Annihilating the LAND SPEED RECORD in Kerbal Space Program 2!

Ойындар

Kerbal Space Program 2 is finally here, and I got an early look at Kerbal Space Program 2 gameplay as I reclaim the land speed record and hopefully embarrass @InternDotGif and @Blitz for calling me an architect in their videos! It was harder than expected, but nothing the UK Speed Agency can't solve!

@6:14 by elevating the flaps, the air is flowing over the wing and then hitting the flap pushing it down, this would usually make the plane fly as an equal and opposite force, but because you have flaps before and after the centre of mass it is effectively just pushing your centre of mass into the ground, which is what you want, it's counter intuitive but it makes sense when you think about it

  • @zorco8768

Try angling the wings very slightly down (leading edge lower than the trailing edge; think how spoilers on ridiculous 1980s sports cars were angled), and you'll have some actual downforce.

You could: Set the wings to a fixed angle so you keep getting downforce Use several unfilled tanks and make the com of the empty tanks align with the com of partly full tanks. Only fill it up so much that you run out of fuel by the end of the runway Lower the degree at which your wheels turn when you steer or even make some of them unable to steer. That might make steering at high speeds more convenient. Pick bigger, heavier wheels. You generate tons of downforce and possibly the wheels aren't designed for that much downforce(or speed). Maybe this is a step backwards, maybe forwards, but it is worth trying

Add a fuel tank and a vector to the back of it, then using symmetry mode 8 you can fit 4 rows of 24 Sepatrons (they are tiny radially-moibtes solid fuel boosters made to repel unused stages)... Then protect it somehow, I used a structural payload nosecone, and then drogue chutes to the back. Ez game

I think you can use SAS if you reduce the max angle of the control surfaces and the engine gimbal, cause you are doing coarse adjust with the default settings. The gimbal from this engine is 15° if it's the same as KSP 1 vector engine, limit that to 2 or 3° and the vessel will be more stable with SAS. Maybe you can reach 1300 m/s next time with it.

Btw, one of the credible KSP and KSP 2 channels suggested the reason for turning off the auto friction on the front wheels. That explanation went something like this; The auto friction on the front wheels essentially behaves like pulling a parking break at any considerable speed. It creates tremendous friction around a single point that is already very unstable. At least, that's how I remember it.

I don't know if your allowed to use certain glitches, but it technically works extremely well. Put a rapier engine on the front, facing backwards as if it were to slow you down. Add a nose cone, use the move tool to move it 2 notches away and bam! you have an insane engine that can get up to pretty high speeds. Tested a little plane and got to 1,815m/s on land.

You should use aeobrakes before deploying chutes (mains do deploy only under 250m/s and drogues I guess under 350 so you have to bleed of a lot speed first) Without areobrakes, you can use the deploy function on the wing control surfaces to deploy them like areobrakes, make sure the deploy towards the ground or you will be pushed upwards and dismantle.

I think you're onto something here with the wings. If you adjust the angle of the wings slightly so that they point more towards the ground, they should act like a spoiler on a car and give it the downforce you need and avoid the lift. You only need to angle them slightly. Too much of an angle it creates too much drag.

Matt - you want downforce, look at any F1 car in the last 50 years. Upside down wings front and rear. They do cause drag so only need be big enough to provide minimum downforce necessary. Modern F1 cars produce way more downforce than what's required to drive upside down. Also, as said below, air under the nose is what explosively ended your runs in explosions every time. The more air you divert from going under the nose, the faster you go without liftoff. Plenty of vids of street car top speed runs that end in high altitude backflip carnage.

Smaller wings. Disable engine gimble. Two wheels can work with good craft balance. 4 wheels is likely most ideal. It could also use a vertical stabilizer with flaps disabled and hotkeyed to deploy when you want to stop. Shouldn't need chutes at all. Worst case, reverse a solid rocket. Prolly can play with wing AoA to get just enough down force while maintaining high speed. I'd even disable steering on the landing gear. Pure reaction wheels. You can decrease friction on wheels for the run and max it out when finished. Edit: beyond this, just playing with craft weights and fuels. TWR is the most critical, obviously. You shouldn't need more than 30 seconds of burn.

I hit 20km/s at 20km high with this cool trick. Put a nose cone right behind the engines then use the move tool to move them 2 ticks out and you might want to limit your thrusters to 20% thrust because it might be to powerful for your vehicle and make sure the engines face the wrong way

in my humble opinion there need to be clear rules on how we count this. my suggestion is the following. 1. the run must be preformed at the flat area where the KSC runway is located. 2. the vehicle must not get airborne at any time. 3. the vehicle must come to a safe stop. 4. the vehicle is not allowed to shed parts. 5. the vehicle must be intact after it comes to a safe stop.
