I Tried Following ONLY The VOICEOVER of a BOB ROSS TUTORIAL

Today I followed a Bob Ross Painting tutorial...listening and following ONLY JUST THE VOICEOVER! So basically, I couldn't see anything, I could only hear the tutorial. It was SO much fun to do and I hope some of you try it too!

And just an interesting factoid... Bob made three versions of every painting. One that was a guide that he always had to refer to which was placed off-camera (so you think he's looking and talking at you but he's really looking at his reference), the one painted "live" and then a refined version which he sold. :) So each painting was meticulously planned from the start - never feel bad that you cannot paint a masterpiece like his in 25 mins.

Not really! Bob DID do a great job of breaking it down and demonstrating that it was relatively easy (with a little practice) to get a decent landscape. Everyone I've known who has made an attempt at a tutorial of his has managed to do pretty damn fine work, even if they've never touched paint to canvass before in their lives. Your life isn't a *complete* lie. ;)

I'll say it's a bit of a fib then xD I really never knew that, but then again, everything on TV has to be prepared so it shouldn't really be a surprise! He could have ten copies, and his work is always magic

I think yours has it's own charm. The only major differences between the two is your trees are a different type and, instead of looking like it was painted on wood, yours looks a bit prehistoric, like how I would imagine the sky to look after a giant volcano has just erupted and wiped out all the dinosaurs in the area. Maybe you painted a volcano instead of a mountain. What I'm saying is yours tells a story, and that's very important.

I got a Bob Ross paint set for Christmas as a teenager. I couldn't even get the sky right and gave up. Ever since, I've been too intimidated to even attempt a painting that isn't a paint-by-number. I like those. They're safe.

This is a very old comment, but color mixing in general also relies on using the correct pigment for what you're aiming for. I once bought the wrong orange by mistake and was surprised to find my paint turning pink instead of brown when I mixed it!

Not too bad all things considered. And yes a fan brush will do that when put in water. The only fan brush that is made for acrylics that I know of is the one by the Silver brush co. Art Sherpa line.

Given that you were going in totally blind, with very little idea of the subject matter, or the colors he was going for, I think you did pretty darn good. You're a good listener. I'd have been lost from the get go. Then again, even if I had the video going in front of me, I would likely be lost from the get go. I love your videos. You're such a good sport - but I think you're a bit tough on yourself. Thanks. I just look forward to your new videos. I also love your Bob Ross Pop. I was so excited when I pre-ordered it and it arrived a day early. A little happy birthday to me present.

You have to do this challenge again with oil paint just because oil works the opposit of acrylics in that oil does not dry like acrylics and using brights vs light colors is reversed in the two mediums. I would love to see what kind of result you get with a different Bob Ross project.

Hey! Bit of a tip for you -- buy a color mixing wheel/pamphlet thing. It should be a sturdy card diagram that explains how to mix various colors. The basics for neutral colors are as follows: red + green = gray orange + blue = brown yellow + purple = brown The properties of these colors change depending on what pigments you're using and whether you're using warm or cool tones. In this case, Bob is using a warm red and a warm green, so they create brown instead of gray. Your red and green are probably skewing toward blue, which is why they're making a muddy purple instead of brown. Also, pallet knives are very useful for acrylic paint! Get yourself a solid, metal knife. Doesn't have to be expensive, but once I used my first metal knife I never looked at a plastic one again. As for fan brushes, they're quite useful for foliage, and the fact that the bristles group up like that is what makes it easier. You can create multiple dots or strokes at the same time, which saves a LOT of time and effort!

I actually did a Bob Ross painting party recently. It is possible to add liquid white on the canvas with acrylics! You just water down white paint and paint it on the canvas, then paint on top of that. Since acrylics dry so much faster than oils you have to work fast. It ends up looking quite different from his (I struggled a lot with the palette knife mountains!) but you can definitely get something approaching satisfactory with acrylics! Just goes to show what a genius Bob is :)
