    Whenever I take one of my girls to the vet I ALWAYS get ‘what’s in the carrier’ Sometimes I get ‘EW REALLY’ quite frequently I get ‘is that a hamster’ 😂

    I had it at the vets the other day when I had one of my mice put down someone came over “I have to ask what have you got in the carrier” a mouse. She screwed her face up and I couldn’t help myself “it’s dead now, so…” 😅

    I get that too - usually I just say there’s nothing in it yet, but I’ve had a few people in the past see who’s inside and mistake my hamsters for baby rabbits 😂

    My carrier has stickers on it that say I have rats. One says "emotional support rat" and the other says "my rats think you're gross too" 😂I have never gotten anything other than an "awww, can I see?" reaction at the vet, but I am probably just driving away the people that would react negatively haha.

    4:30 when I got my rats from a breeder recently, she stated a smaller carrier is better because the rats will bounce around less in the event something bad happens. Obviously not TOO small though, the rats must each fit in nicely.

    I used the exact same technique for a ratto hotel stay in Turin, Italy once! 🤣 I had two mature and very social, well behaved rattos with me and I needed somewhere to stay for the night. I put them in a carrier inside a "bag for life" and boldly checked in with the rattos only a metre away from the manager 🤣 Then I sneaked their travel cage in the hotel through the back door! After checking for any dangers I even gave the lads some floor freeroam 😆

    Congrats Emi! Your new boys are adorable! A couple months ago I finally got the chance to have rats again after owning 1 sweet female years ago for about a week. She was a going away gift when I was moving states but my grandmother refused to let me bring her to live with us so I had to give her to a cousin. Anyway, my 6 ratties traveled about 4 hours in a vehicle to get to me and the previous owners stopped for short breaks about every hour to check on them and offer water, though they did of course have veggies in with them during the ride. They were a bit nervous and anxious when they arrived but settled in fairly quickly once brought inside and placed in a quiet room to "decompress". They have been absolutely amazing to watch and feed and I'm so glad to have finally gotten the chance to really experience the joys of true rat ownership and friendship. 🤘🏻❤️‍🔥

    Yes I've never travelled on public transport with rats but i know they do ok on trains etc but i can say definitely rats are fine travelling in the car they always fall asleep! and yes like someone else said a small carrier is best because even if the carrier is strapped in if its a large space they can still fly from one end to the other if you were to crash or brake suddenly (i'd never thought about this until someone else pointed it out to me). also the bag is a great idea if you are in public, i really don't care about comments but i would be worried about being thrown off if someone decided they didn't want them there

    I don't drive, so I take my rats on the bus every time we need to go to the vet. An hour or so each way. I have a rather large carrier - I think it's for rabbits - which I fill with fleece blankets and hammocks so they have lots of places to hide, along with some food and slices of cucumber or similar. The rats alternate between napping and testing the carrier walls for weaknesses so they can escape. While people definitely ask what's in the cage, and despite me always forgetting to lie, I usually get neutral to positive reactions! In fact I don't think I've ever had an "ew" reaction from anyone I've told about my rats. Often I get "Oh I used to have pet rats!" The closest to a bad reaction I got was my dad saying "you should just adopt the rats outside our house." Cue the "we have _ at home" meme.

    So cute!!! Can I ask a question, though? Are they just in the top half of your normal rat cage with your other boys below? I was under the impression that new rats when brought home need to be quarantined in a separate room until you start intros so they don’t spread any illness or cause any stress to either group. Is this still advisable, or does it depend based on specifics of your rats/where your getting your new rats from, etc. If they are just above your other boys, do the groups seem to notice the others there even though they can’t interact yet?

  • @Emiology

    @Emiology

    11 ай бұрын

    It really depends! If I’ve got them from a place I don’t trust like someone off of a selling site I’ll keep them in another room, but right now I don’t have any space in that room and I trust the breeder to have been honest. True quarantine would be in a completely separate air space so I’m not sure how much better them being in the room next door really works. Some rats won’t cope well with having other rats above them / in the same room for I’ve had some boys that would’ve been obsessive about trying to get in and it would’ve been too stressful, luckily none of mine seem to notice and I just pop either group in a carrier when they free roam so they can’t interact through the bars 😊 Most breeders tend to have this system I think

    @@Emiology Thanks for the reply! I live in an apartment and while I've only done the new rat intro process once, I did keep them in my one bedroom away from my older boys for the first few weeks, but like you, I wasn't sure exactly how helpful that was since it wasn't a completely separate air space and I wouldn't be able to create one. Hi emi! Just wondering, do you have to have a temporary cage for first time rat owners? If its important as they need to get used to everything and not get overwhelmed by a big cage, ill get a temporary cage. Just wondering as im doing loads of research!

  • @Emiology

    @Emiology

    6 ай бұрын

    It really depends. If the babies are small and you’ve got a full double critter nation for example I would split the cage in half so they don’t get overwhelmed and it’s easier to bond with them. Some babies and some cages like critter nations the bars can be too big for really small babies. You’ll need to get different size and temp cages eventually when you add new rats as you need different size cages for introductions 😊

Might also mess up their names and/or associate the names wrong... I'm terrible with that (which is the main reason I try to never have 2 similar rats at a time 😖) Is it an injury/healing well or am I seeing things like the light making it look like something else? Ref : You see it quite well when Toast/the dumbo crosses the screen between 17:35 and 17:37 You can also see some of it when you put them in the cage, between 5:23 (easy to miss tiny bit on Tiffin/top-ear) and 5:40 (hard to miss big bit on Toast/dumbo)

    HEY I HAVE A QUESTION! So, I have a rat that's about a year and a half old. He is in tact and is a rescue. He was housed alone for being a biter and aggressive. Towards me at first, he never showed any signs of aggression. When we tried to introduce him to my other in tact bucks, he would start to approach them from the side and lounge at them. This resulted in minor injury's that I failed to prevent as he was so focused on attacking them. My other bucks have never shown any signs of hormonal aggression and has never bit me. Yesterday, I was holding him and just walking around my room when he spotted one of the bucks at the cage and immediately poofed up with hackles and bit me extremely hard to the point where I had to go to the emergency room. He has not bitten nor been aggressive since. I also have several doe's that are all very sweet. Loki, the buck that bit me, does have one other cage mate though that's it. The cage mate is much younger but I do fear he may be aggressive towards the cage mate (Eddie) once Eddie comes of age 3-8 months. Should I take the risk and neuter him? And if I do should I put him with the doe's or try the bucks again?

    For now keep him in another room away from the other rats, wash your hands and change your clothes if you’re going to be holding him so you don’t smell like the others. If he’s getting worked up and has bitten you once he may bite again but he definitely needs to be neutered asap. After 6 weeks when his hormones have died down it’s up to you who you want to try him with, good that you have the does as another option as sometimes they need that and still don’t get on with males

    bit of an off topic question, but where would we send cage setups for reviews/reactions (if you’re still doing them)? Your gmail is listed as business inquiries only and I’m unsure where I would send pictures of my cage setup for my boys I’m getting in december lol.

    *SMH* Erf....ignore the haters! Honestly, if I'd been sitting next to you on that train, my reaction would have probably been much the same as that of a Japanese school girl: "EEEEEEEE, They're so KYOOOTE!!! What are their names? ....Oh M gosh, Shadow-the-rat ALSO has a Dumbo named 'Toast', but she's a little dwarf ratty" Or something like that, but, ya'know, that's just me. N-E-Way, I wanted to say that I feel your pain because personally, I've been getting a LOT of Flak lately in the comments section on my videos. "OH, your rats are sneezing too much" or "OH, Your cage is an absolute mess, clean it up & take better care of your rats!!!" *Banging....my....head...deep breath, THEN I respond to the trolls* 1. It's NOT a cage, it's an enclosure or habitat. (I don't even bother trying to explain the concept of 24/7 free roam to the zombie hordes). 2. (regarding the specific video in question) I cleaned their habitat 3 days prior, but it's a Rat's nest and it's ALWAYS messy, even when it's clean. I know a 'clean and sterile' habitat is what is most commonly associated with ' good health' in western culture, but with rodents, it's a completely different story. tl;dr = It's what makes them the most comfortable because it's lived-in. To do otherwise would be bad for their overall health; physically & emotionally! Honestly, I don't even BOTHER trying to explain why you leave 25% of the old bedding under the new stuff because these people are so brain-dead, it's just a waste of energy. 3. It's not SNEEZING, it's called 'trumpeting', is just a rodent clearing their sinuses, and is a perfectly normal behavior for them that they do dozens, if not hundreds of times a day. 4. *99% of readers have long since tuned out* ........WHYYYYY do I even bother??? ....oh, that's right! Ratties are so cute, and I'll keep trying until the heat death of the universe! 5. Cheers!!! P.S. Almost forgot to ask, but it looks like genetically speaking, they have a little roof (black) rat in them? I was wondering because of the way their eyes tend to bulge out of their heads in a way you don't see in most other fancy rats.

    I don’t trust my rodents’ carrier or the cat carrier I transport my guinea pigs in 😅 I just don’t trust those silly little plastic clips Edit: what specifically do you offer babies as extra protein? Like what foods, brands, etc :)

    No, especially considering the permanent cage has the other rats in it and they can’t just go straight in with them. Regardless if they’re you’re first ever rats I still recommend a slightly smaller cage for babies or splitting your main cage if it’s is possible as even the most confident baby rats can find that much space overwhelming when they’re settling in and it can be hard to get to them to bond with them.

    I hate how ppl are so ratist. My brother has cats he's paid multiple vet bills for. He heard I'd had my girl to have surgery and said For a rat!?! She's my pet. So im glad I didn't actually hear that in person. Because after the wk Ive had I'd of lost it.. Worry over Sandy's op( ratty) Then my rescue pygmy hedgehog died. Some ppl need to realise I don't really like cats, Im more a dog person. I don't like snakes or bugs. But we all are different we have different pets.and ppl just seem to go eww you have a greyhound( ex racing rescue) Rats!! Ewww why do you want vermin in your house.. Bloody hell say its a hamster thats cute, mention rat and the look on ppls face.
