Uganda’s Stolen Innocence - BBC Africa Eye documentary

#BBCAfricaEye investigates a shocking rise in child sexual abuse and incest in northern Uganda and discovers that justice often comes at a price.
Subscribe: / bbcafrica
In the wake of the pandemic, reports emerged from Uganda of a 300% increase in girls aged 10 -14 becoming pregnant. Sexual violence has been further fuelled in the north by the traumatic legacy of a 20-year insurgency led by notorious warlord Joseph Kony. At Gulu Regional Hospital, a quarter of babies are born to girls below the age of consent, and cases of sexual abuse of girls as young as three are being reported. Scant resources and alleged police corruption means that justice often comes at a price.

Medical report showed the girl was defiled, she identified the culprit only for the PP to reject the file for lack of evidence. When we tried to get independent bodies like Human rights, Probation and child fund, the case file disappeared without a trace. I’ve been in Northern Uganda for approx 2 years and this documentary isn’t even a tip of the mess there. A few months back, I witnessed a first hand scenario where a gentleman working with Local Gov’t (LG) was looking for a man who had impregnated his 14 yr old niece. Why? He wanted to hand over the girl to the man officially for marriage. But the guy responsible for the pregnancy had escaped when he’d heard about it. LG gentleman then called police and wanted us arrested because we didn’t help him catch the guy. A very high ranking police officer showed up and to my dismay, was the origin of the “get her married the her perpetrator” idea. I thought he was joking until he said “That’s how we do our things here”. It’s then that I knew that the plight of underage girls was far from over…

@@Msambweni The rates of sexual abuse of minors in Africa is horrific. Its many times higher than other cultures. In South Africa alone. 700 girls 10 years old, show up to hospitals pregnant every year. They are all from the African natives, there are zero 10 year olds pregnant from white or Indian community. Its really bad for African Americans too. I read a study about a native peoples, that showed over 90% of girls are molested before 10 years old. In most of cultures the numbers are like 5%. Africa has the worst human rights for pretty much everything. Women being killed by their husbands is also really high in Africa. Africa still has oppressive treatment of women and girls through FGM, child marriage and multiple wives.
