Kaitlyn Chen to UConn - Is this a good move for Chen & UConn?

Спорт

We take a look at Kaitlyn Chen going to UConn? Was this the player that UConn needed or should that have gone after two bigs in the portal?

I also saw parallels with the Lopez-Senechal transfer. Originally it looked redundant, but it looked like a genius move by the end of the season. One thing to bear in mind is that UConn (and quite possibly Chen) knows more about the health of the guards/wings than we know. Maybe they're convinced that some of these players are unlikely to get through a season intact. And my impression is that Griffin probably won't be available until the season's well underway. The other thing that could come into play is that the Big East doesn't have much in the way of quality bigs, so a 4-guard lineup might match up against them better. Admittedly Chen doesn't address their biggest need, but if she, Berube, and Auriemma see a fit I'm inclined to accept that.

This was a great move for both Uconn AND for Kaitlyn Chen. Chen was the best offensive player on a defense-first team. It was proven last year that we couldn't guard the top scorers last year without Muhl in the game. Chen can take on that role and give us some more points as well. Then you have the questions related to the health of Ducharme and Fudd. Both of them are outstanding kids, but from a basketball standpoint only, Ducharme may never play again and Azzi has knees like light bulbs. Both are very talented juniors who have rarely played. I mean the chances of even one of them playing a full year are remote from my chair. In addition, we really only have one point guard on the roster. No way Geno is going to play Paige at the point. She's going to be a shooting guard/forward to maximize points. Also. when Paige is playing point, everyone stands around watching her instead of moving without the ball. Everyone was up in arms when Lopez-Senechal came to Uconn saying we were guard-heavy. We all know how that turned out and we have now gone through 3 straight years of the Uconn locker room turning into a hospital ward. From Kaitlin Chen's point of view. Uconn was the only place to be. I don't agree with the author at all who said he believes she would have been a better fit elsewhere. Lopez-Senechal went from playing at a small school people outside of Connecticut never heard of to a number 5 pick in the WNBA draft. That's coaching, in addition to Lou's talent. Chen saw that. Chen has a degree from an Ivy league school, now it's time to prepare for the WNBA. No school does that better than Uconn, as well as giving more exposure to the athlete. In an article this morning that I read, there are 18 former UConn players signed to an 18-spot training camp WNBA roster in 2024, and every team except for the Chicago Sky features at least one Husky. Enough said. Women's college basketball is just like any other sport. Competition is a great thing and it makes the whole team better. I saw how South Carolina threw 10, 11, 12 girls at other schools this year. Everyone got minutes and everyone stayed fresh. This is a great problem to have.

I remember with LouConn, the thought was she would fill in for 10 minutes a game. Geno said it only took one or two practices before figuring out that someone that started the previous year would be coming off the bench. If Kaitlyn is another Lou, she will fit in just fine. Having Paige sit a bit longer when she subs out is also a good thing. Plus letting the reserves in for longer at the end of games will prepare them for the following season. I also think the practices are going to be intense. Iron sharpens Iron.

@@chasnami For the most part, KK, the other point guard sits next year; she will play, but will only get a dozen minutes per game next season compared to the 35 minutes she played last when there were so many injuries. Or, this will completely inspire her to improve her game immensely, as this is what will be necessary to outplay Chen! That said, Chen is with the team just the one season; it will make others hugger for time and to get better. Some still will not be good enough no matter what the efforts, they will get little time, they will look forward to the following season when upper classmen graduate, leaving them more opportunities. Others might jump into the portal and go play at a lessor program...

Now since beers committed to Oklahoma UCONN should potentially look at these players. Or look overseas for a tall Forward/Center. Quality players in portal still available for backup plan. There are other taller ladies in the portal too that I’m sure can make a layup with our skilled guards passing abilities. Arkansas Pine-Bluff - Maya Peat, 6’6, C, Sr. (10.5 ppg, 6.4 rpg) North Dakota State - Elle Evans, 6’3, G, Soph. (15.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg) Arkansas - Maryam Dauda, 6’4, F, Soph. (10.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg) Bryant - Mariona Planes Fortuny, 6’3, F, Sr. (16.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.8 apg). Potential starting lineup: Jana (C) 6’8 wingspan, Strong (PF), Paige (SF), Azzi (SG), Chen (PG); Could potentially be a nightmare match for most team. All 5 can shoot the 3pt shot. Geno will figure out the lineups. All the guard help can help full court press the entire game. Morgan Cheli is a sleeper as a point guard (check out her passing skills in the Jordan Classic and McDonald’s game). The growth of Ice, KK and Shade will be awesome too. Geno has options 😊. Small ball for UCONN got them to the final Four now imagine 2 more fresh quality bodies to rest starters. That Iowa game potentially doesn’t come gone to the final few possessions. Faithful UCONN fans don’t panic and trust the process. Men’s and Women’s National Champions next year. 🎉🎉❤

Watching Chen play in the NCAA tourney, she showed a lot of experience and skill. She is a good replacement for Nika as she is selfless. I think she can score more if she wanted to. She is different than either KK or Shade - Paige can play 1-4 without trouble so really KK and Chen as point guards, Shade and Azzi as shooting guards and the other players like Griffin, Ducharmey and others you mention can slot in 3 or 4 while Ice/Jana and maybe Petterson or another 6'2-6'3 player on the post- We still don't know how people will respond coming back from injury. The new freshmen may not start right away because they need to learn the system- Hopefully Gino will have a lot of difficult line-ups to match up against different defenses and styles. I like Chen for her proven ability and savy. She can help the young ones too.

A dilemma? What to do with too many good players. Nice dilemma. Let's look at what is going on and figure it out. UP FRONT: El Alfy, Strong, Brady. BEERS WOULD BE A GREAT ADDITION. SMALL FORWARD: Griffin, Ducharme (?), Bueckers, Fudd, Shade SHOOTING GUARD: Bueckers, Fudd, Shade, Samuels, Chen POINT GUARD: KK, Bueckers, Chen That adds up to 12. Rookies will only play in garbage time their first year. Bueckers is listed 3 times? Something very interesting happened last year. We knew Bueckers was "out of position" and we thought that would pose a problem. It never did!! In fact, it proved to be a very positive move for UCONN. Although lacking height and toughness (brute strength!) she more than made up for it with savvy and basketball skills which wouldn't allow the opposition to 'take advantage' of her 'out of position'. But, offensively is where the big surprise came into play. She was like a floating linebacker in football. Because she had 'no defined position on offense' she created havoc with the opposing team's defensive strategy. And using her ability 'to make things happen' proved to be a very positive effect it had on every game. So, the guard position can be interchangeable. Fudd and Shade can give Griffin some time off the court. KK can play at 'warp factor speed' at the point and Chen can work a more disciplined offense. Ducharme (?), we don't know about and Bueckers, Fudd, Shade and Samuels can drill 3 pointers at the shooting guard position. FOUL PROBLEM SITUATIONS? Not as scary as it was for the past 3 years. The front court will take care of itself (I hope Beers comes aboard!) and the guard spot and respective playing time will be dictated by where Paige is playing at any given time. Do I like their chances? 🙂 You bet! In fact, all of us are already waiting for opening night!

As a UConn fan, I am thrilled that this is now official. I think that Kaitlyn is a good fit because she is an experienced point guard who will help take the load off of Paige. Whenever Geno wants to have Paige play off-ball you can have Kaitlyn play the point while being reliable. I honestly kind of see Kaitlyn as a "put on the court and forget about her player" fit for UConn. You know you can trust her to be a playmaker who keeps things going smoothly while focusing on how to incorporate everyone else on the floor. However, as you stated, it is a concern on who will be the one to miss out the most... This is how I think the rotations will be: PG: Kaitlyn Chen (KK off the bench and Paige sliding in here occasionally). Shooting guard: Ashlynn/Azzi to start and Allie Ziebell coming off the bench for a few minutes a game. Wing: Paige (Q and Morgan Cheli off the bench with limited minutes). PF: Sarah Strong with Patterson off the bench. C: El Alfy with Ice off the bench. Not sure when Aubrey will come back but would imagine her coming off the bench for the PF position. Caroline: I have a hard time of figuring out where Caroline will fit if anywhere at all. I could see her going in the three spot but healthy or not, she won't get many minutes. This is all my opinion but please lmk your comments and ideas. I honestly can't wait to see how Geno plays a season with a (hopefully) fully healthy loaded team!

Based on Geno's experience with injuries over the last two years this makes perfect sense, Geno is taking no chances. UConn does have two more unproven guards coming in at the college level, however, Chen is an immediate impact player on both offense and defense, she is without a doubt a better shooter than Nika M. Last year's #3 UCLA had no answer for Chen (24pts) UCLA barely won that game against Princeton. Lastly, if WNBA scouts weren't considering Chen, they will now, being on a bigger stage at UConn, particularly for the hard non-conference schedule UConn traditionally plays. Remember Lou Lopez from Fairfield, she ended up #5 in the draft. If Chen's end goal is to make it to the WNBA it is hardly "dumb."

In addition the adding Kaitlyn Chen allows Bueckers to play more at the 3 when the team requires it. In addition, this could challenge KK Arnold to have her raise her level of play to a level that she didn’t even realize she had in herself. Also this facilitates Geno to play with the intensity he so wanted but couldn’t bc of a lack of a reliable bench te.g. the game vs Duke in the NCAA tournament.

Depth never hurts as we have seen over the last few seasons with UConn. UConn's WBB weekly suggested this will allow Paige to roam more, as she and KK were the only returing ball handlers prior to Chen. Also the freshmen wore down at the end of last season having played far more minutes and games than they had in their HnS careers. Getting some rest will definitely help overall. And who knows how the returning injured will perform, if at all? Re bigs. I don't think they could have gotten both Beers and Gardiner. While preferring Beers, I would be happy with Gardiner if Beers goes elsewhere. Looking across the portal, there seem to be a couple of other bigs, lesser known (likely because not major conferences) but having size, scoring and rebounding. Who knew Lou when she came to UConn? So there could be a surprise out there if neither Beers nor Gardner come to UConn.

Depth is key. Better practices make for a better team. Competition among guards will be fierce which will only make all our guards better. Uconn will bring the injured along very, very slowly (learning from Paige here). As everyone gets healthy, Geno can amp the defensive pressure...been a long time since UConn had the luxury of using pressure more in a big game. There will be no end of playing time during the BE season to figure out the rotation but guessing the 3 guards who finished last season, start in the fall (might change during the course of the year of if Chen or a freshman outperform in practice. Historically, Geno favors two bigs if he has them but can't tell that right now. Set up correctly, the huskies will be a lethal mix of offensive efficiency and fierce defense if rotation can be worked out. If they get Beers then watch out world; the women will essentially mimick the 2024 men's team and will have the horses to take on USC and SC and the depth to just keep moving on both sides of the ball -- UConn pace for a full game has always been exceedingly hard for other teams to match but, as I said, it's been a long time since Geno knew his team had that extra gas at the end of the season (we have ended every season lately worn down and it showed). Let's be greedy; let's get all the talent we can each and every year cause that is what our nationally ranked competition is doing.

We don't know when Azzi, Aubrey or Yanna will be ready. We don't know if Caroline will come back. That means this team has freshman and sophomore level playing experience. Paige is the only veteran player for the start of the season and our most reliable scoring threat. Chen ( experienced scoring threat) will help relieve that pressure on Paige, she'll likely be the starting PG. KK will come off the bench for her. Ash will start until Azzi is ready. Paige at the 3, then Sarah and Jana. Q an Yanna will come in for Sarah and Ice for Jana. Geno still wants Paige off ball for whatever reason but I’m starting to accept it, she'll be great wherever. We still need another big but I think Beers is going to Oklahoma.

First, of 14 players we have right now, 9 have a year or less of experience, 2 of which have any meaningful game time, 3 have some game experience and 4 have zero college time. We have 7 players as of now that we might be able to count on (and tell me you aren't worried about Aubrey's offense, Caroline's durability, either of Azi's knees). 2nd I am sure coach would much rather play 10 players for 20 minutes than to play 5 for 40 minutes like he's had to do. 20 minutes or less in seasonal games is where we want to be at. To win games and do that, you need t least 10 players you trust and are not "developing". We will also have options to play different sets against different lineups. Chen isn't insurance, she is needed. She also gives KK another year to work on becoming the floor general.

KK Arnold & Kaitlyn Chen are as close to a WNBA guard tandem as UConn will ever get. Combine those two with Paige Bueckers & Ash Shade as forwards and you have a WNBA foursome. If Ice Bradey or El Alffi can run, Paige Bueckers, KK & Chen will see to it that they get double figures on a fast break. I don't want Beers because she's a talented, post-up glue-foot, not run & gun queen. "Unbridled fast break " is what KK & Bueckers want & that adds up to 95 points per game.

As a Bruin fan, I'm obviously biased, but I believe she would have been a perfect replacement for Charisma Osborne. Oh well, there are still many excellent Oregon State players available. I think UCLA now has four scholarships available. If I were Coach Cori Close, I would offer one to four different OSU players(Hansford, Paurova, Hunter and whoever else). Geno tends to alternate 4 guard and 3 guard lineups.. when he has the bench depth and talent to do it. I can see Shade and KK alternating somewhat.. Aubrey filling off the bench for a guard or forward.. changing the energy. The frontcourt is going to be a mystery that gets solved based on in-season performance.. but the backcourt guards will have a good range of size, speed and shooting that will allow Geno to put the best fit. If KK fouls out.. then Kaitlyn has the ability to fill PG leaving Paige to be a hard-to-ignore off ball threat. Having more guard tools in the toolbox is going to help UCONN quite a bit.. its been a very shallow tool box for several seasons lately. Forwards.. they did just fine with Edwards.. I imagine Sarah Strong will be trained in the same concepts/expectations. Jana is someone I am immensely curious about for the high post/5 position.. not just for her size but her passing/vision.. if she finds a way to connect with Paige with an inside out game.. that should be something fun to watch develop!

It’s simple, uconn just graduated it’s 2 most reliable bodies. Muhl and Edwards both got to play 4 full seasons. No other upperclassman on the team can say that. You have to go into next season with zero expectations for the players returning from injury. Geno needs to field a team assuming the worst. Let the gimps come off the bench while Kaitlin assumes a starter role. And get Raegan Beers to replace Edwards. Aside from Paige, KK, and Ashlynn, the entire rest of the team needs to prove that they are ready and able to play

In regards to Chen…a solid addition. UConn only has TWO PG’s, primary ball handlers on the roster, Paige & KK. Everyone else is a shooting guard or wing. Look for a 3 PG rotation between Paige, Kaitlyn and KK. This will allow Geno to conserve Paige’s minutes. The goal is to not play these kids 30+ mins per game. This is also great insurance in case of injury. You lose Muhl but you gain a Sr, 4 year starter and better scoring PG. UConn still needs a big now that Beers committed to OK. Maybe Gardiner? We’ll have to see because the health of Griffin, Ducharme, Patterson are still in question for next year.

  • @giftcardbill

Nice take. In my mind Geno and KC discussed playing time, her role, etc. I would imagine Paige was involved in these discussions. It must have been a good discussion because she signed. Her experience, leadership, and IQ are massive. I hope I don't get crucified for this but Azzi is so fragile. In HS and with UCONN she sits more than plays because of her injuries. Paige showed resilience this year but she's fragile as well. If either, or both of them go down, what does Geno have left? Shade and KK as sophomores and freshman guards. Caroline is fragile as well. Knowing how Geno coaches, he will have plays specifically to get KC her shots. I think it's a fortuitous situation for KC to come. That being said; I've never seen Beers play nor Gardner so I don't have an opinion. But...... Ice disappears at times because her head gets in the way. I love Jana's game but will she be ready to go? And of course this is essentially her freshman year as a player. Geno is high on her so that's certainly a plus. Of course there is Griffin, which is huge.

I think this will mean a competition between Chen, KK, Shade, and Azzi's health for two spots. Likely, I think this means Shade and KK move to bench. Beers picked OU. But if all are healthy and they don't pick up another C/F the starting lineup by start of season might be Chen, Paige, Fudd (limited min), Brady, Strong . Now it is possible KK beats out Chen but I could see Geno wanting to bring Griffin and KK off the bench together and blitz other teams with speed. So with Griffin as a Sub for Strong or when there is need to add size at the guard. Shade as the sub for Azzi (with them about splitting min). I think KK would be the sub for both Paige and Chen. El Alfy as the Sub for Brady. Now in this hypothetical Chen and KK could switch roles but I think Griffin and KK as a sub package together (often with Shade) would allow Uconn to play an even faster style than with Chen, Paige, and Azzi a trio who I feel are more mature in manipulating the defense in the half court (which is why I think they will be together as starters). Caroline has a long way to go. I know Geno likes her length but her heath is an issue so I won't include her until she is healthy. I think early in the season El Alfy will come off the bench. Brady started to earn Geno's trust in the Big East tourney if she builds on that she starts at the 5, unless another forward arrives, at least early in the season. I do think El Alfy after watching her games in World Cup could eventually take he 5 spot. Remember El Alfy has been practicing for a few months with limited contact. To think Geno could likely go 9 deep next season.

So, she can display her defensive skills, which you did not talk about. Coach is no fool.

(Shade shot 35.6% as a freshman for comparison, and while it was just HS Ziebell shot 44.9% from 3 last year so she can shoot.) I will never take a fat Center, that girl can't run ,it doesn't fit uconn style of game,an athletic center yes but not her,not wonder she picked up Oklahoma ,no pressure there and that coach is used to it to have fat post players.

Hhhmmm... It looks redundant now. We need bigs, not guards. You wanna see me excited for a portal move, let's talk Reagan Beers. But I can be wrong, too. Lou looked superfluous as well, and look how she turned out. I'm willing to give Geno the benefit of the doubt. Geno has forgotten more about basketball than I'll ever know, and he's closer to the team. Certainly, she'll be a valuable addition to the team, no matter what happens to the guard situation next year. She's an Ivy Leaguer, so she's smart as all get-out; she's all-Ivy and all conference tournament for three or four years, and MVP for three. Averaging 35 minutes, 16 points, 3.5 boards, and 5 dimes a game last year, against 2 TO. She shoots 48 and 32 from the field and the 3, which is not knock-your-eyes-out, but solid and respectable. Best of all, she played her full 4 years at Princeton (Geno likes that) and she isn't a team-hopper. Maybe she's insurance against Azzi and Caroline not being able to play, to take some pressure off of Paige. Certainly someone of her knowledge and experience will do nothing but good for KK on her way up. Given Ines and Amari have moved on, there's scholarship room for her, and the commitment is only for one year. All in all, a pretty good move, I'd say. She's not going to get 35 minutes a game here, barring injury, unless she's a lot better than she looked at Princeton, but maybe she's OK with that if it comes with the ability to play for a bigger team. If nothing else, playing for Uconn gets you noticed.

Losing out on minutes? More players enable players to play harder for the minutes they are on the floor - aka depth.

Chen is a real deal. KK and Shade will likely come off the bench.

From a guard's point of view, not good. For a run at the championship, good if the team can maintain a positive attitude with so many good players riding the bench.
