@@Hushey it is a german rail road legend. So, there is kinda bias, that she was included in the game i guess. And die BR 103 was also in every Train / Transport Fever game so far, because, even the developers arent german, they are german speaking and also the german market was a focus perhaps. But her performance, is just, what she was capable of. That is also the reason, why she was in her time, the flagship for the DB and had near monolpoly for fast trains here. I'm german and i remember for example, when i was a child, that i went with my grandmother to the main station, just to watch trains and especially the BR 103, i also had her as a H0 Model on my layout.

The power rating of a locomitive influences how fast it reaches top speed after getting moving, while the tractive effort is a measure of standstill acceleration or uphill performance. Many of the fast trains would just absolutely lose on a gradient track because of these differences and the results would almost inverse

Great video 👌🏻. Would you be able to do a comparison between expensive single locomotives pulling some carriages, vs cheaper dual locomotives pulling the same carriages? (Similar total cost.) I mean, you've already built an amazing test track! 😀 It'd be interesting to see what's better value for money. Another idea, which would be more time consuming to implement, would be to repeat the test in this video, but having the track have an incline/decline. A lot of routes aren't necessarily flat, and it'd be cool to see the results with these conditions. Keep up the good work 👍🏻.

@@Hushey Yea.. that is somewhat reasonable in a full out test.. i do get why you did it.. but i really think that with period cars it would be different. Also, really back in the 1850 the trains would not be running that long. The concept of having a 16 or 400meter train is really a very new one. The DB Class 103 was probobly the first loco designed to handle full length passenger trains. Prior to that there is like S1 and T1 in the US that was designed to pull 1000 ton passenger train, but that is still like only 10-12 (full length) cars. Going back to the inter war period. full length passenger cars was still not that common and 2 and 3 axles was still the most common variants. Of cause the six-axle did exist, but it was far to heavy for region service, and really only for long haul transports. Something very expensive like the orient express used standard length cars already in the late 1800, but not the full train, mostly the dining and some sleeping cars (like the first class) most of the other, like sitting and second class sleeping class was still on tri axel cars, really all the way until the 1930-tys Also the Orient express trains was really not that long If i would just guesstemate it from 1970 onwards was 400 meter trains sort of the norm. (this is what most the stations and systems are built for) System like Shrinkage and TGV was built for 400 meter from the get go. From 1930 to 1970 250 meter was probobly the longest passenger train you could find (of cause, freight still being longer) Prior to that i would say typically 150 meter or so. And we going back to Rainhill, they was doing only 80 meter long trains, and that was then pretty much the edge.

Like you said, I don't use HS trains for regional transport (especially 'suburban' lines) only, on lines overarching the entire megalomaniac map. Although I read it somewhere, that ticket price is partially calculated including the theoretical top speed of the trains. Now, does that mean if I run a 300km/h train on a local service, it provides me with a higher income/passenger, despite never going anywhere near as fast as a proper local train? Or does the game use the insanely high running costs to discourage me from using HS trains? Once I did a quick research on the topic: I used to run regular loco+carriage trains with 'excellent' acc on a curvy mountain two track mainline. It was good enough but then I replaced them with HSTs with a little bit less passenger capacity and about the same running costs. What I found is that although the trains were not nearly as fast (definitely not faster) than the ones before, the profit still increased on a recogniseable scale. Also what grinds my gears is whether skipping stops on a long route (like a real life IC train) makes it more likely for passengers to find further destinations than not skipping. I also found controversial info on that too. Like if I have a train that stops at, say, 7 stations along the way, is it 'worse', from a passenger's perspective, than a train which stops only once the length of the route? It is very dificult to test, but is there anyone who has tried it before and has some results?

Well, having multiple units pull stuff doesn't really make sense unless they were designed for it. Especially the railbus which was designed to go alone or haul one or two carriages. The "crocodile" Ce 6/8 II was one of the first electric locomotives of Switzerland. Its top speed is only 65 km/h and it's highest power output is at a rather slow 40 km/h. The SLM-Schrägstangenantrieb (the rods you see on the side) isn't really good for high speeds because of its physics. This locomotive was built for goods traffic on the Gotthard main line, so it's good to pull heavy trains uphill. It has lots of power but isn't fast, definitely has its uses, just not fun to haul trains across the Swiss lowlands.

They were used for this in real life too for some time.

The european trains typically have both more power and speed than the us...what they typicallt lack is traction and in real life.. range. The us locos had to be built wirh very long range. That limit there power and speed to a degree. While this is mostly just true fore stean trains. Diesel and electric trains use the same infrastructure hence the same weknesses.

The BR 103 is not bias and as I was a child I were going to holiday with my Mother and we go with the train and the lokomotiv of the train was a BR103 and I can say it is a really fast and strong lokomotiv. The Devs are form Germany and also greetings from Germany. And really a big F for the Railbus.

The devs are from Switzerland..... But it is not faulty, that the 103 is so strong. It was used bei Deutsche Bahn for trains up to 14 Passeanger-Coaches and was able to reach in travellig-speed of 200 km/h very very quick. The loco was powerfull enough to haul heavy freight trains in the night and was even used for local trains, which needed a high acceleration (even if this was a problem for the loco later, it caused damage). She had power to go way more than 200 km/h, but germany lacked the lines for more than that. The acceleration of the 103 was far better than the accelaration of most modern electric locos today. To be fair in Transport Fever 1 & 2 the acceleration pf the bullet trains is worse than in reality. I don't know for the Shinkansen, but the ICE and the TGV are accelerating much faster in reality - here Urban Game messed up...

Very nice video! Funny and entertaining. But please, PLEASE, mate, stop calling locomotives trains. A train is a set of rail vehicles pulled by a LOCOMOTIVE. While a locomotive is just the vehicle pulling the train. Or you can just call it a "loco" if you find it easier. I see a lot of americans making this mistake and it urks me. Anyway, nice race track you built there. Ironically, some of the early electric locos are worse than the latest steamers, and, lets face it, who wants and electric loco that does less than 100 kph? As for the diesel ones, i just used them in my play for diversity, i do not find them that much better than the latest steamers. The BR 103 is a powerful and fast loco, but it is VERY expensive and only worth using on long distance express trains or very LONG freight trains. But mostly i preferred to use cheaper electric locos for freighters. Definitely not worth using as an inter-city passenger train if the distances between cities are not too long. It will only start to break even, financially, from 8 cars + on an inter-city line.
