A lot of things were problematic at the Karolyi Ranch it sounds like. I think one of the biggest things is how secluded it was and how little access there was for anyone outside of coaches and athletes. There were a lot of unknowns if you weren’t among them. The most alarming thing was of course the sexual abuse but for me the next most alarming was how far away the athletes were from outside medical care. Hidden with no communication. What is going on now seems like a welcome change. I hope it continues.

The Karolyis created a situation that made those young gymnasts extremely vulnerable. You couldn't have set up a worst situation than they did really. First was their obsession with youth and their ironclad belief that adult women were unsuitable for elite gymnastics. Once you were 21, you were an old woman, a "grandma" they would say. And everyone went right along with that nonsense. They wanted them young so they could boss them around, tell them what to do and get no pushback because they were children, not adult women. Second was their insistence on underweight gymnasts. They starved these girls and it was obvious. Look back at those poor young women, girls in reality, and look how _hungry_ they looked. They were literally starving them at their camp, which of course gave a groomer like Larry Nasser opportunity to give the girls "secret" food. One gymnast said he would secretly give them pieces of _bread_ behind the scenes. This is grooming 101 and it was completely the Karolyis fault for starving these poor kids. Third, the karolyis didn't allow complaints. You had to take whatever it is they dished out, which again set the stage for an abuser like Nasser to harm the gymnasts, knowing they would be too afraid to tell. They were all afraid of the karolyis because they knew the karolyis held their fate in their hands. You couldn't have set up a worse situation that was ripe for abuse than the karolyi camp. Amd worse, because America dominates in gymnastics, what we did, the world followed. This meant that young gymnasts from every country were getting this same awful treatment, and thr blame sets squarely on the shoulders of the karolyis. What they did to those girls and young women and what they did to the sport of gymnastics is despicable. And the gymnastics community went right along with every bit of it! Shame on everyone who stayed quiet and let this happen! How did our country allow these people to come here and do this? It is awesome that things have changed and gymnasts can _sit down_ to rest and they don't have to be starved, scared and then retired as grandma's by 21. It's just wonderful, but the larolyis and everyone who enabled them were never held to account for what they did to generations of girls/women athletes. Why did we let them abuse our girls like this? Why?

There should be a balance between the athletes listening to what the rules of the training camp are and what the athletes have proven they can do. You want some seriousness but also don’t want it so strict that the athletes are miserable and become discouraged and burn out.
