Truck Frame Restoration Using Simple Welding Techniques

Struggling with rust and cracks on your Chevy K5 Blazer frame? Fear not! In this 5-part series we start with a frame restoration where Austin teams up with John Etie from Strong Hand Tools repairing a truck frame. In part 1, they use the Everlast Hurricane 220 to cut out all the new supports with by plasma cutting before switching over to MIG to weld them on. They also attach a fishplate to a known weak spot in the frame to prevent cracking. Check back soon for part 2, where they will be replacing the floor pans.

    Old square body K series are notorious for frame cracking at the steering box . best to do a long tie swap over .

    If you guys would use the correct recommended cut pressure of 65 to 72 psi, you'd get cleaner cuts. 49psi is too low and can do long term damage to the torch and cause excess consumable wear.

    Being a lower than a novice and an obsessive one, would it be an overkill decision for me to weld fish plate with 7018 stick?

    Overkill? What’s the worry here? 7018 isn’t particularly expensive to use. But then I overbuild lol. Id use 7018 myself but id be interested in someone saying there’s a better way.
