yeah fr, they get a bad rep but they aren't that bad! hissing cockroaches have lil mites on them that clean the bacteria and gross stuff off of them so they're actually a lot more sanitary to handle than a regular ol' sewer roach (which can fly, and carry diseases, and freak me tf out). i still wash my hands after handling them but I do that with just about any animal, even dogs and cats

I’ve worked with Madagascan hissing cockroaches before (at a zoo internship; I’m also a biology major), and while they can make decent pets, that’s only if you don’t have too many breeding females. Obviously she’s young so she probably doesn’t know this stuff, but she clearly let the breeding population get out of control, especially since she lets them roam freely around the house (Madagascan hissing cockroaches actually need to be in a small living area like a fish tank cus they hate light! They’re also excellent climbers, and their tendency to climb things means you need to have a very secure tank cover. In addition, many states require permits to own them, and usually only males are allowed to be kept as pets-so as to prevent pregnant females from accidentally being introduced into the environment) Like with any pet adoption, you should always do thorough research before getting one, even if they seem like easy animals to take care of!

It’s just that like although MHCs are relatively easy to take care of, that’s only if you have the proper background knowledge and experience. It’s honestly sad that she has so many, because although they’re listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, they’re literally only found in one place in the entire world: Madagascar. These MHCs should be in a proper breeding facility at a zoo or animal conservation center, not in a suburban home :(

Apparently these are Dubia cockroaches, the kind bred for feeding reptiles and amphibians. They don’t survive well outside of active care, are a bit shit at climbing and they don’t stink as bad as other insects like crickets. Many pet stores sell them for cheap and it is probably where she got these ones from. I think it’s wonderful she is pursuing this and she’ll probably become an entomologist when she’s older, especially if she begins collecting other specimens, I just think she should have a space for them that isn’t inside the house, maybe make a dedicated space for them in a heated shed separate from the house. Also she should probably cool it on breeding those things, she has way too many and they really shouldn’t be allowed to wander around outside of the containers.

I'd much rather some dubia in my room than a lot of the alternatives lol most are literally FOUL. Tried to breed mealworms for a bit which may lizard loved the things but found out I'm allergic. The beetles smell so bad lol they aren't even dirty per say just since they are a stink bug basically... the smell lol crickets are the one that makes me want to vomit though. I'll be completely honest, when I first saw the thumbnail, I thought "oh, what the fuck, did she fill an egg carton with shit or something? That's disgusting." ...and then I watched part of the video, looked back at the thumbnail, and realized what I was _actually_ looking at. My first thought was somehow _less_ disgusting, and I unironically would have _preferred_ that when compared to _this,_ holy shit.

This is what happens when parents don’t parent and let their kids do whatever they want. There’s nothing wrong with her keeping a few Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Plenty of people keep them as pets. But she’s let them multiple completely out of control and the parents need to step in and put a stop to it before it gets even worse. Sell some to pet stores or something and keep only males. Parents, it’s ok to tell your kids no!

yeah, like any kind of pet it's possible to have too many and having too many pets is bad for both the animals and the owner. she's basically got the same thing going on with her cockroaches as cat hoarders and the like, and it'd be best for both the roaches and the humans if the number of roaches she looked after went down significantly

I mean, maybe they're selling the roaches as feeders, and it's all just been sensationalized for the viewers. They could make a pretty sizeable income by selling feeder roaches with that breeding population, especially if there's a lot of reptile/amphibian keepers around.

It's also ok to encourage your child's passions. She might grow up to be the world's best entomologist. Solve the garbage crisis. Roaches are "carriers" of disease, but if not exposed to the problem (as pet roaches aren't) they won't spread them. Good hygiene is all she needs to be safe. She already has it under control, though.

Fun fact: her dubia roaches are common feeders for insect-eating lizards. They need warm temps (90~) to breed, (which is why you can't buy them in Florida and I think Hawaii bc they'll become invasive) so they won't infest your house if you live in cooler climates. And a colony as big as hers can go for $100s, so her love of roaches can also make her some bank ;)

I’ve seen that full episode of My Strange Addiction. One of the things they always do is film them having a consultation with a doctor. The doctor palpated her abdomen and said she could feel her enlarged liver, and that she would need to be placed on the liver transplant waiting list immediately. While some of the people featured in the show seem like they might be faking or at least exaggerating their “addictions,” this poor lady was clearly absolutely devastated. She had admitted early on during the doctor’s consultation that she’d never really considered what was in all the plastic she was eating and the effects it could have on her body. It’s honestly the most heart-breaking episode I’ve seen.

The only thing I find cringy about the cockroach one is just if they're allowed yo roam throughout the house. They thrive best in their own special enclosures suited to their needs and there's a lot of different roaches that makes great pets! Them roaming freely is bad though is because their dead bodies ca attract destructive pests like rats or various scavanger beetles and obviously that isn't good. I just breed mine to feed to my reptiles and I doubt that's what she does with them, but it's a Greta excuse to have them in your home if you ever need one lol!

Sean: “I know there’s no Cockroaches in England” Oh no there is. There is Sean. They’re hardy bugs and can thrive on very little. A few species found in the UK are Oriental Cockroaches, German Cockroaches and Brown Banded Cockroaches. Had an unfortunate incident involving a delivery of dog food cans where one of them had been damaged in storage. It was covered in cockroach nymph shed and reeked of cockroach waste and rotten dog food. They’d been laid in the damaged can as there was a hole and the larvae/nymphs ate the dog food. Thankfully they must have moved on as there was no more food so it was just the shed, but it was still awful. But yes. There are cockroaches in England.

Yeah, that's one of my concerns. Because as much as they freak me out, I don't think anyone who takes good care of them (or really any pet like them) would just let them roam the house like that unsupervised (I know it was for the introduction but you can't expect a child to be able to make sure that that many will be safe when they're all out) or even hold so many at once. Like I hate them, I'd probably faint if any ever crawled on me, but they're still living things that are meant to be taken care of, and they shouldn't be in a place where they could be subject to unnecessary mistreatment. Someone really ought to regulate how much she has, she doesn't need crates upon crates of pregnant roaches to look after in a suburban home. Maybe bring a few to a zoo and let her visit them but don't let her keep track of them all by herself.

  • @johnlime1469
    @johnlime14692 жыл бұрын

Ok, I didn't expect her to have so many of the cockroaches, much less inside her bed.... She would be a really good candidate for a PhD student in biomimetics. UC Berkeley has a millipede lab where they actively study cockroaches' behaviors and make tiny robots out of them, because cockroaches are so resilient and can adapt to so many environments. I used to collect rhinoceros beetles when I was a kid, because they're pretty fecking rad. I've never found any stag beetles, which have 2 horns and much rarer to find from experience. So yea, I guess I can see where the girl is coming from. But I were in her position, I would probably try to contain, like, only a few in transparent plastic cages, since it's going to be really easy to run out of resources for them, you can only manage the lives of so many creatures at once, and you might lose count of them, leading to you ending up finding them in the middle of nowhere within the house.

I know right! Like, props to the parents for being supportive but SET SOME BOUNDARIES, SET A LIMIT. Like not only would that be disgusting but also a health hazard! Watching this as a insect lover with no response to roaches is hilarious. I've thought about keeping them before, but they're a bit stinky and my parents would implode if one escaped. And they can escape pretty easily if you don't close the enclosure properly. I've had a mantis and a locust and I'm looking into keeping moths.

I have always had a fascination of bugs, ever since I was like 5 I had bug books and toys and bug hunting tools. But I would never had kept so many bugs in a place where people who don’t like them live, maybe like a few pill beetles or even a mantis is fine but thousands of cockroaches that stink and carry illness in a house of people who don’t like them is just hell

  • @GinnyTheSquid

I personally hate cockroaches and my reaction to the cockroach girl was very similar to Sean’s. But, I think that it’s cool that she’s so passionate about cockroaches HOWEVER, she shouldn’t let them out of the containers like that. There is simply too many to keep track of when they’re outside the containers and a few rogue ones could very easily hide in corners of the house. Maybe the beginning segment was done by the TV producers for shock factor, but I have a hard time believing that none have ever escaped. I would NOT be okay with her letting the cockroaches roam free if I lived there.
