What if Jedi and Sith just turned off their lightsabers in the middle of a duel? Seems like it would be a winning strategy!

By the way, there's lots of ways to make this technique work that weren't shown in the video. The most obvious one that comes to mind is if you're attacking and they're blocking, you can just turn it off/on for an easy bypass and kill.

  • @natchu96

    The turning blade off stumble really only works when the two duelists are already pushing against each other, you can't completely cancel forward momentum no matter what you do but some sort of off-balance response should still be possible if they know what they're doing. Now passing the blade through just seems suicidal and relatively useless.

  • @bobbirdsong6825

    @bobbirdsong6825

    @maxlohmusic Anyone who’s ever fenced or boxed will dispute this because it doesn’t make sense. You can simply… move your lightsaber into them once they turn theirs off. Given how long a lightsaber takes to ignite and turn off anyway, it’s not practical because there’s a variety of force moves that are more effective and accomplish the same thing without getting rid of the thing that keeps you alive.

  • @MaxLohMusic

    @MaxLohMusic

    7 ай бұрын

    @@bobbirdsong6825 Why do you assume I haven't fenced or boxed? You simply aren't thinking it through. First off you're obviously not going to use the technique if it would've resulted in you being skewered; you would've sidestepped in some way to prevent that and allow you to capitalize on it. Secondly there are tons of ways to use this technique beyond what the video portrayed, which you can imagine using just an ounce of creativity. The most obvious one being when you attack and they're blocking, you turn it off and on really fast to bypass the block. If they've committed to the block because they assumed you wouldn't use this technique, there's literally no counter.

  • @mat8791

    @@mehcide4767 Weight is not a problem, applied force is a problem. Weight or not, you still push your lightsaber into the other's... Beam? Beam which provides resistance, it pushes back. Powering off the lightsaber means that suddenly all the force applied goes at once. Sure, having less weight makes it more maneuverable but it's still a surprise and a few moments to get back into a stance. Those few moments can be the difference between life or death. Then again I may be reiterating what you just said, I didn't really know what you meant.

It's an obvious lore hole that you're expected to roll with, there will never be a solid enough explanation that won't just be a crutch. There was a CGI trailer for The Old Republic that featured this kind of constant flicking of the switch, it looked cool. Edit: to everyone who says Sith don't do it cuz it's honourless\cowardly\they have standards: there might be some Sith like that in the expanded universe, but in George's movies we see only Sith who don't give a damn about such concepts. Palpatine playing tricks on everyone, Anakin stabbing brethren in the back and killing children, Maul bitch slapping Qui Gon, Dooku running away when things go south. Tell me once again that this move is "too cheap" for them.

    There were also lightsabers equipped with “flicker blades” or something to that effect. The idea is that they would randomly turn off, just for a split second, so that even the wielder didn’t know when it was going to happen. The idea is that since there was no method for activation, there would be no tell that it was coming, and the opponent would have no way of reacting in time. However, using one of these was incredibly dangers, because if you were ever the on on the defensive, that random flickering could cost you your life. So you basically had to play all out offense when using them, never giving your opponent a chance to get one over on you. They were eventually outlawed for obvious reasons.

    @@Gen0ration9k what you are referring to is a style that had the blade RANDOMLY turn on and off so it would surprise both combatants. the one who uses it would have trained to better react the randomness. It needed to be random to mess with the force telling your opponent your intention of turning it off. turning off a saber mid-combat is extremely dangerous because among other things force sensitives can see the future, sense danger, feel the power fluctuation of a lightsaber, and move so quickly as to take advantage of the mechanical time it takes for a lightsaber to turn on and off. one of the darkside's many powers is to cloud the force making it harder for lightsiders to see the future and anticipate their actions. so the on off moves work best for a darksider then the jedi in this "100% cannon clip" from star wars. on a side note the 4 sith we see in the saga, are all expertly skilled in saber combat. they are all to arrogant to try this, even vader who by all evidence invented it and used it to beat yoda.

    This was addressed in legends, and it was said that it was a "forbidden" move that both the Sith and Jedi banned from their trainings. The Sith viewed it as a move only the weak would use since they believed it showed that whom ever used it lacked the skill to actually win a duel the traditional way. The Jedi just viewed it as unfair and uncharacteristic of a Jedi, so they banned it. I think they even associated it as a "darkside" technique at one point.

    The joke here is that yoda uses his bodyweight to bounce off of the lightsabers. He will flip into a collision strike, then because he is small, he can take the return force from the 200 lb opponent and he gets bounced like when you double jump someone on the trampoline. He turned off the lightsaber before he could do this (like moving the trampoline from under someone) and he hit the ground so hard he died

That and, technically you can probably modify a lightsaber to be 'non lethal', which is what a training saber is anyways by jacking up the electromagnetic containment field all lightsabers have. I practice longsword and actually just learned a similar technique to this that involves doing an overheard slash, but midway through the slash you fake out and pull back into an overhead guard. This leaves your opponent exposed as they would still be in mid reaction to the initial slash, thus leaving their entire side exposed to your now pointed blade and you can just stab them. It's proven to be a very effective technique in my limited uses of it so far. This whole retreating the lightsaber thing reminded me of that technique and I would totally be turning my lightsaber off mid combat too if they were real. lol

In actual combat your aim is to target your opponents body, not their weapon. Which means that if I strike at you, you block my strike and suddenly remove the weapon which you used to block my strike with, my strike will continue towards the original target which was aimed at you. I would not suddenly falter away from you, because you are in the line I was aiming and pushing at. The joke works here visually because they are not trying to actually hit each other, they are just trying to push against their opponents weapon.
