The UFC is into ENTERTAINMENT, first & last. The average audiences don't have the knowledge to understand, much less appreciate, this kind of extremely technical skill-based sporting event or even general MMA, where the permutation to get a win is much more showy, wild, and unruly. Anyway, whenever/wherever the dollar sign dictates, entertainment triumphs over actual skilled-based sports. INCIDENTALLY, that is why promotions like Khabib's "Eagle FC" didn't go anywhere: Khabib has ZERO understanding of, or tolerance for, entertainment. He wanted to do a pure skill-based fighting organization. Very little audience & money would flow into that!

If submissions are on the clock doesn't stop the submission in many rule sets. Also the announcers adore gordon, you heard one critique of his bleach beard (cause that announcer is a mans man) and think theyre conspiring against him? That's reaching. They got excited because as someone said that would be te biggest upset in YEARS. Gordon got no hate in this video at all.

In overtime they take turns trying to get submissions from back control. If there aren’t any submissions, then the person who escapes the fastest wins.

So I'm not familiar with the rules of Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in the slightest, but can someone answer if Gordon Ryan's victory here was well-earned/deserved? Controversial? He didn't look particularly impressed, and the commentators called it a "strange win".

No it’s not controversial. As for BJJ, there are a variety of rule sets that exist and this is one of them. Gordon is p4p #1 by a mile and he is typically used to getting the finish of most guys. That’s why he doesn’t look excited

@@JimC607 they both have an opportunity to submit each other in overtime. It went to 3 overtime’s and neither was able to submit the other. So after 3 overtime’s it just goes to the fastest escape throughout the overtime periods.
