A tip when building railroad tracks: If there's a bunch of fills or cuts or bridges or tunnels in a proposed stretch of track that you've placed, then before actually paying for it, try hitting the "n" and "m" keys. This will lower/raise the midpoint of the track, and can really reduce the expensive land-moving/bridge-building/tunnel-digging. Just make sure not to make huge hills. This is especially helpful since bridges and tunnels cost extra maintenance over regular track, so turning a tunnel into a cut is cheaper both in the short- and long-term. Actually this can help on any section; I just did it on a stretch of track on relatively level ground and it dropped the price from 600k to 200k.

Transport Fever 2 signals don't use the block signal system, they use the path signal system. When a train wants to continue, it looks only on the path until the next signal or station (the one shown in the line manager), and if the path is clear then it goes, even if the traditional block would be occupied. Therefore, there's no need for "release signals" right after a split. Great video otherwise!

  • @temper6554

    @temper6554

Yep, this actually hurts your network as a train can get stuck on the contested track. Remove the first signal so your track keeps flowing.

Yes it is called path signalling and is how most modern signalling systems based on track circuits work this is because the points/switch also act as the electrical switch determining which distant signal energises the track circuit. The reason for the change with modern signalling systems is that it means the signals don't need to keep track of a separate bypass circuit running parallel to the shared track and connecting to the diverging track. Track circuits would need to do that due to how they work the opposite would have been true for manual signalling which is why the less efficient absolute block signalling was used as back then as there was no way to detect trains inside the block you could only observe trains entering and leaving at the ends of the block as that is where the signallers in the signal boxes could see them. Well technically you could detect them in the middle but that would require a bunch of intermediate observer boxes and staff to fill them which would have been insanely expensive. Cheaper to just lock or tag the signal lever when a train is seen entering and wait for the telegraph signal from one of the signal boxes on the other end to report the train clear but it comes at the cost of losing use of the entirety of both tracks for the duration so when tech to detect presence of trains anywhere on the active running line to the next signal was invented allowing more efficient route based block assignment it was preferred.

Its might be a bit more expensive but across the river to your left they are two more oil wells you can tie into the set up. So instead of editing the line you have you could always take a bridge across the river, the expensive part, and then build a station tying in the other oil to make up the difference on ratio, just have it running oil back and forth and leave the rest doing the current route.

  • @spyone4828

You can even start using those wells with a truck line, so all you are paying for is the trucks and the truck stops. Once it has made you some money, consider building a bridge and using trains.

  • @astrosteve

Such an informative video! I have almost 100 hours in it and didn't know a lot of stuff in this video. (eg, I'd somehow never clicked on the button that let you control what loads and unloads and had no idea it existed. I always have the problem with goods being mixed up at stops that have multiple goods coming in on different lines and thought there was no way to fix it and you just had to put up with it.) I'd also never been able to get passing loops working correctly and always double tracked from the very start and now I see what I was doing wrong. These videos are useful even for experienced players, which is great! I would also like to add: I see it as beneficial in the right circumstances to cap the speed of an engine by using slower tanks. If you keep them from running at full speed, they can take hills while losing minimal speed, sometimes they don't slow down at all when a locomotive going full speed would slow down so the speed capped train will get through the route faster, despite having the same max speed as the slower train. This, of course, would not apply on a flat (or nearly flat) track. Your track seems to be fairly flat, so it may not apply in this case, though. Also, it's so short the slightly shortened travelling time probably makes so little difference as to not be worth it, but it can be worth it for longer, hilly lines in my experience.

Squirrel you don't need a signal at the start of a block. as long as you have one at the end, the waiting train will be able to go as soon as the other train is on the other track. by having one at the start you could end up having the train waiting for a clear track while still being on a two way stretch of track which will then block the trains coming the other way

    1. You don't need to be worried about products like crude being overproduced, you don't pay anything for it any way. 2. The moment a product is delivered somewhere it the transport is paid, so it doesn't matter financially to the player if a line is not perfectly balanced in product chains. 3. You don't need to split the crude oil line, just add two more stops: crude -> oil-ref (don't pickup refined) -> crude -> oil-ref (pickup refined) -> fuel ref = profit without any more trains. (works for any chains)

I have found that rather than replace the vehicles , if you put the maintance up to very high (50%)for a short time they will go back to very good instead of very bad. You then put the maintance back to normal they will slowly degrade again. I think it costs less than replacing them but you have to watch the charts to change them again otherwise it will cost a fortune to run them on (50%) and they will start making a loss on the run they are doing. Great game.. love it.

I think you only want signals on the exits to the loop. If you put it on the entry and you have bad luck, you'll end up with a situation where a train is waiting to leave and can't because it's blocked by a train waiting to enter the loop but can't because it's also blocked by a train waiting to leave the loop at the other end. If it's anything like train fever or transport fever 1, the signal will go green as soon as the track is clear. So only put one way signals on exits to loops.

Hi Squirrel. I think splitting the lines is a good idea .. the train carrying the crude can bring back the fuel , the other side is carrying oil to the refinery and bring fuel back .. 3 out of the 4 trips will be getting paid for their journey .. about as efficient as you can get with that set up.

  • @spyone4828

You can also do kind of a hybrid split line: One line just takes crude to the refinery and come back empty, one takes crude to the refinery then takes oil to the fuel plant and returns full of fuel. The second line would need slightly more trains to account for having further to go. I think a train on the first line can make two trips for every one on the second.

Hi Squirrel, Regarding this episode: Wasn't there an Option where you can Have a combined Cargo + Passenger station? (You can add a Cargo Rail/Stop off to the side of a Passenger station for example) Might be wrong, or using a mod, But I'm curious 😅. Love the Video 🍻

2 crude => 1 oil ...So does that mean that the trucks were inefficient as well, and costs could have been reduced by splitting the truck line as well?

Just a game tip but never place signals where a train could be forced to stop on a switching track. It will ruin the whole line.

I'm having a problem with cargo train, it doesn't take fuel to loughton. I've done exactly what you show and still I've nothing on cargo train station.

I recently found your videos for Transport Fever 2 and I'm just playing this map, trying to make use of your video. I've setup the same crude, oil and fuel rail like you. At the moment just single track with one train. I seem to have a problem with my fuel production. Crude is loaded and brought to the oil refinery, there oil is loaded, brought and unloaded at the fuel production. Unfortunately there seems to be no production, the oil disappears but no fuel is put to the station (it doesn't show the fuel icon). Any ideas? The station is connected to the plant, my only concern is that the way to the city needing fuel is much shorter by road but that was the same in your video.

My fuel factory has no customers, I guess that's the reason why it's not producing anything. Meanwhile I built another track , thought that it might be caused by the full terminal at the crude oil station - where the fuel should be unloaded as well. Without success...

@squirrel can't you use the oil thw other side of water and add a track to that which will put 2 oil into the one refinery

Soo, the traffic has to yield to the train, but you crossed your truck lines multiple times with the track? Wont that cause big delays? Also, I feel like you built a loop to deliver crude to your fuel customers?... did I get that wrong?

Imagine if you needed to build fuel stops for your vehicles, and buy/produce the fuel to refuel them

I disagree that splitting this particular oil route would be more efficient; the current system allows the trains to maintain speed through the crude refinery station when hauling fuel, whereas splitting the line would cause them to needlessly stop there and transfer cargo. What would increase profits would be to add an ancillary crude line so the latter legs run full instead of at 1/2 capacity.

Yes, but the roads are right side drive only. The train can run either with one-way signals, which is why you'll find left side sigs in the workshop ;-)
