Types of Art Critics.

Today I bring you the different types of art critics. Those who tell you that you are a bad artist, those that have no taste, those who dont like your art, and many more. I always get asked "how can I be an artist" and "how do you deal with art critics?" and my answer is to draw and create art. No matter who you are or what you do there will always be people who dont like your art or your work, but that doesn't mean theres something wrong with you, the problem lies with them. You can only improve your work by drawing, creating, and doing your very best. And always take constructive criticism because it WILL help you. Unfortunately, not everyone is necessarily constructive..hence why they are in this video haha

Actually that "you should finish your drawing" is a very decent advice, no? You can never improved if you too afraid or too lazy to finish your artwork. At least that is what I believe as an amateur artist.

Actually, both of those are fantastic for advice. Finishing your drawings will help you fail more often. You learn best through your failures. Not every drawing needs or should be stunning. As someone who has gone through many animation courses, believe it or not, but they got TICKED if you drew anime. You had two chances to turn in a portfolio and a sketchbook. They wanted the entire sketchbook to be filled with figure drawings. Once you made it into the program, you were able to stylize your drawings, but no anime. That being said. If you don't want to be an animator, a comic drawer (not manga), a painter etc, then by all means draw anime. Just know that you've restricted your audience and buyers if you refuse to expand out of your own boundaries.

Moral of the story, the ONLY criticism welcome is constructive! If you're going to critique someone it should offer helpful advice to help the person improve and should _not_ belittle the artist. CEMENT THIS IN YOUR MIND the next time you go to give a "critique"

if someone doesnt like ur art, why cant he/she just say it? expect constructive feedback from professionals, thats okay, but not from regular people who just consume art without understanding how it works, why shouldnt they be able to say it the way they feel? u people should stop being so offended about everything, a good art is not something everyone IS OBLIGED to like.

@@fungimancer9905 Yeah but it is really shitty to have someone saying "Your art sucks" to your face though. Like you work super hard on something, then someone with NO EXPERIENCE barges in and says: "Meh it sucks" Like sure, no need to give professional advice, but just say what do you see that could improve. You don't need to be a professional to be able to tell a wrong proportion from a right one.

  • @fungimancer9905

@@vicg.6344 now there are 2 options about that: first one, maybe your art is indeed not so good as you think, if u spent like, 20 hours doing some picture, it will be precious to you, but it doesnt mean that it is really good art. On the other hand - why should you care so much, what "someone with no experience" says?) If you are sure of what you create, there is no way some one can stop you from doing it. Or, perhaps, most of "artists" do stuff with only intention to get some attention to their "original" personality? And that is really bad for your artwork. In order to create something that everyone will like people make step aside from originality. Look at Van Gogh. I dont really like his work much, but he is a great example of an artist, who had an idea and didn't give it up until death, though, as a talented artist himself, he could go for more mainstream and be a rich man, live a long happy life. But in other hand, he would become "one of". Having your position is of great importance, and thinking that every uneducated asshole (even if there is plenty of them) should change your image of art - is not very healthy for your creativity.

@@fungimancer9905 Yes I say you're right! I do think however that if you see bad art, and you see the artist truly wants to improve, I'd say that trying to give some advice, would be better than just plain out saying "Your art sucks". Again, no need to be professional advice, actually you don't even need to say how to improve, just pointing out where the mistake is should be good enough. But I might just be being hyper-sensitive... like some people have low self-esteem and really need a big chunk of encouragement. Well anyways, I say this is more of a matter of perspective? And should go from case to case? Anyway, as long as respect is the key thing... then things should be fine

LMAO. Those comments may be annoying in the moment, but I suppose you have to be grateful for the content. I love how you flipped it and turned it into comedy gold. I appreciate a good female comedian that doesn’t make it all about being a woman and... basically vulgar stories. You’re definitely niche comedy, but it’s awesome and I imagine it’s a huge part of what’s made you as successful as you are. You’re genuinely funny. The great art doesn’t hurt one bit, either! I wonder what portion of your audience would actually consider themselves artists (or aspiring artists). The comedy and cool imagery you create surely draws in all kinds. Thanks for being you, and sharing your work with everyone. I can only hope to be as successful as you one day! If you _are_ looking for resources, you may already know of it - but there’s a really helpful channel that does something called *Friday Evening Figure Drawing* , and I love practicing my gesture drawing once a week while they stream. They get all kinds of models and they always wear fitted white underclothes (sort of extremely basic bathing suits, I don’t know if there’s a proper name for the wardrobe). They keep all their streams up for later reference, too! Hope that’s helpful.

I once met an art "teacher" who claimed no one knew how to use a certain art tool because, wait for it, HE didn't know how to use it, so he didn't allow others to use it in his class. He immediately hated me when I rolled my eyes at him and informed him that just because HE couldn't figure it out it didn't mean the rest of us couldn't. This was in college. The man was a LAWYER by trade, and had never had any sort of art training or really picked up a pencil or brush prior to being given this class to teach. I was taught the basics by a professional artist who had been drawing/painting for most of his life, and he really helped me and fueled my love of art. He was a firm believer that there is no right or wrong way to do art, but you needed to learn the basics first. Basically, make sure you can at least float before diving headfirst into the pool. This lawyer turned art teacher really ticked me off with his belief that there was only one way of doing art, and that was his way.

Don't care how late I am, I had this teacher who gave my piece an A- instead of an A (we have a weird system in our school) and she said "dont worry it was really good it's the best you can do as a year 9" but my friend got an A, and she said the same thing I asked "wait so why did hers get passed around the school and so much more credit than mine, like, can you tell me how to improve?" and she just said nono yours is perfect *excuse me*

OH MY GOSH! THE OLD LADY! RELATABLE. My mother in law is like 69, old hag cannot wait till she croaks. she lives with us, still very active, workwise, when I first got married to her son, she had bashed me so much, telling me art is worthless, lazy, entitled, waste of money, get a real job. I stopped creating art for 3years. yep. 3 kcufing years. finally found the Lord! and since then, ive been doing art non stop. shown in galleries, I actually submitted to a judged fiber art show in Paducah, KY that'll be the first time i submit art that actually has to be shipped to another state. scared, praying I win best of show. lol. hey if you aint striving to be the best, whats the point, imo. lol. plus I love being a gallery artist. I just love the feel. my mil was also unexcited about me getting a live painting gig at a cafe last week too,, and she hate hate hates that I actually make money from art. also have a show next month. lol she hates that I'm doing my passion again. but I totally get that critic.

This was all great, I have seen comments like this before. I think people should stop and think before commenting on something. Since you asked, I think "Patronizing critic" is also a type. Once I saw a similar "criticism" in a comment section: "You are quite talented, but I am an aclaimed artist with studies in several prestigious art schools and you are still just a little girl but you could one day be as great as me... (and so on)" It was much more detailed and obnoxious, but I can't remember the whole thing, it was ridiculous.

Something that I learned in a feedback group. Is that in order to learn art overall as an artist you also have to learn the art of critic, as it forces you to analyze others work with a critical eye and helps you to develop that critical eye for your own work. All good stuff, part of this learning process for me was learning that we are going to stumble hard learning that skill. That is also needs polishing too, as I am still learning and in my infancy on the topic of feedback and critic. I joined this group expecting that the critic exchange would be rather mature and that people would be accountable to their feelings but that is not the case always. I had left some feedback on a piece of another artists and didn't receive a comment back until a year later when I had forgotten about it. Part of my learning process in the way of feedback was disrupted as I wasn't sure if what I had provided was of use, or if I came off appropriately, or if I did well or not with my feedback. The comment talked about and I kid you not, it made me feel awful, how the artist had felt bad and overwhelmed by my feedback despite it being helpful, and that they had shoved it away for that time offended by it. They felt attacked despite the neutrality of the tone. I use a 3 step device in feedback when I'm applying it seriously. State 1 positive then 1 negative; state positive and then negative; and then state a positive and then a negative but end on a positive note. Mean while being sure to keep my tone neutral/positive as much as possible. So when we later had this discussion she did thank me for the feedback but what was good for both parties and her especially was that she realized that she wasn't ready to enter that arena in art. She told me she would have to work on thickening her skin before trying this again. I left her with more positive feedback and told her that to keep trying to dip a toe and that eventually it will help with thickening that hide towards feedback, but I told her at her pace and no one else's. I wished her good luck and ended up making a friend/watcher. Pretty neat experience but also a valuable learning experience for me as well.

Truly amazing. I literally deal with this constantly. Especially in real life. But the one I got recently was some girl picked up my skectch book and just criticized one of my drawings without me asking her to. It wasnt even constructive. I snapped on her and told her no one asked you to come near my desk touch what isn't yours then proceed to bother me. Walk back to your hole. She always has something to say. ANOTHER THING IS, WHY DO PEOPLE SAY "oh...her/his art is better than yours" I could care less.

Great video. I love all the types of critics you touched on. You have quite the talent for finding the truth and relaying it with humor. I would like to add the following critics: "Praises you because they love you" critic. The type that feels you can do no wrong, everything you produce is a masterpiece, and they wish they could be as talented as you". Relatives tend to fall into this category. Also, the "this is good, but I know you can do better" art critic. Maybe you just spent 90 hours producing that art piece and gave it your all, and a comment that just states you could have done better is crushing. My all time favorite is the critic who says "I could do that". What does that mean? It is so bad even they could do it? So good, but they are better? It looks like what everyone else made? Who knows what they mean?? Sometimes I want to hand them the supplies and say "show me!"

I tried to have a constructive conversation with a "Your work stinks" critic. I ended up thinking it was hilarrious because when I asked what it was that they didn't like they just said "it stinkz" again. It honestly didn't hurt my feelings. It just made me question the intelligence of humanity. I think some of these end up being very young artists who are trying to give constructive criticism but just don't know how. Like the "orange" bit.
