that would readily demonstrate that the risk to Chinese standing is greater than any potential benefit that might be gained. And as it turns out, our military needs some pretty significant help and reform.

    Wow It's amazing how you have a discussion on Indian Elections and invite someone who has clear views against a particular party (BJP) and Individual (Modi) and is hyper partisan (Nothing wrong with bring so partisan but then you can't just have one sided view then on your show) No pretence also to present a balanced and fair view point itseems Least we can expect is you call a popular Indian psephologist who can give you real ground situation here

    no problem with your desire! but this particular channel is made up of former aides of president obama, they always present from the liberal/leftist perspective. the exceptions are when they have guests who are people from the right who share their views on a specific issue. for instance, they invite people from the channel the Bulwark (who are former conservative politics aides) on Pod Save America because they share the same view on the issue of stopping Donald Trump from being elected, as well as some of the same views regarding the rights of the LGBT community. But they dont just call up people they disagree with so that they can share a message that they disagree with because they are genuinely less of a news program and more of a political program.

    @@doubletdoublect3248point taken. I am not a Modi fan myself but this was a particularly stupid interview that hurt liberal cred more than anything. 1. Indian right loves Israel because they are inspired by Hitler 2. Strong independent journalist are doing great work on X(negligible reach), tiktok (a platform that was banned in India years ago). 3. I will not get into the details of why her comments would help BJP (Assuming you are not from India & don't know much about Indian election) The truth is she did the interview to help her own career in the US. She doing this interview in the middle of an election doesn't help any liberal in India

    Yeah, being critical of modi is clearly proof of hyper-partisanship, it couldn't be that he's a corrupt and incompetent racist who's desperate for scapegoats (and ways to put down protest movements, of which their have been plenty during his regime).
