I was upset by the call, but when I saw the replay, I couldn't deny it was not a good screen. Aaliyah really lost her focus in the last minute of this game. She didn't even bother to box out for that rebound when Clark missed her last free throw for the game. Sucks for UConn but I don't think they were conned out of a win.

Yeah, you won't blame Aaliyah for this. Firstly, Paige didn't use the screen well but I don't see anyone blaming her for anything (typical fan favorite). Secondly, she boxed out her player on that rebound, Nika was the one who didn't box out and I understand it was because her player was much taller than her. I'm just glad Aaliyah is finally going to the W because y'all don't deserve her.

I have now watched this play twenty times. I agree what Edwards did was a foul. Prior to that Marshall pushing off of Edwards to get close to Beukers should have been called if all things are equal. The guard pushing off the center ,no call but aren't both things fouls?

  • @jcas9388

I watched the foul from the upper camera this morning. Unlike the close up replay done on the broadcast you can CLEARLY see Edwards taking a GIANT step with her left leg. That alone made it obvious moving screen. Then add in the left elbow coming up and out left no choice for the ref. Had that happened in any of the first 3 quarters NO ONE would question the call. Too bad this CORRECT late call is getting so much attention. Whomever is doing the commentating for this video needs to rewatch the body of Edwards. It was NOT a "tiny" bit of movement.

Yeah, I think you're right. I think Uconn over-achieved all season. And we made it back to the Final Four, which is not a bad score. Nika Muhl had the best game; She shot 42% from the floor and 50% from 3. 9 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals, against 3 turnovers and 3 fouls. More to the point, she played 40 minutes and was a facehugger on Catlin Clark, who had 21 points versus 41 the game before. Her draft stock went up, I'm thinking. She might even go in the first round. You can't buy defense like that, and with Nika you get it for free. KK did fairly well too. She shot 60% from the floor, and only missed one two pointer. Her failing was from 3, where she shot 25%. Her defense too was on point. Her stat line was... eh, normal. 14 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals, against 4 turnovers and 4 personals. Nothing special, but a solid, workmanlike, journeyman performance. Ashlynn... was a disappointment. We won't be too hard on her; she's a frosh, for bork's sake. Her D was good, but she only shot 25% from the floor and 20% from 3. She did get 7 boards and 2 steals and an assist, and didn't foul or turn the ball over much. It was a pretty good performance, especially since it was her first time. But we needed a great one from her-- or failing that Qadence should have seen at least some time-- and we didn't get one. Paige and Aaliyah were the big problems. Not that they didn't have a good game, they did. But neither one had a great one, and we needed both to do so. They got 17 points each, but only combined for 12 boards and their shooting percentages were off the mark in such a big game. You're right again: our defense was great the whole game, but the offense didn't make it. We should have been up by 20 or 30 in the first half when we were holding their shooting performance in the 20s and 30s. They'd have not come back from that, not against our D. We needed a superstar on offense, and we didn't get one, plain and simple. How on earth Iowa's defense held both of them under 20 points was a miracle; that just doesn't happen. But it did. Paige missed 3 or 4 threes that were uncontested, when she normally knocks those in like 8-ball in the corner. Aaliyah on Hanna Stulke should have been easy game, coach, but it wasn't either. I hate to say it, but we didn't bring enough offense in our kit bags this time. We lost, and we deserved to lose. Any one of those things and we'd have won. But all of them failed us. Ref the call... I hate that it happened. No guarantee Paige would have hit the shot, of course, but she should have been allowed to take it. You're gonna make a moving screen call with 9 second left and a 1 point difference? Mind-boggling. But Paige had the right of it in her post-game comments: she said it was her fault, because they weren't up enough for it to not make any difference. And she was right. This has been fun, guys. I really don't care who wins the final game and I won't watch. The season is over for me, and the W doesn't interest me. I only watched the highlights in some games because Dorka was playing. Maybe I'll see some more with Dorka, and Lou, and Aaliyah and Nika playing. But in the final analysis, I'm a Uconn fan, not a basketball fan. See you next year!

Yeah.... keep in mind that #24 has multiple blocked shots in this exact situation in the tournament. Setting an illegal pick and taking the defender out of the play MATTERS. It removes the ability of Marshall to disrupt the shot. It's 100% a good call. Edwards wasn't moving her feet, but she did move her upper body, and extend an elbow INTO the defender. It's an easy call. Uconn should have set a clean screen and we wouldn't have been robbed of a great end to the game.

It was “blatent” because Marshall flopped. The tv angle is horrible because she didn’t extend her arms she just leaned a little bit which was what everyone was doing on both teams throughout the game most of the time. If you’re not going to call a foul earlier in the game when it might actually affect a possession, why would you call it at the end whenever it didn’t even affect what was going on???? Plus Nika was doing better than anyone has ever done on Caitlin all year. She was shutting her down off ball and that was why Caitlin was cold in the first half. Obviously no one was going to stop her from hitting some shots but she sure as heck did the best that anyone ever could do

She might have been able to throw up a shot although Hannah would have been right there. Iowa also had a foul to give maybe they foul with a second left ect. I actually despise refs at college and pro levels almost never make any call in a potential game winning situation and not just Bball. This goes for offense and defense. They should all have video review on any controversial call in the last minute of each half. They should also allow 1 coach review for each half with no penalty If the call is reversed and a TO taken away if they lose the decision on the floor call. But this play wasn't just a light brush pick it was an obvious left foot moving 2ft on the moving screen with a lowered shoulder and elbow bump that actually hooked Marshall's arm. Your arms have to be next to the body not elbows out. Good call.

It was an obvious moving screen but I understand the outrage because Edwards gets away with those screens throughout the tournament. Tough call in a game deciding possession in such a big game. Stuelke was the key to Iowa's win and Kate Martin had huge buckets in the final minutes of that game. Refs definitely helped Iowa stay in the game but UConn was not executing down the stretch. Bueckers needs to step up in those situations and demand the ball. If Sarah Strong is as good as advertised- I wouldn't be surprised if UConn is back in the Final Four next year.

NBA players, WNBA players, college players, college coaches, virtually all sports analysts, current and former referees (some in the comments) agree that the call was outrageous. But the Iowa homers and casual fans know more than those whose lives revolve around college basketball. Ask any referee: “In a typical game, how many times do you say to yourself, ‘I COULD call a foul there, but I won’t.’ “ It happens all the time. As one ref said, that may have been “technically” an illegal screen, but you assess the situation and the impact on the play. And (he said), in that situation, with that kind of play, you never blow the whistle. What’s so hard to understand about this concept? I’m amazed at people’s incapacity for slightly nuanced thinking. “Duh a foul is a foul.”

Paige shouldn't have to score enough points that a call that should have been a play on doesn't effect the outcome. Without foul calls UConn wins by five points. Refs called eighteen fouls on UConn, only nine on Iowa. Free throws had even a greater disparity. Iowa made ten of fourteen foul shots while UConn made three of four, giving Iowa a two point win. Not saying the fix was in but you couldn't design a better one and money is always the objective.

My partner said Iowa/Caitlin was going to be in the title game before the tournament even started; and especially after they let them beat LSU. He couldn't say whether they would win it all but he adamantly said he thought they would be in the title game. The NCAA is going to ride Caitlin all the way to the bank. LSU really messed up their plans by not only winning that game last year but the way they won it. And the real teams have suffered for it. First LSU (seeding & bracket placement), then UCLA (bracket placement), now UConn. Even though I thought UConn was overrated after their injuries they're better than Iowa. But UConn can't complain because both of these teams got an easy path to the final four. They only had to beat one really good team each and that was in the elite 8.

Nothing against Caitlin but I have to call out the politics that surround her. They don't push Paige because even though UConn has had great white players Geno also have great black ones that have played with them. Iowa is pretty much an all white team from a state which is considered to be one of the whitest in the union. I've called out Iowa all year and NO ONE, not even back2sports, has mentioned how the NCAA has promoted, pushed, and pontificated this team; because it's BEYOND OBVIOUS. I could go on for hours about it but I'll just mention the polls. No matter who Iowa lost to they never fell below 5 or 6 this entire season, EVEN IF THE TEAM WAS UNRANKED. And how they did the seeding hurt 2 teams: LSU & UCLA, who just so happen to have to play each other in the sweet 16. LSU threw a HUGE monkey wrench in the plan by not only beating them in that title game but destroying them. And even with all Caitlin has had going for her this season, had Angel Reese did what she was supposed to do LSU still beats them & moves on to the Final Four (see my comment in this video of Back2Sports). kzread.info/dash/bejne/qnyYm9evXbncos4.html&lc=UgzNyFi5OIQQfeqnVrR4AaABAg

Did Uconn actually commit 3+ times as many fouls Iowa? Very unlike them.

@@RichardIILionheart I think it could be interpreted that UCONN was CALLED for 3+ times as many fouls. Not sure they committed that many more. Granted a couple were given at the end of the game, but there were plenty of non-calls throughout the game, until, of course, 8 secs to go.

Haha...people want the theatrics of the no call? Like in the NBA? Is that why the past 2 NCAAW games have out rated viewership of any NBA game including the NBA FINALS?

Of course your right - as there is nothing more exciting than a player flopping like a seal trying to get a charge call. That is clearly why WCB is doing so well in the ratings.

Is anybody besides me starting to feel like there's that ugly element of gambling starting to have an effect on these games???! Entire shows on ESPN detailing over/unders/spreads etc, and then watching some of these anomalies occur shooting wise..not putting Q in (which I kept hollering at my TV!) Just all the back of the rim/side of the rim shots...that call/legit or not wasn''t as bad as when Clark pushed KK back about five feet on her ass to "make some space"....UConn supposedly favored by 2.5 was the last thing I saw...what was the score again???! Welcome to WBB Draft KIngs and onlne gambling etc. This ain't the NBA/NFL I've got 33 seasons (since '91) invested in the Huskies, I would hate to think so.

Using the reasons why college hoop fans HATE the NBA is a terrible argument. Extra steps, blatant fouls excused? Please don't bring this to college hoops. It was a CLEAR moving pick that would be called at any other part of the game.

Nothing is better than ensuring every single infraction is picked up to make sure these players are not cheating to get the ball in the basket. It was much better to see justice served on a player moving slightly on the pick versus seeing if PB would hit the shot or not. I AM just joking I do take your point but really would have liked to have seen if Paige would have hit that shot or not.

You don’t know nothing about the NBA if you think in any respect the NCAA is worse than it. The NBA is the most corrupt sports league in sports history. Rigging Lakers outcomes is the NBA’s primary job. In the last two years you could take the free throw differential of the second, third, and fourth place teams and the Lakers would still be well ahead. That’s how absurdly far in first they are. The Lakers have shot well over +1000 more free throws than their opponents over the last two seasons. Second place doesn’t even crack +350. The Lakers have shot more free throws than their opponents in 19 out of the last 20 games. The one game they lost was by 4 free throws. The Lakers just had a 31-11 free throw advantage against Minnesota. This was despite Lebron not playing the entire game and Anthony Davis sitting for 3 and a half quarters. Everyone who loves sports should be up in arms over the outright rigging of games in the NBA. Because they aren’t the problem will only get worse and spread to other sports. This little moving screen video will be small potatoes for the corruption we see on a daily basis.
