ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Barn owl pair
Gylfie is an experienced owl. The day she paired with Dryer was special, since he was a rescued owl rehabilitated here at Fotherdale alongside Gyflie's previous mate Finn.
Barn owl courtship
But Dryer was awkward. Younger and inexperienced he seemed unsure of his role.
Gylfie took charge
But Gylfie soon took him in hand, even one day mounting Dryer in a bizarre role reversal.
Barn owl eggs
Her instigations worked because by June of that year Gylfie was incubating four eggs.
Protective owl mum
Soon-to-be dad Dryer was intrigued, but Gylfie was very protective of her egg clutch. Unable to get close, he turned his attention to becoming an excellent provider - bringing in more than Gylfie could eat!
Chicks hatch
By July the first chick hatched, followed two days later by two more. But it was five days before the fourth egg cracked and a tiny chick emerged, clearly weak.
Sad loss
Unfortunately this last chick didn't make it and then Gyflie did a shocking thing. She fed its corpse to the remaining three. Upsetting to watch, birds of prey will eat dead chicks before hey decompose and attract scavengers to the nest.
Dad Dryer
As the three remaining chicks grew, dad Dryer was clearly proud of his brood, but at times he expected too much of them. Watch him try to feed them prey whole, before they are able to tear it up.
Chicks grow
By four weeks, the chicks were regulating their own temperatures and Gylfie was able to leave them alone in the nest.
Names
Followers of this channel name them Thunder, Storm and Cloud and soon their characters developed. The eldest, Thunder had a caring nature and was spotted taking food to the youngest, Cloud.
First fledges
It was amazing to watch the chicks' first moments out in the world and to see, first Thunder, then each sibling, take to the skies.
Parental support:
But they didn't venture far to begin with. For several weeks Dryer and Gylfie continued to protect and feed them close to the nest.
Developing independence:
And as they improved their flying and hunting abilities, we watched them explore further from the nest site. Interestingly Storm seemed unwilling to venture very far.
Sibling bond
And the youngest Cloud was keen to stay close to big sister. They took up residence in Beech stump, but this is tawny owl territory and they soon learned to keep out.
Gylfie's display
Although it wasn't until Gylfie paid them a visit that they decided to move on. Gylfie knows better than to trust fledglings - she once lost a chick to a returning fledgling and she won't risk that happening again.
Storm
Juvenile barn owls usually disperse at distances up to five miles. But Storm was spotted frequently on camera in Ash Wood. Perhaps we will get to continue to watch her story in years to come.

What a beautiful, funny, but also sad video. You talk briefly about Finn, but nothing about Barney, Gylfie's first partner. Gylfie is my great owl love and I hope she lives a long time and has lots of owlets. She has found a nice, funny partner in Dryer. I also love the owlets' hunting and flying exercises. It looks so funny, but for the little ones it is serious and vital. Not only Gylfie and Dryer did a fantastic job, but also you, REF, with this video. Thank you very much for that.

The first time I saw a barnowl in real i thought it was a snowowl. I hadn't seen a snowowl before, but the barnowl has such a vivid, vibrationed feathercoat, with those glimmering spots in it, like diamonds almost, that I thought, this must be a snowowl. (Later on, working for the animal-ambulance, I saw what a difference there is between the two, ofcourse).

One of the things that I loved watching, was how Dryer grew more and more into his role as a father. In real time watching many of the milestones, with each owl was beautiful. Cloud would scream when Thunder & Storm were at the entrance. But she did get up in the entrance very young. I loved when Dryer would sit across from Elm on his favorite branch, just watching the weather owls, before hunting. Thunder sharing food with his sisters was so cool, to watch live. Thunder was so independent and the best big brother. Then Storm & Cloud roosting together after fledging for a bit. Their bond was unique to watch too. I can’t help but tear up. I adore owls. These BO siblings were my first to follow on your channel. I have watched many of your videos. So I knew about Finn. I usually keep tissues near by when watching just in case. Not because of only sadness either. The happy moments too, can tear me up just as much. Dryer & Gylfie make a great team/pair. Dryer has definitely grown even more into his role as a father. That story to come. ;)

Fantastic video! So glad to see Gylfie return and prove how fantastic of a mom she is yet again. And while Dryer might be an adorable bit oblivious, I think he got the spirit. Everything else Gylfie has proven able to handle.

Robert, I greatly appreciate your videos. Thank you for what you do for the animals! Do the parent owls remove the pellets made by the young? I have seen pellets before in your videos, but the nests look so clean compared to some other videos I have seen. Do young owls make pellets with even their first meals? Do the parents remove any other waste from the nest? Thank you for your time if you are able to answer!

The parents do not remove pellets from the nest. In fact barn owl nests become very filthy indeed.

Glyfie is such a great mum I appreciate her so much she does so much to provide and even helped Dryer step up his game Dryer and Glyfie raised powerful broods together Dryer had a shaky start but he’s a super dad and absolutely incredible, very attentive I’m happy they’re together😊
