    POP OS is Gnome just a customised version of it. The one disadvantage is that it does not have any other desktops only Gnome. When I tried Pop I found the Pop Shop software Center very slow and sometimes it did not load anything. The Linux Mint Software Center is the best one I think but it cannot be installed on anything but Mint. I also use Nemo as my default file manager with the Ubuntu Gnome Desktop on Linux Mint. It has better features than Nautilus. Nemo can also be used on other desktops not just Cinnamon. Peppermint OS include Nemo in their XFCE Desktop and another distro includes it in their KDE Desktop. Nemo can also be set as the default file manager.

    The Pop Shop is slow and slightly twitchy. Someone mentioned I should change the suppository (repository).

    Pop Os is my main OS. I love it. The Pop Shop is slow, one of the few complaints I have, but really not a big deal. Great video.

    Pop OS spent more time on my test bed system than any other random distribution. Happens that WUbuntu is currently still running thereon and so is StarCraft, much to my glee. Wubuntu may yet be the new "longest runner" thereon. and the developers deserve a lot of praise! But my daily driver is still Mint / Cinnamon and I don't see that changing any time soon.

    It's a relatively newer distribution, but they're making some good improvements that really make it different from others and aiming for a certain group of people.

    Really looking forward to the new version when it comes out later in the year. Completely rebuilt Desktop not reliant on the Gnome toolkit. Will probably wait a couple of updates until it's more stable.

    It's pretty nice. Updates are done there too. I have had historic problems with some updates that are for Console UI which ask the user a Y/N question. In this case because the Pop Shop is graphical, it doesn't translate these Console input/questions into a GUI context. Which means your updates freeze when the question comes up. Rebooting and restarting seems the best approach, but this can break your install which means you need to pull out the USB installer and nuke your OS partition. But to be fair it seems recently (1 year or more) these issues don't happen anymore. So it appears theses sorts of issues are resolved for the time being.

    I've used Pop_OS! and liked it. I like having a software center like the Pop shop too. I have heard you can view screenshots in Synaptic, so there's that.

  • @AndreaBorman

    @AndreaBorman

    Yes you can. If you click on get screenshot Synaptic will show you the preview screenshot of what it looks like. But it does not do that with every software just some of them. I think it fetches the image from the software vendors website maybe that's why. But I do find Synaptic is the best tool for finding and installing software. When I look in Gnome Software Center I find it does not include everything. The Linux Mint Software Manager is better for that and for showing previews.

    Pop shop can be slow or unresponsive sometimes but otherwise I'm very happy with Pop OS. The fact that they make Nvidia drivers easy to install was the original reason I tried it out and while sometimes running on an older kernel can be an issue (especially with newer hardware) in general it hasn't been a major issue for me. Looking forward to the redone desktop which should be out later this year!

    nice vid Ive always had a soft spot for pop, but I must admit the latest version seems to be a bit less snappy than it used to be. Hey in regards to the popshop being laggy , you may need to change the sources repo to a closer or faster one. Also I miss the rounded window corners they used to have.

    PopOS was one I've been planning on giving a whirl. The only concerning thing is the old kernel they tend to use as I'm generally on newer hardware. Personally not much of a fan of Gnome and haven't found a distro I liked using. But I think Gnome is geared more towards Mac users and KDE towards Windows. MS these days (for whatever reason) are not fully testing their updates and introducing more bugs. The issues they can't (don't want to) fix, they just remove the feature and call it "Quality improvements Updates" LOL. But Linux isn't immune to it either - especially if you're on a rolling release (I've just has one with the latest update on Ultramarine KDE adding in features I can't turn off or revert back). BTW John, letting people know about memory usage is a good indicator when you're comparing different distros on their resource usage and whether it might work on some lower powered systems (like single core CPUs, limited memory like 2-4GB). And especially amongst different desktops (like Gnome vs KDE vs XFCE etc). Might as well include it if you're going to be doing reviews of various distros 👍. If you're using a modern machines like I tend to do you could use whatever you like. Either way Linux is generally lighter on resources than Windows.

    This is my daily driver. Works great for most games and on nvidia hardware. Still on GTX 1070 Ti (i.e. not RTX/2000 series) and with a GSYNC only monitor. So not sure when Xorg will be dropped and Wayland forced upon me, breaking my use of the 1000 level nvidia card + my GSYNC monitor. My understanding is Wayland doesn't like 1000 series nvidia. Not sure what it means for me.
