I started welding at 16, had an after school job building bridge parts and pipe skids. Once I graduated I started full time. Did it for 7 years and then I ended up starting a dumpster business. I always wanted to have a fully equipped weldshop though so right now I'm working on doing that just so I can build cool shit and fix/build dumpsters. Will be forever grateful that I was a welder/fabricator. I made a good living and was able to start a business with some hard work and my skillset
I just found out that Mr. TIG (Wyatt Swaim) had passed away in March of 2022. Mr TIG was a big part of this channel and helped a lot of people through his videos. Yet I was really surprised when I found out that not a single tribute video was posted or any mentioning of this information in this channel. The only tribute video I seen was posted by his son with less than 1k views. Honestly, you should be ashamed of yourselves.
Whether you have a welding business, or ANY type of business - great advice on this video. Nice job, Kevin. Thank you.
I work in a small town at a gas station but it’s growing rapidly quick. I meet with all these contractors and entrepreneurs who come in and go. They need welders but importantly with their own equipment. I have found work and it’s not at all late. 8 new suburbs popping up and once they’re up business surrounding will pop. That means building raising and a lot more in between. So def a lot of work coming to my area and I can’t wait to hustle on the side here soon and grow into my own company when the work is finally here to make big money.
Some really good advice, i appreciate it. Many businesses owners would not share this info. Top bloke.
Can also go by local plants after getting an LLC and insurance and ask to speak with the maintenance supervisors and get more work than you know what to do with, at their location with their shop and tools and consumables. They typically hate paying other peoples shop rates and its truly a lot less hassle and work for you. Just an alternate method of course
very well said, im just running a side hustle now. i have a good union job and will keep the side thing going for some extra money in my pocket but theres a lot of good info said here to help me out
Great info, thank you for sharing from your experience...
Thanks for your contributions your indeed expert on this field
Thanks for the info.
I like the cut of your cloth, my brother. Solid advice to those who are up and coming. That last piece... Grit. It's not BS.
Thanks great info!
Man, great info... Those metal business cards are a great idea. You do some beautiful work and I love your website layout. Do you have anyone tweaking your SEO for you?
Nicely put!
I've seen a business spend over $2K/month on Google or Facebook ads. That $2K might solicit 100 quotes, yet only 2 would actually be purchased. This was a $400K/yr business with around $12K/mo in bills with around $200K in equipment. After 6 years they closed because of the hassles. Shippers would damage products. Even though insured wouldn't pay the claims. There's more things to be aware of out there on your own. Good information, thanks for sharing. I look forward to listening to the podcast and watching more videos.
11:36 yeah 100% agree on that. I keep a cheapo chinese torch with my gear that takes the easy to find tweco consumables. Nice to have when If I ever don't keep up with the centrefire nozzles/tips and run out for my main torch on a weekend.
This is great advice i’m 19 and welding at a shipyard now with a few certifications. I would be really interested if you could make a video about the smaller level of making a side hustle out of welding outside of your job such as how to get your first customers .

I always posted my welds on instagram stories and then had people hit me up and then word of mouth spread quick. Especially since there aren’t a lot of mobile aluminum stuff down at the docks.
I appreciate all this information, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart I really appreciate everything, I am wondering if you were sponsored by that blue one app or whatever it's called, don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with you being sponsored by me if you are and everything it's just hard to take you know people seriously when they're being paid to say something compared to somebody just saying it because they actually believe it, as a small businesses that's trying to grow and everything just like you were at one time, you just want to get straight info, thats all, no mean intent meant
Plesse excuse my spelling i had a stroke and spellings hard to get rite. Not sure if anyone cares but when I arrived in Australia 14 years ago I needed to be hitting around 70 hours a week. I did not know any locals or my way around but I did this a few times. I went onto google maps and looked at the suburbs 15 minutes drive from my place. I then made a short list of Heavy Steel Fab and welding joints in four suburbs bear me. Id have the companys name, the manager and directors name and a general idea of what their game was, like flux cored heavy mig work etc and Then srive there and walj in [ ALWAYS ] holding my youngest Sons hand. No shit... i never got to the last name on my area notes. I got instant employment because I was out loking for it , Im a father so i need to be reliable as i have dependents and just talk shit about the trade. I ended up specialising in all types of welding and ran my one man weldingservices specislist and yes, thats it. It went well while i made it.
Army welding could treat me well on the other side
Great video. Just subscribed to the podcast. We should do a cross over episode one day. I am the host of Forge Side Chat Podcast. a podcast about blacksmithing, bladesmithing and everything in between. With a heavy focus on talent in the great white north eh.
Devin Booker really switched career paths huh
I still miss Bob

7 am till 1 pm side hustle. 230pm till 11pm main gig. 5 days a week. Sometimes weekends working. Sometimes weekends off. Im up in Canada working in a shipyard building ships for the navy and coastguard for main gig. Side hustle is reinforcement welding steel in buildings for seismic upgrading for earthquake resistance. That could be main gig and actually pays more hourly but i have skin in the game. About 10k of equipment. Between the two jobs i will be just short of 180k. Still had 4 weeks paid holidays this year and took some long weekends. When you love what you do it aint work. Im just out here having fun in the puddles.
