This video is #4 of a series of videos on my experience at flight school. The intent of this series is to create foresight and encouragement for those who want to attend US Army flight school and become a Army Aviator.
In this video I will cover ground school and P1 of common core.

    Thank you, I really appreciate the support. It depends on what you want to fly and what mission set you wish to support. If you want to fly helicopters, the Army is the best route. You can be an Attack Helicopter pilot, move personnel and cargo, or the best mission MEDEVAC (I’m a little biased because this is my mission). If you want to fly jets and fixed wing, Air Force is probably your best route. I am obviously better versed on Army aviation because that’s my branch. The Navy and Coast Guard have great options too. If you are interested in going Army Aviation, I think the best route to go for you would be the “street to seat option” and become a warrant officer. I think your background would definitely help you get selected, and it would no doubt be a huge advantage in flight school. You should talk to a recruiter and ask more about it. Good luck, and feel free to reach out anytime.

  • @scud-runner

    @scud-runner

    Жыл бұрын

    I’m not the best to ask about street to seat because I took a different route but I do know a little bit about it. The main thing you want to do is find a recruiter that knows how to get you a street to seat contract. If they start trying to discuss another job or they say that it’s not available then just go find a different recruiter. Taking the ASVAB and SIFT test and doing well should give you the best chances at locking down the contract. You can find more info at this link www.goarmy.com/careers-and-jobs/specialty-careers/aviation.html . Good luck and reach other for anything else.

    Great video, One question. I plan on going to ROTC in college and Majoring in Aeronautical Science. Do you think the Guard will be better to secure a pilot slot/apply to be a pilot? I have a Active Duty Aviation Officer who will help guide me through ROTC and all the other stuff. I seen on websites like BOGI Dope to go guard and apply since AD is extremely competitive.

  • @scud-runner

    @scud-runner

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you. Going Guard isn’t a bad option, but it depends on your unit. I am most familiar with the active duty side because I am active duty. I am assuming you are going Army? If so, and flying is the most important thing about your career, I recommend going warrant. If you are set on being a commissioned officer, I would try my hardest for active duty Aviation. I would put Medical Service as my number two because this gives you a second shot at being a pilot. Guard defiantly gives you more control on getting Aviation, but the downside is that you aren’t a full-time pilot, and you have to balance an outside job with your duties in the Guard. Contrary to being active duty, where you have a full-time job and can focus on flying more. You could get a job flying in civilian aviation, but most civilian aviation companies want you to have at least 1000 hours, and you leave flight school with around 130 hrs. So the military is the best way to gain the hours for a career in civilain aviation. Guard and active duty have the same minimums, but active duty pilots have more opportunities to get over the minimum hours. This maybe true for Guard units as well but I think more so for active duty. For example, bi-annual minimums are 48 hrs, and platoon leaders at my unit easily exceed that because of exercises, MEDEVAC coverage, and all the other missions we do. Now, this is also unit dependent, and we are currently short on pilots, so we really enjoy all the extra flight time. Whether you go Guard or active duty, they both have pros and cons. I recommend studying hard and going for active duty Aviation as your number one and Medical Service as your number two. If you work hard, you will get it. Good luck, and reach out anytime.

    @@scud-runner Thanks for the reply, is it competitive to go 67J? Lets say I branch med and apply. What would make me stand out?

  • @scud-runner

    @scud-runner

    Жыл бұрын

    It’s competitive to go Aviation or Medical Service. When I was going through, if you didn’t have at least a 3.3 GPA, 300 pt score, with an E at LDAC (now CST), then you probably weren’t getting it. This was because we were in a drawdown. From what I understand, it’s a little easier now-still challenging but easier. Getting selected for 67J was not too hard as long as you meet all the requirements. I’ve heard of it being harder in the past but from my experience, if you pass the SIFT, pass your class 1 flight physical, had a solid GPA, and good letters of recommendation, you were in. What makes you stand out? Majoring in Aeronautical Science will make you stand out but make sure you keep your GPA high. Good PT test score is impressive. And I’d suggest getting solid letters of recommendation, someone who is an Army pilot, preferably LTC or higher or CW3 or higher. These are things I can think of but don’t overthink it. Work hard, and you will be fine.

    Success in choosing your preferred aircraft depends on your performance in the Common Core. If you rank among the top 5 out of 20 in your class, you'll have a strong likelihood of selecting your desired aircraft. However, if you're ranked 20th, your options will be limited to what's available.

    Yeah that’s true to an extent. However, not all of them are a paragraph long maybe like two or three per day the rest of them will be like a sentence or two. The best way to do it is get ahead on daily questions like a week ahead then study 30 mins the night before and 30 mins in the parking lot. I was never super nervous about daily questions I was more nervous about table talk with my IP because you actually have predictability with daily questions.
