"What was my password?" I felt my body react just hearing that dire question. 😄
6:52 - is a PERFECT example of why scroll bars should NOT disappear! You had to hunt to grab the bar. And if you don't move the mouse in that area you don't know if there are more options. VERY annoying!
Thanks for reminding us that not everybody in the world needs a machine with a AMD 5950X CPU, NVIDIA 3090, 128GB of RAM.

@@Chris.Brisson perhaps they will not. The distro's software fillment is amazing, but I'm afraid 99% of this is total junk (including the OS itself). It is suitable for some simple tasks, but I doubt anyone built his/her workflow completely relying on this OS and software. It goes with no warranty and no support, and some day or other one will face a problem that will require too much time to solve, which is unacceptable in serious projects with tight time frame. Unlike paid software, which often built/modified/fixed at customer's request and in definite time frame, the FOSS is often built on enthusiasm and for developer's needs. If you don't like it - don't use it, that's what they usually say when you try to improve their software. This is unacceptable IMO

NEEDS MORE COWBELL! Great video as always, could've used this package 10 years ago when I wanted to play guitar covers and make videos of those covers on youtube.
It’s always fun to see Chris getting excited over computers and software.
I also wobble like a wobbly window after having a dose of Explaining Computers
Excellent video. I use Kdenlive on my Windows machines sometimes. Blender is unparalleled. Inkscape is used for creating so many web banners and icons. It's nearly usable as a replacement for Adobe Illustrator. GIMP, in my opinion, is better than Photoshop in some aspects. Though I'd go for Cinellera GG Infinity, Kedenlive also comes with useful pro functions. You have covered almost every aspect of Linux Multimedia (which is almost unheard of) that nobody could explain better, that too, in a short time. Serious, and dedicated effort. Kudos to you for that!
You've just help me decide what OS to put on my soon-surplus i7 machine! Excellent.

I love this channel. Thanks for always showing off how to use lesser known Linux tools to produce media with.
Lovely series of videos on this old pc upgrade. Pinnacle tech videos are cool, sure. But this realistic approach you have stands out nowadays.
Thank you! Haven't seen a good demo of Ubuntu Studio before. Looks like a great distro package.
Loved the behind the scenes footage! Hurrah!
Excellent distro! I've filed that one away in my mental rolodex. Thanks for another excellent video Chris!
I am impressed, this looks like a beautifully integrated distribution with an eye towards being both user friendly and truly productive. So many distros just rehash the desktop again and again, without any real benefit for normal end-users. Thanks for showing us this gem!
Thank you very much. It's always a joy watching your videos, Mr Barnatt.
I got confused at one point as I felt like I had watched the video before you had uploaded it :-). Great video as usual
Stellar content! Thank you for the review. I will definately recommend both the distro and this video to my creative friends.
Thank you for another enlightening video! I love your wit and style.
I’m impressed! WOW. Enough said. Looking forward to your next video.
"What was my password? I HOPE it was this one..." We've all been there Christopher, we've all forgotten a password on our brand new OS in the time it takes the PC to do its first reboot! One of your most informative videos yet, Sir. Great subject matter, presented with your usual skill and enthusiasm.
I just can't wait till Sundays for the upload. You make my week!

Absolute class video. Christopher makes Sundays better. This one was weirdly meta. Also, Apple need to consider replacing the Genie effect with Wobbly Windows. In fact, all OSes need it.
I like the minimalism of this setup!
Nice to see we don't need a top range PC to do intensive stuff.
Wow. This distro is awesome. I need to try it on VM.
Ubuntu studio is a great distro for discovering what is available in Linux software. You could spend hours searching the internet and installing all sorts of things but the makers of this distro have picked just about the best of everything. |I am not an Ubuntu user but I think everyone should give this distro a try.

I'm always glad when a new EC video drops, but I'm also always a bit depressed when Professor Barnatt says, "That's it for another video...". I'm thinking that's where the thumbs-down are coming from. They are from people who are depressed that the video is over and deal with it in a spiteful way.

Very interesting distro, a collection of very capable software, it's all free and the results are incomparable to those done on systems in the thousands of £$€'s together with software that is loaned, AND NOT OWNED, in these modern times. Another great vid.
I have to admit that I am impressed at how well that Pentium Gold G6400 CPU handles UB Studio and the necessary applications to create a 1080p video. I did not expect it to be so smooth. Thanks!
I think you proved the point in this video that it's not about the tools or the topic. It's all bout the creator behind the content.
Another excellent video! I have been out of Computers for a couple of years and a few months ago my Laptop gave out. I decided to go and get a new PC Desktop instead. I was shocked to find that this Pentium Gold is a Duo Core Four Thread running at 4 GHz! I bought a new HP Desktop, Pentium Gold, 8 GB RAM, 250 SSD for $349 on sale. All I do is surf the web, streaming, and word processing, and this machine is amazing. My Lubuntu and Zorin OS’s are on my older machines, this new version of Ubuntu does look amazing...if one will use that software.

A pc suitable for light and everyday needs (internet, email, browsing etc) is not expensive nowadays. SSD has become the most important compontent in the machine due to the extremely wide spectrum of user requirements. 8GB is about the minimum needed to give windows 10 a fluid experience, provided the SSD is of sufficient speed (sata-600 with at least 80% saturation, but preferably a nvme SSD directly on the PCIe bus - The SSD in my machine reaches 3.2 Gbytes/sec). The difference in speed between the slowest and fastest CPU has become very large indeed. If you're impressed with a Pentium Gold, you should see the benchmarks of an AMD EPYC with 128 cores and hyperthreading! Remember the Core I7 Gen1 from 2009? That CPU is still faster than the Pentium Gold, that's how wide the speed spectrum is of available CPUs nowadays. Only the newer CPUs are much more power efficient. And it will not be much longer before the line between RAM and storage starts to fade, there are already memory modules that are both RAM and Storage available for servers. See it as the merging of the short term and long term memory.
Very powerful tools considering the resources available!
Very nice. Put a CAD program or two on that, maybe a slicer, and you have a PC geared to create almost anything...all with free software. What a time to be alive.
Thanks for continuing to give us great content Chris.

just let the video run and set the auto play to off. Then move the progress bar back and let it play. Most of the time it works and you won't have to wait and watch the archive.
I didn't think of using inkscape for text, that's very clever!
Thanks for this video! I was doing pretty much the same as you with an old Compaq. I got lucky enough to go the budget AMD route, the CPU being used. Anyways, thank you for the idea of Ubuntu Studio. I usually use Mint, but I want something new to play with!
As an Ubuntu Studio user, thank you for making this video.
I always love me some Explaining Computers inception. :)
10:34 This needs more Cowbell.
Excellent video Chris, really shows that you don't need expensive hardware or proprietary software to be creative. P.s. Try the desktop cube, that has to be one of my favourite features of Plasma.
So I see "Ubuntu Studio" and I'm thinking... oh no, Ubuntu means Gnome, which I _loathe_ ... but then I see KDE DESKTOP and now _I'm so happy!_ Must fetch and play with this. The Gold PC makes a nice benchmark for how it'll run on other semi-modern hardware, too.
Love having a good sound mixer on a computer.
Great video. I should check out this distro again, haven't looked at it in years. Mypaint is great for drawing too!
Dear Chris, Thank you. 🙂 👍👍👍👍👍
That was the most hilariously recursive review I think I've seen. M.C. Escher would have loved it. A great idea to tailor packages for audiences that may not be technical (or have spare time) to search for compatible software to meet their needs. Nice to see that for this version, at least, Ubuntu's dropped the usual dreary Victorian maroon colour scheme for the desktop.
I use a lot of these apps myself, but never used Ubuntu Studio. Thanks for showing us Hydrogen. Had to get that real quick.
Didn't know this distro, but it is really good. The lesson today is: We can do a lot of creative work on budget hardware running open source software. No need for expensive things to get started. Thanks a lot, Chris.
That is awesome for CCTV forensic experts can use a bootable distro for analysis!
There's just something so special about an early 2000 PC case. That's why I still kept my old Pentium 4 2001 HP case for when I completely redo it may have to modify it a bit but I'll do it but it's missing a plastic piece on top I'll have to find.
Yes! I have been using Ubuntu Studio for years to produce content for my channel. I favor Openshot for video editing because it's very streamlined and allows a quick workflow.

Wonderful! No need to buy a high end PC for all this editing. Shows you how much bloatware and unnecessary code is included with retail O/S. And hardware vendors equally add their baggage, all for a price! Thank you for showing the lighter pathway to computing!
Ubuntu Studio looks pretty cool as a creative Linux distro. The UI looks more modern and the software suite helps to reflect the experience. The GUI is entirely different than Fedora and the layout has a quality appearance that I rarely saw when working with a few Linux distros. I will definitely give this distro a try when I get a chance to test it in a VM.

Bonjour Chris, thanks for another great video. I upgraded my brother and law's ten year old dell after watching you last video.
