Pod Save the World

Pod Save the World

Like most people, Pod Save America cohost Tommy Vietor thought foreign policy was boring and complicated until he got the education of a lifetime working for President Obama’s National Security Council. It was a crash course that taught him two things: anyone can understand these issues, and we all have an obligation to try.

That’s why he started Pod Save the World-a weekly podcast that breaks down international news and foreign policy developments, but doesn’t feel like homework. Each week, he and former deputy national security advisor Ben Rhodes walk you through the latest developments with a variety of experts and take you behind the scenes of big decisions with the people who were there. New episodes every Wednesday.

But that's not all! Pod Save the World is now also the home to Pod Save the UK! Every Thursday comedian Nish Kumar and journalist Coco Khan are joined by politicians, experts, and famous friends to unpick the latest news, look for solutions, and inspire action.

    Calling the social democrats the equivalent of the Democrats is crazy to me. These are neoliberal, but in principle socialist parties. The liberals may be closer to the democrats, somewhat liberal and what the us would consider 'left' on cultural issues, but full on captalist in their economic ideology.

    So apparently the IDF killed almost 300 Palestinians, 3 of their own hostages, and maybe friendly fired their own unit commander to death, all just to free 4 hostages. Understand the Israeli military celebrating this (they desperately need the win), but seeing the US defense establishment hailing this as a huge success was genuinely disturbing. Is this what we can expect US operational "success" to look like going forward?

    I had to listen back several times to understand you were trying to say Magyar Péter's name. XD Buddy. You absolutely butchered it. Do better. And as for why people jumped on the bandwagon: because very few people actually want Orbán in the seat, but there has been nobody good enough to beat him. To be fair... am pretty sure Magyar Péter is either a trojan horse or a clown, but I'm still very very happy Orbán took a big hit. I just wish it had been a centrist or leftist party who dealt him the damage, and not one of his disgruntled buddies, who did not get to steal any more money. (he used to be the former justice minister's hubby, and also head of some govt businesses that stopped the payouts the moment the divorce went through. Guy is pissed as all hell.)

    WTF Macron! Did you have to do this just days after D Day Commemoration, election will be 2 weeks before Bastille Day, a month before the opening of the Paris Olympics, just days before the July 4th elections in the UK. Jeez, between Sunak and Macron, it's like it's a race to give us global anxiety on the road to fascism... Yeah, I know, Sunak isn't a fascist and probably far right will not win many votes there... But back to Macron, ya done good on the D Day events- at least from the American perspective. Why make the French go through this right now? And yeah, Tangara 180, you know that you have to vote for him. Just like we have NO CHOICES whether to vote for Joe BIden. Though, at least Joe Biden is likeable. Oh if we had only taught about WWII and fascism in school.

    The self described “anti-globalist” authoritarian movements are in reality globally coordinated politically in a way that the pro-western, pro-democracy, groups just aren’t. They have the same set of people working in every country to undermine democracy while the pro-democracy groups mostly focus own their own domestic politics and try not to interfere with each other’s elections.

    In a fair democratic election, I have no problem with right, far-right parties getting votes and seats. I do say fair and democratic though. America is not democratic, and does not have representative voting considering that it can come down to 5 states who decides the presidency. The UK also has a stupid two-party system. These two countries are living in the past. A true democracy will develop and allow for smaller parties to gain support, whether they be left or right or in the centre. But to only have two options in a winner takes all electoral system in 2024 is ridiculous. Society is diverse and the elections should reflect that fairly. Only having two viable parties, like the US and UK is just not representative. Like we see recently people scoffing at republicans voting for trump.....who else can they vote for, the only other guy who has a chance?

Even a U.S. general said on CNN special forces never even would have launched an operation like this if they thought there was even a potential for the IDF claimed civilian casualty death count of 100. We will see how it goes but so far every time there was snap elections in France, the party who surged to power did not win the next presidential elections. It is usually a trap and it can delay winning the presidential elections. The far right wants to appear as the solution but apart from promising to end or limit immigration, they have no policy and they never manage to limit the immigration. In the UK, they voted Brexit because they had enough of migrants but they ended up with more migrants than pre-Brexit. Trump did not finish his "beautiful wall" and Meloni has not controlled immigration yet and some people are disappointed.

    I live in Germany and don't believe it was the Greens dragging Scholz down. They're very unpopular on the right, yes, but those people already didn't like Scholz. Personally I think it's their third partner, the FPD, dragging both parties down. They're liberals in the classical sense and obsessed with cutting any kind of public spending while giving out tax breaks that immediately cancel out whatever they saved in cuts. They got the Ministry of Finance in the coalition agreement (huge strategic mistake for the SPD/Greens IMO) and have put the brakes on pretty much every spending initiative the SPD & Greens propose. So the SPD & Greens are unable to deliver anything to their base, and those voters are leaving. Meanwhile the FDP itself has become wildly unpopular and is polling right on the edge of the 5% threshold to enter the German Bundestag at all (I think they got 5.2% in the European elections). So IMO it's just a terrible coalition where every party is miserable and no one is getting what they want. Lately it feels like the only laws getting passed are things that cost people more money out of pocket (because the FDP refuses to approve more government spending) and this is pissing people off.

    For anyone who doesn't understand cricket, there's a very good tutorial on KZread called something like "Cricket for Americans" or "Cricket for baseball fans". I don't totally get it either, but it makes a lot more sense after watching the video; it's about as complicated as baseball overall, but the scoring and the way to determine when the "innings" and game end are quite different. EDIT: It's called "Cricket explained for baseball fans". I'd link it but KZread apparently frequently deletes comments that contain links.

    Special forces operations occur overwhelmingly at night for both tactical reasons (night vision advantages) and to reduce collateral damage. "We own the night" is a common slogan for many special forces operating companies. So why did this take place during the day? Why would you give your enemy an advantage (daylight) when you don't have to? We'll never have a definitive answer, but situations like these support a growing belief that Israel is designing its operations to maximize collateral damage and civilian death. These beliefs are of course aided by the statements from leaders within the Israeli government. I'm also quite disturbed by reports that this raid used an aid truck and was launched from the humanitarian pier that we built. Doesn't this put all other aid workers at risk of harm? Not to mention the criminality of using aid as a cover for military operations. The whole thing is quite disturbing.

  • @benzolobster
    @benzolobster10 сағат бұрын

    Also it's not even paranoid to think endangering aid workers is entirely deliberate considering Israel's endless attempts to disrupt aid delivery and distribution. What the Biden admin was even thinking directly involving US forces in any of this debacle is just absolutely baffling.
