Anyone who ever feed Geese in the park knows what happens when you start handing out bread.

When we had the Texas ice storm in 2021, our heat went out and our neighbors graciously let us borrow a space heater. I had a newborn baby and we stayed hunkered down in his nursery. I would rock him and cry in that warm room. Both from gratefulness for the heater and also disappointment that I wasn’t prepared. It was game on from that point on for my preparedness journey. But I’ll NEVER forget the kindness of my neighbor.

Your comments about ex-military are spot on. Two of the most destructive men I’ve ever worked with were ex-military and thought they knew it all plus were very strong type A personalities. They destroyed teams at work and had very hard time keeping their marriages intact. One of the best bosses I ever had was also a veteran but quiet, capable and humble. That’s the kind of vet I want in my group. The first two bozos would be turned away.

Ya when my grandparents passed, we found over 100 jars of canned food and money under their house. Times were different, people were different. I’d sure like to go back in time and talk to them a little more

I'm a master custom cowboy boot maker in Texas. And a leather crafter in general. I've often thought that I could fall back on boot and shoe and leather repair during SHTF. Thanks for bringing that up.

In the gold rush days the Canadian police wouldn't let people pass through to Alaska if they didn't have 1000 pounds of food and supplies to survive the first winter. I hope to be able to help some but I know that I can't help everyone. If they show up at my house they better have 1000 pounds of food.

I get tired of people saying that they have a gun and will take from people so they don't have to be prepared!

That is a two way street. Just because law may not arrive, doesn't mean that training does not exist. Theoretically asking, if they can't even save up some food - how likely are they to be training with a weapon? Often it seems they assume that all the rest of society are docile fools. Eventually they will meet a match.

My UPS driver has seen allot brought to my house. He said jokingly I know we're I'm going to go. I politely said, your good dude but that's last thing I want to hear. I have limited supplies I would suggest start buying your own.

Are churches now so greedy or dysfunctional, that they would not even plan or want to set up soup kitchens? Why aren't churches and synagogues prepping? Aren't they already somewhat aligned to be peoples survival tribes? At least some places of worship are prepping in the sense of taking security seriously, quietly encouraging members to conceal carry. Maybe they have no intention of being a soft-target for trouble-makers. Perhaps some Jews are doing likewise, since hating on Jews seems to be strangely trending?

@@chesslover8829 Canned food can also be eaten cold. I do not always re-warm leftovers, especially if there is something that should not be reheated in the clam-shell. It is also beneficial to live in an area that rarely has freezing weather. If you have a fancy enough solar backup system, it might be possible to run a small window air conditioner, and not just a refrigerator. But aren't such systems very expensive and complicated? However, maybe by not running any fan, it would be easier in the quiet to hear the sounds of intruders?

Yes, family is a big problem. I have told them for years to prep. They just laugh and don't think anything is going to happed. My brother told me, why do you need more than 50 rounds ? if you can't stop it in 50 you shouldn't have a gun. He is only thinking of a single incident. Has no clue what is coming. No food preps or water or anything else. I gave up trying. But I would say 99.999% of the population believe the same. So neighbors will also be a problem.

Thank you for addressing this! My brother in law made the comment “I know where we will go”. I looked at my husband and we both politely let him know that he’s more than welcome to come with his own preps but don’t expect for us to take care of them. We have kids and he doesn’t and we are preparing now to take care of the 4 of us. He needs to start preparing on his own.

A close family member that's 30 with 2 small boys aged 1 and 3 is doing nothing to prep but instead is thinking of having another baby. Just oblivious of what could happen I feel sorry for her.

Glad you guys are addressing this NOW, while there's still time. We've all had family or friends utter those words, "If the SHTF, I know where I'm going!" And generally, it's said in jest or perhaps as a "probing statement", kinda to judge your reaction and to see if that will save them from the hard work of "prepping". In the past, I've responded with, "Don't come empty handed!!!" I'm especially averse to "helping" friends or family whom I've warned-repeatedly to get their arse in gear and start with small steps. "IF" someone says those words, one might respond with, "And what do YOU bring to the table?!?" Harsh??? Yes, but so is STARVING and watching your kids suffer and die.

We've got a little over 2 years of resources (food, water filtration, etc.. ) and seeds to carry us a bit further as well as the weapons and ammo to protect everything. We also have about 200 pounds of rice and beans trade with or parcel out to help others if absolutely needed. We follow the grey man approach and our friends, family and neighbors have no idea we are preppers.

I help 4 legged animals always. 2 legged animals are on their own. They had more money and time to prepare.

1. Keep in mind church and city sources you can refer people to...keep them moving away from your door. 2. You are right, educate people BEFORE an event. Try to get those people to start with a few EXTRA cans on payday. Moving on from there. During an event, I suggest it will frustrate the meet as the walker will already be overwhelmed by the crisis when they show up at your door. Be prepared with two levels of reaction -- you and a backup. 3. Family/close friends. We all have to prepare our heart now. Pre warn them but when they show up, have a small package ready to pass out. Something like an inexpensive noodle package and a can of tuna wrapped in a paper bag. Tell them this is it AND DO NOT RETURN. 4.During a crisis, you can tell how hard it is in the community. You should be eating just what you need to survive to extend your food stores. You should lose weight but not in line with those who eat much less. 5. Small portions cooked indoors and ate quickly to reduce cooking smells. Buy the way, fuel to cook will be valuable. Tiny or small stoves using wood scraps and twigs have value. I taught this topic for years and told the students, when this happens, wood fences will disappear quickly. 6. Learn what WEEDS you can gather to stretch your diet. Most people will revert to victims or hunters and gatherers -- from all sources. Those who live near by will see you and may follow the example and take some pressure off you. Last, plan and be prepared to guard you location 24 hours a day. Just know that snakes, predators and varmints are watching. Switch off. Good topic.

my view is that we have been attempting to wake up MANY folks, to be prepared, for years now. My best friend of 3 decades always remarked that she would come to my home UNTIL one day, I said it wasn't going to happen....she preps now. The worst thing I've seen is folks buy electronics, arms-overkyl and everything else except filling a pantry...so sad.

My philosophy is if they have skills of value and food themselves they can share, but need protection, I don't mind having help. If they have neither, they shouldn't be surprised that the next time they come back in a less than welcoming manner, they will be dealt with. I'm trying to survive with my family and want fewer people in my group I don't fully trust. Most importantly to be left alone.

It's a given. You don't work. You don't eat. You can't follow house rules, you're gone. We are all concealed carriers and even the great grandkids know how to handle a strap and blade and start a campfire from almost nothing. Family campouts are part of the training.

Tell your family high food prices have made it necessary for you to use up your preps so they should prepare what they can.

I don't know anyone that is a prepped like me. My friend keeps saying what are we going to do when there's no food in the store. I have told her over and over to start putting some food in her basement and stock up. She doesn't do anything so I I stopped telling her.

I've prep / do prep for a 1 year SHTF SCENARIO (general) in the and food and supplies department . My extended family thinks it's a joke beyond 2 of my cousins. I also have live animals,grow vegetables,and a well(water) which can/ should extend that 1 year and supplies in best case scenario. I also purchase / make a extra 1/3 of dry goods/ preserved foods and general supplies for " family" & " friends" who will have to learn the hard way. If I have to bug out it's a whole different story,but that's the absolute worse case and a last ditch scenario in my head. It isnt that hard to put a few more 5 gallon buckets of dried beans and rice up for hungry mouths. They last decades and are relatively cheap.

April 2020 sure open my eyes to how doubting family members ridicules a prepared family member, then crawls back to attempt to gain and not pay for those items one stocks up. “Are you going to replace what you use?” “No, I am your brother, you do not expect me to replace the items you stored and I used.”

I live in Seattle , it’s funny when people look at me crazy for prepping. I just ask them what they’d do if there was an earthquake

If you look, most Americans are getting what you call "handouts". We just tend to notice when it's minorities and immigrants receiving aid. And as long as you're looking, check out how long it takes an average immigrant to pay back to the Treasury for any aid they have received, and to start paying INTO the Treasury through their taxes. (About three years.) Immigrants will add trillions to our GDP over the next forty years. Or we could let racists cost us those trillions, and be stuck with more racists.

We've made up signs to deploy along the road to our house that says Trespassers Will be Shot. Beware of Dogs......and yes do have two large German shepherds that definitely mean business.

I'm not answering the door. My front door will be barricaded so i will only have one way in or out. I gave my non prepper family members each a prep bag, food and water, water purification and fire making.they have light sources and several sharp rools. I told them that i dont care what they do with every thing i gave them but dont expect me to do heroic measures for them since they made my life hell while i was working hard to be in a good position.

2020 opened my eyes I'm still not as prepared as I want to be but I'm working on it. I'm 56 installed flooring for over 30 years now I'm disabled I ruptured 2 discs in my back and broke my leg & hip so I'm limited physical y but I've hunted a fished my whole life I grow a garden I'm slowly getting back into shape. I pray every day shtf doesn't happen but I'm not blind I can see it coming. It's me my significant other and her son and I'm the only one prepping they think I'm just paranoid but like I told them being cautious & paranoid are two different things. The people that scare me the most are those that actually seem to look forward to a SHTF scenario, wherein they can strut their stuff, put on their gear and go out and shoot people. It's a fringe element, but they're out there.

I've been getting in shape for what's coming and yeah, I'm saving my old stuff and have suspenders so I look like I'm not well-fed.

I'm sorry, but my family is my only priority and I will not give away our chances of survival to people who didn't prepare. I've thought about this a lot. If you give somebody food today they will just be back tomorrow.

I plan to teach my neighbors what wild foods to eat. If they see me in my yard eating minors lettuce and chick weed, they aren't going to think I have lots of supplies. That plan will only work in the summer months. I fear for my garden at that point. As for my step children I sent all but one a food storage bucket. Another idea is if you deal with your frozen food immediately you can dry it.there is a way to make pemican with dry meat,,dry berries and peanut butter. It lasts a long time and people won't smell it cooking 2 weeks into the emergency.

Number one rule, all who are able work or they don't eat.

Live in S FL where folks are or seem to be impervious to down situations. Heck, I've seen people take their produce back to the store for credit because they stored up before a hurricane and were spared.

@wmluna381 The wife works at Walmart, and folks bring back water, milk, meat, the staples they buy ( beans, rice, noodles, and so on ). Some of the products they bring back can not be salvaged. What mentality.

My father in law stole tpaper from me during Covid. Very telling.

My family isn't welcome... To many painful memories of abuse. She wanted to go on trips to get expensive purses ( during Covid) she better have food set aside. I spent the past few years working on various skills...

Y'all mentioned your friend Don and his dad giving him hell for prepping, I've experienced the same thing! My Dad and sisters both gave me grief for having a few "freedom seed dispensers", but when the plandemic hit and the riots started, who did they call BEGGING and pleading for SOMETHING to protect their homes with?!?!?

I saw what happened when people were literally slugging each other on black friday at Walmart for the same discounted item in short supply and I ran to the check out lane. Or the time i was home watching the news and crews from the news room were reviewing how adults fought one another on Christmas Eve so their child received a Cabbage Patch Doll under the tree? Recently, with covid, the shelves were left empty at every grocery store that carry toilet paper and i barely had enough during lock down sheltered in place. Normally where i now live it is recommended to buy in bulk so you don’t run out every week to replenish because things can get real un natural during the year. And renting a storage locker is a bad idea! You are so right to becareful of a woman nursing to spread the word who gave her some provisions. Two guys decended on me for hand outs. And had to turn them away. I amnot the department of welfare.

Can you imagine how people who take antidepressants get short of meds will act under this stress???? 🙄

Careful about pine needles. That will also make a pregnant woman miscarry.

Why can't people just help themselves? What's wrong with that? Do lazy people really expect someone else in hard times to take care of their needs? I have a feeling those that don't prepare will die off quickly if America goes south. Stupid is as stupid does. Even Forrest Gump understood that concept.

People have been indoctrinated to be dependent upon others, especially the government. In a true SHTF event (e.g., full-scale nuclear war), there will be no government. Therefore, many will perish.

No blood family lives around us. I’ve sent them vids on doing some prepping, only to rebuff. Told friends about prepping some stuff, it’s been met with laziness. Don’t think I’ll be answering my door if anyone knocks.

You said you will tell the supplicant, "We only have (x) amount of food left." Bad answer. Those people hear how much you have left, it will--no matter how much or how little--seem like you have some or all to spare. In that case you should hope you will be able to defend against those with ill intent.

The right final leader with a council is important.

It's harsh, but so is reality. If they're not in my inner circle, then I have no interest in putting myself at risk by trying to support the unprepared. If they slept through the pandemic and shortages and Katrina and a thousand other examples, they're not an asset to the gene pool. For those in my circle, then yes, I'll adjust to the circumstances. IF, the community pulls their head out of their..sandbox, then I'll support the community effort in various ways. As for the desperation aspect, I'd treat those as any other intruder. I'm doing my part by not being one of that desperate herd. Without rule of law, that herd will be thinned. Again, they could have prevented that with some common sense. During the civil unrest, I told my mother's doctor, if she needed something to call me, and I would get it to her (her husband was an EMT, also worth saving). During the craziness of the TP and other shortages, I supported the local post office gals, because they were good people, and good people deserve to not worry about things while they help to keep things stable.

If you start giving out food, more people will show up.

Praying for you bud from Alabama. Im not sure of you circumstances, but here dried rice ,dried beans,and the buckets to store them can be acquired for about $ 200 american . Enough to last 4 people food for 3 months to 6 months depending on rationing . Rice& beans have plenty of Calories,protein,and carbs to carry on.

I’ve spent every weekend for the last year getting ready. Between pressure canning, freeze drying, Mylar bags and 5 gallon buckets I have invested my time and money. I’m not providing an easy life for no one. I’m exhausted and keep going. I haven’t done this for every Tom, Dick, and Harry .

Just try to think ahead and you’ll be far in front of most people

Brother w/wife & 2 kids said he'd come to my place. Told him bring lots of food. And on the real... might offer to take in one child, but not the whole family.

I carry a small plastic convenience bag to work. It has Tylenol, Tums, bandages, a Dollar Tree rain poncho, and eyeglass cleaning wipes. I had to remove it from my backpack after I had a company issued jacket stolen from my pack. I now carry it on my person. In short, most people are NEVER PREPARED. Another more generous kit I used to have in my backpack now stays locked in my car. It reaches the point where you have to refuse helping, because they never learn to think ahead. And I wont even go into detail about pens, a notepad, chewing gum or instant drink mixes (I work 12-hour nightshifts at a federal facility outside town, so a trip to a store or a restaurantis not permitted.)

People that prepare for People that prepare for the long term "issue" will become targets. They have to prepare for that also.

Decomp gives off a very unppleasant odor. Perhaps that odor will deter some refugees from coming near your place..same with the smell of burning flesh (as in animal hides, etc). You are right, you need a plan, and your group must agree to the conditions.

I don’t have a table. I don’t even have a bed. Finally, I don’t have 3 meals a day. I only get $75 a month for food. There are days at a time in which I don’t get a single meal a day. So when I go 2 days in a row that I get a meal a day, I am ecstatic! I didn’t eat yesterday but a friend brought me some milk and another friend brought me some milk, chicken noodle soup and my prescriptions, both in the same day. I am truly blessed and grateful. I try to prep in as many ways that I can find resources for. I need a rich family to adopt me before SHTF so I can show that I can be an asset in many ways, anyway. I can’t prep for others. I can barely prep for myself.

@@wannabe4668 No I can’t work. I am disabled. I’m on a fixed income. I check with all sorts of freebie resources to get extra food and a really good friend gets me milk and food on a regular basis but I only see her once every two or three weeks or so. I make it. I wasn’t complaining at all. Just trying to make a point that you don’t have to eat every single day in order to survive and that I’m grateful for what I do have. Too many people complain if they have to skip a meal here or there. Most people don’t know hard times. They only know that they had it hard that one time because they didn’t have pizza money.

Call local churches too...some have food pantries that might supplement your food provisions.

@@kimmin7422 Yes. Some of the local churches help including my own. My own church gave me store cards to buy groceries. Trust me, I go to all the local churches that have pantries. My apartment complex even has a free table where I can pick up groceries that other residents donate for other tenants. Thank you for the suggestions.

Crawl spaces are great. When I was a kid my dad cut a 3' sq hole in his closet floor, covered by the plywood he cut and carpet. He would store valuables there when we vacationed. (Probably more than I know, now that I "understand" the world better)

If people aren't trying to prepare at all (not even a little bit), it's kind of like the story of the Little Red Hen. The lazy barn yard animals were given the opportunity to help (even in small ways) mother hen bake her bread. None of them did anything. However, when it was time to eat the bread, all the lazy barn yard animals wanted some. Mother Hen said no...she had her own hungry baby chicks to feed. Maybe have a set of baggy clothes (too big for you to begin with) that you can start to wear if things go south. Then at least you look like you have lost weight.

I have mentioned prepping to people in my immediate circle. No one is really prepping. They say oh we have what we need, and I think they are so naive. They think I'm a conspiracy theorist. I've stopped telling them anything. They complain about prices, the economy, politics, anything. They just think everything is going to consistently stay the same and nothing to worry about or prep for. One day they will see, sadly.

In the Army.... ate C rations that were 40 years old. Not moms cooking, but it was edible. So properly canned food will last a very long time.

Question: how does one meet other Preppers before shtf? ( asked by a friend).

Duncan long.......a survivalist for 50 yrs has said leave the cities......now. Get to the country, not the suburbs, and buy some land. There is a book.....how to homestead on five acres. A family of four can grow all their food and fuel......wood...on just five acres. But u need to get your land now......and put some shelter on it.......a shed, a camper, a tent. Something. Its important u make friends with your neighbors. They can show u how to trow food on your land, watch your place in your abscense, and join u to defend your place if attacked by brigands from the cities.

I hope I don't live in even the small City I'm in now when the Prepper Showcase happens. But I know I will always try to help people, especially family.

One of my coworkers said he would wait for me to come to the door and take me out. As far as family....I know my niece will be banging on my door 1st thing.

I have a very great community to work with. Helps that I don't say anything to anyone. Anyone not in the group, or willing to work will be turned away.

Dam good stuff.

First to go will be those that are on insulin, oxygen, medication that keeps them alive. Then those that don’t have clean water, then those with inadequate shelter, then those that don’t have nutrition. It’s this way with any event that takes out power, transportation or medical care, from war to weather. We just have to look at Katrina it was the biggest disaster our country ever had and it took weeks to get help to that area. Just think about how it will effect you and yours if the help never comes!!
