In our quest for seeking out a more healthy and sustainable lifestyle, we made a plan that includes zero waste living, tiny home living and full-time travel. We considered buying an RV, looked at trailers and airstreams but settled on doing a bus conversion for our off-the-grid, tiny house on wheels. We bought a 1996 MCI 102 D3 coach bus and with the Bus Demolition and Interior Shell complete, we turned it into our Tiny Home on Wheels and are now traveling!
Some links are affiliate links and at no cost to you we may get a small commission that will help us cover the cost of travel.

I'm a bus driver (I own one just like yours too) and you have to keep an eye on the battery voltage during shifting issues. Transmissions are very sensitive to low voltage and voltage spikes. Alternator may be getting ready to check out. May not be your issue but good info to remember. Another thing to check is the individual battery voltage during these issues its possible that one battery's voltage is dipping causing the issue.

Thanks for this info!
I owned a 50-year-old Chris Craft Commander boat. Loved her yet I never knew what the next bump in the water would be. I do understand that stress. I never regret it though! Keep going and don't forget to laugh!
This is the problem with motor homes and bus conversions. Your home and vehicle are tied into one package. With trailers...if the truck blows up, you can get another one.
To second that last post which has good info as a trucker o/p for to many years electrical problems are almost always a grounding problem you folks have done such a great job on the conversion I wish you the very best
Hi Mela, Don, Pizzicato and Mr SweetFace, sorry you are having trouble with the bus, what an awesome place beautiful scenery, pray you get everything sorted out on the bus, stay blessed stay safe
You have a beautiful spot to camp in Texas 🥰. Prayers you get everything figured out for 🙏.
Hi Mela and Don. You got a perfect spot to relax in after sorting out all the bus problems. Good luck with that.
You say you are NOT a mechanic, but you are learning the same way we ALL do! You are! Just not a school trained.
New subscribers and we have an older Prevost Bus!! Enjoy your videos!! ❤Zack & Linda

Thanks for subbing
I am really surprised that you did not use a heat pump / AC for your mini splits Also, 3M clear film on your windshield will help save your windshield
Time to pause and give thanks to God that you have BEAUTIFUL weather and that all of these problems didn't happen in the rain, cold, and snow!!! ......Russell D.
00:15 "Hello"
I had a M C I 1971. It ran fine but it seemed so complicated. Also leaky windows. I went back to my 1972 international Schooley. Gas motor. Standard Trany. 27 ft. I live full time in my bus. I worked on it for the last two years. I'm finally just about Done. Ya all make me feel normal. I hope to see you two at Schooley palooza. Good luck.
Good luck💪💪
God bless you guys! You are doing great! I just want to encourage you! [Don't take all the comments to heart! Some will not understand until they experience similar experiences!] On my old Bluebird I have a Allison 3060. I had some issues, electrical, which I later found were so simple. Not related to what you had. But I'll bet they'll be a solution around the corner. I just wonder too, when driving up a hill, it will downshift, because, sensors in the transmission are comparing rotation speeds between engine rpm and first clutch pack I'll call it tell the TCU when to upshift/downshift. But also, if you had a brake dragging, not releasing on one of the wheels, it would be slowing you down, causing it not to advance to overdrive. Just some dumb ideas. Depending on the age of the technology some ECU/TCU will not retain error codes, and will only display it in realtime. You have to capture it then. Mine is a 2002, and it does not retain/or store error code. Only the realtime condition. The ECU may retain something though, I'm not sure. You'll definitely see an error code on the little shift display. Take a rest! Keep enjoying the journey regardless of stuff going wrong! Someday you'll look back on it all with smiles! Love to you both! Al in CT
There is a diagnostic port on your bus that might/should give you insight into the issues, there are several software systems that will help you read the codes. I would strongly suggest you get in touch with MCI tech support they are usually REALLY helpful and knowledgeable. let me know if you want the names of the software products.
I watched you build this thing and you did a beautiful job. it was hard work you had a dream. And I’ve seen a lot of people do the same thing but just like in a vehicle car truck bus van that has miles on it it’s gonna break so I guess I have to deal with it and it’s gonna cost a lot of money. But most people don’t have good luck with your adventure.
Good luck with bus issues. Enjoy your brake and get well rested.

no, you have to make wide turns ;)
Last time I saw ya'll, you were in Africa. Hope you enjoyed your home country, Mila, and hope Don enjoyed it as well. I followed you religiously during your build, and have followed your journeys some what faithfully. Hope you get through this bump in the road succcessfully. Don seems to be getting quite the education in wirint technology. Happy motoring!!!!!

Thank you!
It sounds like your alternator is bad. It's not charging properly and causing electric 'gremlins'. I just swapped mine yesterday for similar issues on my car. Just maybe.
Hello 👋 ❤❤❤❤
When was the last time you had oil and filter changed in transmission
On my 88 Newell with the Detroit and Allison had a similar problem. It turned out to be a ground connection thru the shift solenoid on the Allison. Do you have all the segments showing on the shift panels? If any are segments are missing it’s points to a ground problem and I would look at this. Once I found that problem and fixed the ground, all shift elements were lit. Contact me if I can advise more on what I did.
all vehicles that drive a lot are going to have problems. i have mechanical knowledge, though no experience with the bus and larger vehicles, idk how long the transmission stores codes for, if it does at all. it might be something you need a diagnostics tool for, but it might throw a code as its happening and may clear itself after a time because it doesnt see that error anymore.
I thought sure I was going to win-
👍
Why dont you call into Bus Grease Monkey to get your bus fixed he is in Nashville

Yes that would be a great idea. He knows his stuff.
Any person that would drive a 35yr. old bus or anything else for that matter around the country are fools .The bus is going to break down and that’s all there is to it it’s called fatigue so get use to it the spending will never stop

Properly maintained, some older diesels are more reliable than the new ones with all the electronics, DEF, EGR, and all that crap.

You can have more issues with new ones! Not many mechanics will have exposure to that technology. The older ones, more data available, and more mechanics will have experience with it.

You're little cynical. We drove over 17,000 km in our 23 year old bus this year with no issues this year other than a puncture.

I have a 27 year old truck and car I’d drive them anywhere. My bus is a 2002 bluebird tc2000! I’m planning on taking it everywhere when I get it done. Newer stuff breaks down all the time too. Just how good of a mechanic you are is all that matters. A fool is someone who assumes things they know nothing about.
