That's awesome to know you went through it so you truly understand what it's like. I've had a total colectomy (amongst other surgeries) and need a ng tube when I have bad blockages. They are really uncomfortable and irritate your throat if they're in for ages. Sometimes I'm attached to a machine that pumps my stomach out, and once they tried to put contrast through the ng tube ready for my CT scan. That's the worst because my stomach's already full so it makes me vomit, which is terrible with a tube in and I feel like I can't breathe! Oh the joys! I'm in awe of how well Amy handles everything and I think it's great that nurses are taught empathy and compassion by experiencing some of what their patients will feel. 🌸🎈

@@cigisvirag_ I’ve had an NG tube before, and it didn’t make it hard to breathe through my nose, but I only had one tube in at a time. It can be irritating to breathe through your nose when you have an NG tube in because of how uncomfortable the tube is, but you get used to it. I can’t speak for anyone else, but in my experience it’s not much harder to breathe through the nose with an NG tube in.

They'll admit me, pump me full of fluids and not be able to come close to stopping me from being sick. Send me home and a week later I'm back at square one. You don’t “have” to do it yourself, unless you feed at home For the most part feeding is a short term thing that happens at the hospital but there are people who do need it long term and therefore do it at home themselves. But they are always instructed on how to do it safely.

  • @christamachelle6984

Cerulean Lion alot of people "have" to do it themselves so they don't have to go to the hospital every single day to feed etc. Just like people with feeding tubes that are placed directly into the stomach. And, of course they are trained to do it. That does not change the fact that she is brave for doing it herself.

Hey guys! Firstly thank you for 1 Million views 😱 and secondly I just wanted to explain why I have the tubes in the first place and what they are for since everyone seems to be asking the same questions, guess I didn’t explain very well sorry 😅 So I have something called Gastroparesis which means my stomach is paralysed and doesn’t digest food properly so I use the first tube the NJ (Naso-jejunum Tube) to feed me my nutrition and that goes into the intestines and bypasses the stomach. That tube stays there and does not get removed. The second tube, that you see me place in the video is an NG (Nasogastric Tube) which goes into the stomach and I do this to drain my stomach contents (bile etc.) to stop me from being sick all the time. I struggle to digest my own bile which is why I use the tube plus I can drain any liquid that I drink, so I can drink thinks I want then drain so I don’t have to be sick. Hope that made sense if you have any other questions please feel free to ask 😊

You are so brave ❤ i just came across your channel randomly and oddly enough I have been struggling with my GP diagnosis. Hardly any1 knows what it is here, even alot of drs dont know much about it and so i have to go see specialists out of state to the Mayo clinic in Minnesota. (I live in rapid city, SD) They didnt know what was wrong for the longest here, why im alwys in so much pain or why I cldnt eat without getn rlly sick, was getting so skinny and malnourished which was beyond frustratingly horrible but finally got diagnosed with gastroparesis about 1yr ago. Having no answers 4 so long was rlly terrifying, being in the hospital so much and got to the point where I just thought i was gonna die.. Made me rlly scared/sad learning about GP but atlst its not a mystery anymore, i feel like im on the right path and I can finally see a shimmer of light at the end of this dark tunnel. Mine came from years of bulemia and years of having to be on harsh pain meds. (All in the past thankfully).. Im not on feeding tubes rn, still having to do annoying tests, im mainly on an all liquid diet atm and its so hard to put on weight I hate it.. This has been so hard to adjust to. Its just so dang hard physically, mentally and emotionally. Also alot of my friends just dont understand at all, they think i can just stop it, eat and gain weight they just dont get it or why I stay home sick so much. They arent supportive so Ive sort of just become a hermit because of stuff like tht so I dont have to deal with explaining myself over and over again.. I went from 145 to 100lbs so fast, im 110lbs atm, still underweight but am hoping to gain more. Pple just dont understand gastroparesis and how it works. Its not like i can just make it go away or that i chose this. :( If I cld eat I wld, I hate not being able to just eat what i want, when i want.. I rlly hope to be strong like you 1 day. Also i guess if pple rlly cared and were my friends they wld research GP or something and atlst try to understand.. Im so scared of the yrs to come and how it will just keep getn worse. =( I definitely need to stop researching so much cause it just freaks me out.. You're extremely inspirational and im rlly glad i came across your channel! Im definitely subscribing, idk any1 else here in my lil city with GP, im in some support forums online but your videos are more personable and are so helpful. Ty for being so open about your gastroparesis, you're so happy etc and it definitely makes me more positive/optimistic about the future. I have narcolepsy 2, that 1 is horrible as well but im gonna shut up now and stop rambling before this ends up being a novel. Im sooo sorry this is so long its just so awesome knowing that someone can truely understand and makes me not feel so alone in that aspect of my life. Seriously TY so much for making this channel! ❤ Lol Nxt time I comment I promise it wont be so long and a scrambled mess.. 😂 Scouts honor! Much love to you and happy holdays Amy! ~Maria

Maria Solano I’m so sorry, Maria. I’ll be praying for you. While I don’t have the condition you do, I do understand what it’s like to have a serious medical condition that everyone seems to think you’re being overdramatic about and you can just “get over it already. It’s not that serious.” And all that garbage. People who don’t walk in your shoes surely know nothing about your struggles and if they aren’t willing to be there for in spite of that they aren’t true friends of yours and you don’t need them in your life only for them to bring you down even more. You deserve happiness and all the best things life has to offer! I’m really sorry that others are so quick to judge and that they try to make you feel bad about something that you cannot control. Don’t worry about those people, because no matter where they run, karma always knows their address and “she” will find them and sort them out for you. I know I can’t relate to your struggles, but if you ever want to or need to talk to someone who truly understands what it’s like to have a condition that makes life challenging, you can message me on Snapchat, Kik & Instagram. My name on all those social media platforms is @Allisonmarie567. I pray that God will pour out his blessings and healing upon you. Much love to you, Maria ❤️💕

Thanks for making all of your videos. I have chronic pancreatitis and chronic gastritis and have not yet been tested for gastroparesis but I don't think I have that. Many people with CP in Facebook groups for CP that I'm in also have gastroparesis and I can see how much it affects your lives daily. I love how despite all of these hardships you still smile and get up and get ready daily. I know there's many times where you probably don't want to move or get out of bed and do anyways. I had a surgical feeding tube to adhere my stomach to my abdomen for an emergency surgery to save my stomach tissue and BOY does seeing stomach contents bring back memories. I wasn't fed through my feeding tube as it was just used for adhesion but it was SUPER fascinating to see the food I was eating in that clear tube. Not fun when the lid came off from the pressure and spilled all my stomach contents all over me in my sleep. Probably one of the first surgical experiences I have. You are brave and a true icon. Thank you for sharing and educating so many people on this little talked about subject.

This was so interesting to watch. My daughter had a feeding tube inserted a couple of days after she was born but because she was in the neonatal icu I couldn't spend the night with her so I came in and stayed all day till visiting hours were over but they inserted the tube during the night and I believe they left the same tube in the whole time but thankfully she only needed it for less than a week. At least now I know how they did it.

Shayan yes, I have gastroparesis and vomiting with an ng tube is much worse than vomiting without. Often you can throw up your tube, meaning the part of the tube that was in your throat will come up into your mouth. Sometimes you are able to swallow it down however it isn’t easy to swallow back down so you may have to pull the tube out and not be able to get it back in. Hope that was helpful

I know how hard it can be to place ngs- I've placed over 50 myself, for feeding but now for draining. But the key pieces of advice I could give is that everyone has different shaped nasal passages, so what one technique works for one will not work for another. In fact, even in one person they have completely different shaped passages, so have to use different methods accordingly. I know every hospital has an opinion on the correct way to do it, but looking in the back of the throat will not tell you if the NG is in the right place or not. Every time I've placed a tube, I check my throat to ensure it hasn't coiled, but you cannot tell the difference between it being in the stomach or in the lung just by looking at it. Whether you're feeding or draining, you should always check the PH, as you can't always tell if a tube is in the lung. By not following the proper steps, you are at risk from a lung infection.

Also, an 8fr can drain really well, it depends on the holes in the tip that sits in the stomach. If it only has one hole, it will drain very little, but if it has 4 or more, it'll drain just as well as a 10fr or 12fr. Rylles from Pennine Healthcare are excellent, I can only use 8fr or smaller, and this brand are specific drainage tubes, and catheter bags fit perfectly on the end when you're out of bags!! They do 8fr to 20fr size- wise. If you're struggling with not draining very well, it might be worth enquiring about them. If you want anymore details, please let me know. I hope you're having as easy a day as possible xx

+Hann Swift I'm a bit puzzled... If you've had it many times in your stomach, are you SURE you don't feel something is wrong when it's down your lungs? I've been inserted with feeding tubes over 300 times (anorexia) and only 1 time I felt something was VERY wrong, and I started coughing and not getting air. All the other times were in the stomach and easy once you got used to it. I think I would've noticed it being in the lungs, but if you're not familiar you should definitely check the first 20 times or so. Maybe my nasal anatomy is easy, so it never goes down my lungs, but I can't imagine NOT NOTICING it went so wrong?? Also, a lot of the times the staff just drew back the syringe and seeing stomach content, and then going ahead to feed me without checking PH. They usually pushed down water before starting with the feeding though, maybe as a precaution. Oh, and I've never done it on myself, just had others do it. But back then I knew exactly how it felt when it was right.

You are *quite* likely to be able to tell that it's in the lungs and not the stomach, but not everyone has the coughing sensation. Aspiration of stomach contents with a pH test is the only 100% safe method.

Amy, to you and everyone else. just because you can see the tube(s) in the back of your throat does NOT mean that it's in the stomach. The whole area where the larynx, vocal cords, epiglottis is well below where you can see it easily from the angle you show. Now some people may not need to do this, as they may know how it feels when it goes to the stomach and not the lungs, but by far, the best way to test if it is in the right place is to take the syringe and put a bolus of AIR through the tube, and ideally there would be a 3 point check with a stethescope checking both lungs and the stomach for the sound of air. Now, for someone who is only draining with that tube, it's not so critical. But god forbid someone puts water or feeding supplement through the tube and find out that it's in the lungs. Understand here that one of the other differences is that pretty much anything including the tube going into the stomach is not as big a deal as for the most part, the stomach acid will take care of any pathogens. This of course is not the same as a tube going into the lungs. Hang in there and remember that you ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

This is not correct. If you actually look at current research on nutrition and enteral feeding, you would know that injecting air and auscultating the stomach or lungs with a stethoscope is NOT recommended. The gold standard is a chest x-ray. And yes, while this is obviously not possible while at home or beyond a hospital or similar setting, the best way to know where the tube is, is through pH aspiration. The differences in the aspiration pH determines where the tube is, i.e. gastric aspirate = pH 2-4 and a respiratory aspirate pH is >7.

  • @84953

    @84953

Hi Alex. You may very well be correct. My experiences are from working as a RRT many years ago (20+). My experiences were in a hospital setting and yes, the gold standard is the xray. However, there may be times that you need to confirm very quickly that the tube is in the stomach, and listening for air is much faster than looking for chem strips and drawing a sample of fluid. With that said, I am in no way suggesting that someone goes against the training that they have had. BTW, this applies even more so if it were the opposite, an ET tube placed into the airway. I've seen too many situations where in an emergency situation, the three point check wasn't done and the tube was in the stomach not the lungs. Enough said by me. Hang tough.

Too many people have died as a result of failures using that test. if you look at the National Patient Safety Agency you will see the information. The initial test is to aspirate and ensure pH of the liquid is below 5.5. If in doubt go to xray and have the placement of the tube verified by a Dr.

We are definitely not recommended to use the whoosh test anymore. No one needs a tube so urgently that you don't have time to pH test. I had to have one of those and hated it being inserted. I screamed the place down as they were pushing hard and I kept gagging. I was in an eating disorder unit for 5 months but they didn't realise I have actually got leaky gut syndrome so my weight was always low and I couldn't gain. I'm still only 5 stone 6 and no matter what I eat it comes straight out the other end in a matter of 10 minutes. I'm 43 years old and my weight sometimes drops to 5 stone 3 is I eat too much. I won't get anything done about it as I suffer from PTSD. I just live with it. My GP is fine about it and is keeping an eye on me but I only see her once every 3 months. Your brave and I admire you. This was super informative, thank you for sharing! I had an NG tube placed just over a week ago and it was pretty traumatic - the first tube was a full size NG (think like 20fr), and I'm a pretty tiny person with small airways, so they couldn't get it in even with multiple tries. Next day they sent me to radiology to have a smaller tube placed (they used a 10fr NJ as the NG) and it took five tries, three in one nostril and two in the other before they got it down. Lot of crying and nasal bruising! I ended up having problems with it and my feeds and had to come back to the hospital, they advanced it so it's an NJ tube now. Seems to have helped with my feeds! But seriously, you're amazing. I can't even imagine placing a tube by myself...

When my (now 10yo) son was in the NICU he had a feeding tube among other things. Luckily for him things are going well and he no longer needs one. Thank you for sharing this,it's very informative.

I find this amazing because in nursing school they tend to forget to educate you on the fact that there are people who do this for themselves on a regular basis, they don't have to see a nurse or a doctor... Also I honestly think you explained it better than the way I was taught in school!

Hi Amy I'm a new subscriber and your such an inspiration to me. I had a stroke from a hole in my heart, blood clot traveled through and went to my brain causing me quite a bit of brain damage 😓 my whole left side is partially paralyzed and life can be hard at times but finding your channel is a great positive thing for me! God bless you and keep on inspiring!👼🧚‍♀️💃🚶‍♀️💗
