Ubuntu Studio: Improving the Linux experience for creatives

Ғылым және технология

Join me as I review Ubuntu Studio, a Linux distribution designed for creative people. See how it compares to other distros and if it's the right choice for your creative workflow. I'm an average user, not a creative type, but just want to see what it is and if it might work for you!

    Ubuntu Studio would deserve this name if DaVinci Resolve would run on it out of the box. At the moment, Nobara is the better Ubuntu Studio

    Yes it is unfortunate that Da Vinci Resolve chose red-hat Linux as its focused platform.

    I use UbuntuStudio since over 10 years (even Ardour even longer (since Ver. 2)) and gotta say, it has replaced my Windows Music-making since forever and i never went back to Windows. I switched to MacOS, with a MacBook and since 2007 always had a MacBook and a UbuntuStudio-Machine. I recently had to give my M1 MacBook to my wife because her MacBook died, and now I am using my UbuntuStudio PC as Main-Machine. The only thing I miss is, that I can‘t use Logic, which became my main DAW since Version 10. Also I can‘t run my MPC Software on Linux. These are the only reasons, why I will probably buy a new Mac, everything else is perfectly usable and runs very good in UbuntuStudio.

    Just an FYI: Ubuntu Studio 22.04 LTS maybe the current LTS, but we're only a couple of months away from the next LTS, thus the 22.04 release is rather *dated* in terms of what Ubuntu Studio is now or on recent releases(s). A current view of Ubuntu Studio would be Ubuntu Studio 23.10, where many of the configuration issues that existed in 22.04 are gone (JACK wasn't run by default in 22.04). The addition of Pipewire & other change make things work 'out of the box' in later releases such as Ubuntu Studio 23.10 (as you can expect with Ubuntu Studio 24.04 LTS).

    Very reasonable review. And you are candid on what you know, or not. I use Ubuntu Studio as my daily, on both a 10 yr old lap, and a powerful new workstation (128 gigs of ram, etc.). Wonderful tool-set.

    The good thing about Ubuntu Studio is it has a lot of apps included. So if you're new to Linux and don't really know what to use, installing Studio could be worthwhile just to see what's available. But it is geared more towards creators with video, audio and graphics media in mind. You can make this distro from any other, but it's nice to have it all in one. It's just the snap packages that can be a pain, but I believe you can enable flatpacks if need be. The one big thing that sets Studio apart from mainstream distros is the inclusion of a low latency kernel. It helps with audio latency (like when you're capturing audio there's barely a delay). Otherwise with latency you could be hearing delays between whats input and output audio.

    Very nice! If I was going to start producing videos and music again this is the distro I would try. Looks like they have thrown everything but the kitchen sink in there software wise. Some of the software included have some steep learning curves like Ardour but that's part of the fun. Learning something new is part of the reason I like Linux. Well done sir. Nice video.

    Tried last week, looks nice, works terrible. Snaps Firefox, starts slower than on Windows, but that's fine, but a lot of times after cold boot, Firefox for example just don't start at all after clicking, one time, 2nd time, sometimes 3rd time... what the $%&* is that. I am back on Fedora on Plasma.

    @@johnishappy Totally understand. I mostly do video/photo editing though so a lot of the pre installed software was outside what I'd normally use. Still an interesting distro which is why I figured I'd give it a try.

  • @Maxume
    @Maxume5 ай бұрын

    I'm very happy you reviewed this distro as I haven't seen much coverage of it. I get what they're trying to do with it but I think the amount of pre-installed software that no singular person will ever use, makes the distro way too bloated to be efficient as an actual workstation. As an exhibition distro to show content creators what's available on Linux, it would be perfect though.

    A huge problem I've had with Ubuntu Studio is that on the last couple of occasions they haven't supported LTS upgrades:- i.e. from 20.04 to 22.04 and from 22.04 to 24.04. They seem to assume or at least expect people will always upgrade to the .10 version before the next LTS. And they seem to blame this on changes in the Windows Environment, and I know those have been difficult but I use Xfce instead of Gnome/Unity/Whatever anyway. And (even in the year 2024) there's no error messages: it'll just refuse to connect to the upgrade server and let me eventually find out the upgrade I'm trying to do isn't supported in the old release notes. I can't upgrade via 21.01 any longer: so it's not a true 5-year LTS cycle, unless you're committing to logging into the PC at intervals to keep it updated. 24.04 will have even more Snap cancer anyway so I'm about done with Ubuntu and/or Ubuntu Studio after this.

  • @linuxforpunks

    @linuxforpunks

    2 ай бұрын

    @@basilcat3111 I was tempted by OpenSUSE because I like chameleons, and it might help my kids find the computers more approachable. What I've ended up doing is replacing my win7 "daily driver" machine with Arch. So far I think Arch has been a good choice for this type of switch because on this pc it matters to me that I can recreate certain silly 'muscle-memory' UI interactions I've grown used to on win7 (without inheriting other people's ones). Also I've been able (sometimes) to copy+paste my config settings from linux-y software I was running in windows into an actual linux and then make it work. OpenSUSE can do all this too, but I liked being in a headspace where some of these things didn't work out of the box and I had to remember about them and be conscious of "do I need this?"

    Krita is a solid bit of professional quality software, available everywehre though so I'm still confused as to the reason for Ubuntu Studio. I guess it's a neat showcase for Linux software other than the usual office suites/text editors you get bundled in with a distro.
