    @@darkfury24 No, nothing. The other FEMALES will often hump an in-heat cage mate. SO WEIRD!!! My male passed living to 3 1/2 years. Right now I have two spayed females and two intact females. Their estrus period side effects are barely noticeable. Daisy's in-heat side effects used to be crippling. She would go insane. We spayed her, and she is such a wonderful happy rattie now

    i used to own females (11 total, over the span of 4 years) and i now own 2 males, so here's my perspective: boys are more cuddly and are more bonded to their human, but are way more stinky then girls. seriously, they have way more cage space compared to what my girls had but they stink it up way more then the girl ever did. i think there isn't that big of a difference in how hyper they are, i think that's more of an individual rat thing (but maybe that's because my boy Buffy has energy for hours). mammary tumors are a big reason i didn't want to own girls anymore. 6 of my girls had them. we didn't get them removed because they were already old and the chance that it comes back is big so my mom didn't allow it. they can live with them for a while, but eventually they get too big for the rat to have a quality live and we did the responsible thing of putting them to sleep. note: most of my rats were rescues and i assume they were probably originally pet store rats, so that might have contributed to them getting tumors. i'm scared i might have to deal with a male rat with hormonal aggression, but i will get him neutered of course (with my mom's permission). i had a female with hormonal aggression once, but we didn't get her spayed because we didn't know what it was back them. i don't know which i prefer yet, but i do know that my boys are two of my favourite rats i've ever had. all rats are great though.

    If you spay them you decrease the likelihood of getting tumors at a later age by a factor of 10. It's easier to get it done early in their life instead of having to pay for tumor surgery later in life. And it's probably cheaper in the long run

    Everyone is different. Personally, I’ve always wanted male rats. They’re lazier, more snuggly, and they just sort of fit my personality. I went to a pet store to get two rats and all they had were females. One of the employees brought out a black and white girl and she was the sweetest thing ever!! I took home two sweet girls that day and I couldn’t be happier. I named them Martha and Eleanor. I love them!! And the closest breeder to me is about seven hours. That’s the only reason why I got them from a pet store. Rats aren’t popular pets in my country, so finding a good breeder that’s close to me is very difficult. I did try to rescue some and there weren’t any rat rescues near me even if I checked the shelters and wildlife sanctuaries. Trust me, I hate buying from pet shops but it’s my only option.

    I have 6 males at the moment and am very happy with choosing to have them instead of girls. I must say, I was leaning toward girls at first, because I was intimidated by the sheer size of b a l l s on males and found it kind of disturbing, but I'm well past that and actually consider them strangely cute lol On a more serious note, my main concern with girls was them being hyper and... mammary tumors. I know boys are not immune to cancer, but from what I've seen, girls seem to get tumors a lot more often. I don't have a reliable vet that can neuter and spay rats in my area so I just wouldn't be able to provide them that to lessen the chances. Thus, boys it is. I love my stinky ballsack potatoes to the moon and back

    Experience with my rats, All of my girls are very affectionate and will come when called without a treat to tempt them. They don't sit still for long, but when they do settle down they will cuddle. They love interacting with me and giving kisses. My boys are calmer, but just about the same affection wise. I do not like rat balls.. why are they that big. My babies don't need those absolute honkers. On tumors, spayed girls are 70% less prone to mammary tumors compared to not spayed girls. I had a rat that was clearly inbred and had aggression in her lines, she developed one of these tumors. Generally they will appear around 6mo to death, so do keep an eye out.

    I totally agree on the rat balls part... (never thought I'd say that sentence) Probably the only thing I don't like about males. Fyi: I don't actually have rats but have been doing a lot of research on them the last couple of months and do plan on getting them in a few years time (when/if circumstances are better). Edit: a rescue near me also has spayed female rats so that's an option too. Perhaps I will get both males and spayed females.

    When I had separate males and females (a rehomed pair), during the boys free roaming time Monty would ALWAYS clamber up and up and up to the female cage stick his nose up to the grill, get bitten on the nose or paw, Yelp in surprise (again) and bounce down to the floor (about a one foot drop, I wasn’t worried about that). He was the only one who did this, the other boys all ignored the other cage, and the girls ignored the boys during their free roaming. It was like the balcony scene in Romeo & Juliet, if it ended with an indignant squeak and a gentle thump.

  • @Emiology

    @Emiology

    Yep, my boys do that when they're in separate parts of the cage before introductions and it makes the whole thing not enjoyable for me, having to constantly pull them off the cage and stop them from being bitten, they don't end up making the most of their free roam and I could not be bothered having to do that constantly with a second cage of very interesting smelling girls.

    @@TheDg403 Honestly, if it wasn’t that the females needed rescuing as they were very grumpy with everyone just through lack of interaction with their previous owners, I would have only had males like Emi has chosen to have. You will either have two groups to manage/exercise/play with, or have to get them neutered/spayed and then have the whole “introducing two groups of rats together” to go through to try to make them one group. And they will be very curious about the other group, possibly defensive, possibly just horny but I can’t see them interacting well when still two groups and still sexually active, sorry.

    I did work at a pet store, and I can say that not all pet stores are bad, though, I do agree that you should not trust just any store. It is common for the conditions to not be great for the animals in pet stores. Luckily, we found reputable breeders that we bought our animals from and we bred some of our own rats, rabbits. hamsters, and mice. We would also sell the animals that we bred to customers that we believed would offer them a good home. One of our rabbits was able to find a home on a farm with a former employee. We had many mice and rats. Sadly, some were sold as feeders, but we played with them in the back and gave them plenty of space to play. I, as well as other employees, ended up falling in love with many of the rats. I grew especially attached to one rat specifically and ended up taking him home with me. Before working here, I never thought to have a rat as a pet, but gosh, they are such sweet pets with such varied personalities. Also, compared to some other animals we had, they tend to be a bit cleaner, which surprised me. We had one store rat named sneezy, and everyone loved to take him out and play with him. We would also provide them with cardboard to play with, little homes, and toys that we took the stuffing out of. Loved the baby rats that would curl up in the toys. Our store would also cut up fresh fruit and vegetables for the rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, turtles, rats, chinchillas, and mice. It was always enjoyable handing them the fruit and vegetables. The rats, rabbits, chinchillas, and guinea pigs would run up to us and grab it from us (some of the rats would with their paws). The mice were sweet but rats were definitely easier to socialize than the mice for me. I would usually pull a few rats out on my lunch break and after work, and we had others that would do the same with the hamsters or mice. There were some hamsters that were not good mothers and we had to keep an eye on them. We kept some hamsters with water bowls and others with bottles. I definitely prefer the bottles for them, but it really depended on if they could figure out how or wanted to use the water bottle. When some of the hamsters had litters, some would walk away from their baby and not nourish them well enough and we had one every now and then that would try to drop a baby in the water bowl. Luckily, we caught them quick enough to save the baby, but out of caution, we would have some baby hamsters mothered by recent rat mothers if their conditions with their mother seemed to not get any better. It was sad to have to take them from their mother, but we wanted to be sure that they would be well cared for and rats tend to make the best mothers, in my opinion. We definitely monitored the rats with the hamsters, but every hamster litter that we had to transfer did great with their rat mother. I do miss working there, but the employees I worked with are great and I'm sure the animals are in great hands. I definitely know that pet stores may not be the best place to get animals, but I am happy that I was able to contribute to a pet store where we did our best to make a happy life for our animals while they were with us.

    @@soph4850 I agree so much with the Guinea pig thing. I’ve only ever owned females but some of my friends had boys and I just never enjoyed them as much. Their balls just start to stink and they would never do anything when taken out of the cage, just sit still. For people who love cuddling their animals this could be good, but again, their privates would be so stinky and often would leave the area they were sitting on to be wet and stinky. My girls are so funny and energetic, and my first ever Guinea pig had such a bond with me where she would sit with me and follow me around as well as respond to her name. I also have female hamsters, and I don’t love the extreme high energy and destructiveness of Syrians, but my female hybrid dwarf hamsters have all been super sweet. Their behavior also got so much better after I discovered proper care as an adult (thanks Victoria Raechel!)

I've just got 3 boys, 8 weeks old, very hyper!! 🤣 I'd love to free roam on my landing like you are, but I'm terrified that they will go through the gaps in the bannister and fall?! Or just run away down the stairs while I frantically scramble to gather them! And also, do you find them peeing on your landing carpet a problem? Mine pee everywhere, and while it would be ok for a one off, I suspect not a good place to free roam long term? I don't have many options in my small house. Any tips etc would be most welcome 🙏 x

  • @Emiology

    @Emiology

    3 жыл бұрын

    It depends where they get them from. Local pet stores can purchase their rats from mills or backyard breeders (as no responsible breeder would want their rats in a pet store and don’t need them to be) and as much work as they can put in handling them they’re likely not bred for good health long term or temperament so it’s a bit of a lottery as to what you’ll get.
