US tarrifs on Chinese cars will result in two things. Retaliation by China imposing restrictions on US companies involvement in China, which is entirely fair. The second consequence will be that US car buyers will not be able to get the benefit of the competition that drives up standards for the production of new energy vehicles. It's a loose, loose move that will see US car buyers having to put up with second rate domestic products and it won't stop Chinese brands selling in the largest car market in the world and in most other countries. The US should have learned from what China did with Tesla, allowing them to operate locally forcing their domestic producers to compete. Sadly the US seems hell bent on becoming a second rate manuafcturing country.

The US is creating a Trabant-like market, where consumers end up paying more for increasingly uncompetitive vehicles. The eventual result, like with the Trabant, will be a globally irrelevant US auto industry. It will be a slow and painful path for US consumers to get to the eventual demise. But it will happen faster now, as the technology is moving faster and the US makes up an increasingly small portion of the global car market. If we had a focus on collaboration (e.g., letting Ford and CATL open a battery JV), would could be able to stay in the game long-term.

Yes, and it is supported by strong oil company lobby. Even on social media, you have entire channels supported by commenters saying that EVs will be a disaster in cold weather, are impossible to repair, and are worse for the environment. ICE is only 30% efficient. Two thirds of your tank is going up in heat and engine wear, and the engine itself has many, many more non repairable parts. By 2030, EVs with 800km of range and batteries guaranteed for 250-500k km will be the norm. CATL is already there.

Having better, lower cost computers enables far more jobs using them than manufacturing them and massively increases productivity. Having a TV that costs a few hours wages compared to over a months wages when we still made them here increases the standard of living of everyone who buys a TV, while supporting far more people who provide content for that TV. Right now, we pay roughly five times as much per watt as the unsubsidized price in China for solar panels ($0.11). Because most of the jobs associated with solar are in installation/implementation and the majority of the economic benefit is in use, by multiplying the cost of that critical component, we cost net jobs and reduce economic output, while reducing standard of living by increasing the cost of energy. Not to mention that we spend twice as much on panel subsidies as those panels cost outright. As we acutally have a skilled workforce shortage in many sectors, we could be using that wasted money to upskill people for jobs that drive the economy forward. BTW, all the pro-oil politicians support tariffs on China but not on OPEC for a reason.

when they only way u.s. can compete is to impose 100% tariff, that shows how bad u.s. dropped the ball on EV adoption. it's essentially the same as admitting failure.

It shows how much we failed at developing a STEM workforce. BYD alone has 102,000+ engineers and scientists in R&D, more than any other automaker and significantly more than all US-based automakers combined. China graduates more engineers in roughly 2 years than the US has in total. The STEM talent gap (amplified by short-sighted immigration policies) means that all the nationalist subsidies and tariffs will not catch the US up. It will only keep competitive vehicles out, increase the federal deficit and inflate prices.

There was a 10% purchase tax exemption on vehicles up to $41k, meaning a max subsidy of $4100 and just $1000 on a low-cost car like a Seagull. There is a new scrappage plan focused on low-income buyers with a max rebate of $1400. All much less than the $7500 US Clean Vehicle Tax Credit. Less than the $45/kWh Battery Production Tax credit on something like a Cybetruck.Not to mention all the other subsidies in the IRA, largely through the tax code, that have left Tesla never paying US corporate income tax and claiming $5 Billion in tax benefits in their net profits last year. And Tesla also got $1.8 Billion in regulatory credits last year. Overall, the EV subsidies in the infrastructure bill and IRA are significantly more than the cumulative support to date in China and spread over a fraction as many vehicles, meaning multiple times the subsidies per vehicle.

That tariff is basically saying we could've had cars for about half the price; the government's keeping car prices sky high.

When you can't compete, just get the government to tax it.

Joe Manchin's interference turned it into a "local jobs and manufacturing" push - to appease Toyota in WV. The Prius might have started the EV segment, but it did it no favors. Hybridization is a huge performance advantage! I say forget turbos and hybridize all the engines. Adding electric motors is the best thing you can do to complement an ICE powertrain.

Tesla will probably continue to put downward pressure on prices as they seek to reach the $25k price point with their next gen platform, so not all is lost. But yes this is not a productive approach versus actually promoting the local production of compelling EVs as much as a priority as the Chinese do for progress/modernization interests. It's not China's fault that the Detroit legacies are scaling back their EV plans, that kinda short-termism is totally on the golden parachutes who make such decisions within those companies.

@@trentdebaere7581 Any productive stuff that helps us catch up on EVs, yes. Blunt tariffs merely signals retreat, an admission of un-competitiveness. It wont stop China from dominating abroad as they begin to offer cheaper and/or superior EV products, might even be positive PR for them. There are smarter ways to either make our local players evolve into a competitive EV position, promote new players to take their place, or "localize" foreign players. Any of those are smarter approaches that could preserve/grow/modernize the jobs and industry of the future within our nation.

The news has given Tesla a very slight bump but the Chinese will get around the tariffs by building assembly factories in the US. There is no 25K car, it was due to be released this year so where were the prototypes the pre-release previews?

I agree but..... Japan isn't killing it's citizens. Seem to work with U.S.A. . Provided us with quality programs instead of stealing manufacturing and high-technology. Honda and Toyota were the only quality cars in the late 70's and 80's.

The Chinese put that much tariff and more against US cars to prevent fair competition. This tariff makes trade more fair and is justified.

Dude, Tesla was already committed (i.e. had already started digging) to that 500 million dollar number this year. It is next year and beyond that they will back off on new sites and will spend money instead on expanding existing ones. Most of the 500 member team that was laid off was in planning and procurement of new sites. Ergo they will not be needed so much once the new sites already underway are finished. Deals will be cut with other EV charging providers to take over the locations Tesla is dropping plans to build on. Reason: New sites are getting more and more expensive as utilities are dragging their feet to lay the power lines needed. Also govt. money for installing chargers seems to be based on how many chargers NOT how many sites. Therefore expanding existing sites means more govt money faster....good business decision. Finally, BP and other providers have expressed interest in developing more sites AND buying Tesla chargers from Tesla. This is a win-win as Tesla doesn't have to pay for the site but makes money on the equipment sale.

Well we will have to see what Tesla prices due with Optimus and vision based AI, which is why Giga Mexico probably won't happen since the low wage workforce won't be needed. Some Chinese auto factories already use a bare minimum of human workers (pretty much just load the materials for the factory robots to use then a few final inspections that AI can't do, for now), one reason for cheap prices. I'm still willing to bet in time lobbyists have it so the EV rebates will only be applied to UAW made cars.

Buick Envision is 100% Made In China. GM will suffer most from this tariff. Excellent!💙

The tariff is effectively a ban. I dont get the math and the reasoning. Its 25% now even when there are no Chinese EVs for sale. Adding the $7500 tax credit gives a generous $12-15K buffer for legacy to compete and they still cant make these cars? The case for blaming labor for this is getting thin. Heads need to roll.

The mystery for the last year or so, has been why do Chinese cars cost so much more outside China. Here's a hypothesis: They're expecting this tariff. So they start with an inflated price. Then when the tariff is imposed, they drop the price accordingly, so no effect on sales.

It is obvious they do not need r and d team... listen to Munro, he explains why. They are expanding and have ford and many other customers for the growing network.. also they are being smashed often, so repairmen are highly needed asap for installs and repairs.

The point of the WTO is to protect the interests of mainly US investors, by selectively enforcing adherence to the tenets of the "greed is good" religion. The economic theory based on this religion, is used as window dressing. But when the interests of investors are at stake, the "theory" becomes very flexible. Even disposable.

Raising tariffs on Chinese imports is really dumb. 1) Chinese made EVs are fantastic quality and will be at a cost Americans can afford. This will speed up adoption of EVs and reduce CO2.... which supposedly is a major goal of the Biden Administration. This kills that because American OEMs are not going to make a lot of EVs as they don't seem to be able to make them cheaply enough to make a profit on them. 2) The Chinese govt is likely to slap restrictions on exporting car parts to US OEMs. Cadillac is made exclusively in China and exported to the US... that may completely stop. US OEM EVs get way more than half their parts from China.... some come through middlemen in South korea but originate in China. If China retaliates you can kiss goodbye any hope in the world of US OEMs EVER making a competitive EV. This means that they will lose the entire Chinese and EU markets which are quickly changing over to EV. When Tesla brings out robo-taxis OEM marketshare in their only remaining market (the US) will collapse as people in cities give up car ownership all together. This move will actually be looked back at as the beginning of the collapse of US OEMs.

All models sold in USA are made in USA.

China has too many brands (ICE, PHEVs and BEVs) and too much capacity. A normally functioning market would see some fail. In China, some are State owned, while others are too important for China to let them fail.

A normally functioning market sees government interventions all day every day. If you want to know what's going on, you pretty much have to throw away the front page, and all the headlines and editorials and advertising, and just read the inside pages of the thickest and heaviest newspapers. Especially the last half of the articles.

I think more Chinese companies will be buying defunct brands and selling rebadged products stateside. Volvo/Polestar is prime example with their new EX30 and future products.
