TRACK BATTLE! Ford Focus RS vs Subaru WRX STI

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

When friends hand you the keys to their new Ford Focus RS and Subaru Impreza STI there's only one thing to do: TRACK BATTLE! We test both at the limit at Toronto Motorsports Park to determine which is fastest, and then NV Auto pro drifter Riley Sexsmith throws the Focus RS into Drift Mode and sees what kind of skids he can do.
Special thanks to NV Auto for putting this together, and to Julien for letting us rip on his shiny new STI. Bros don't let bros drive stock for long though, so you may just see a Part 2 to this battle once both cars are tuned up a bit.

    The reason why the car was pushing for you on power was because you left it in Auto DCCD mode. Subaru recommends Auto Minus for the track in the manual. When I rallycross, I use a fully open DCCD to help rotate the car on power. I really respect the Ford Focus RS though. It keeps Subaru on their toes.

    It's so refreshing to see an actual drifter use the drift mode properly. I've seen so many videos on You tube trying out the drift mode but nobody can drift. It would've been way better to see him drift it with harder compound tires as those cup 2 tires have way too much grip for drifting.

    N.V. Auto good review but having the the diff open in manual will send more power to the rear wheels sometimes giving nice oversteer the setting used here is for winter driving and everyday use. It's in the Subaru owners manual not to use it on track because of the understeer. Pretty much repeated what brain d said above 🙂

    The RS just looks so much more on it's toes than the STI. The prevailing cabin sound of the tires entire families being sent to the firing squad probably doesn't help the STI's case though.

    I cant for the life of me figure out why you would leave the sti diff in "auto". If you took the time to read the manual like you did for the RS, you would see subaru as clearly shown the car will understear and push wide in every corner if left in auto! I own a STI myself and the difference From auto to Auto"-" or the manual diff settings is night and day. Having the diff in auto [-] or fully opened in manual will cause much more power to be set to the rear wheels. Causing much better rotation and even some nice over steer. This makes your test completly USELESS! Do it again and see the difference. Auto mode is pretty much for winter driving or just normal driving around town.

    Hey Speed Academy. One feature on the sti that it apperas you missed is the trac mode for the traction control. Power levels will dip in loss off traction with this on, however the brake-based torque vectoring remains active. This helps the car stay more neutral in corners. p.s. I can tell that its not on, as you will have a green and yellow indicator in the bottom middle of the cluster

Amateurs putting cheap parts in their cars, shitty tunes or idiots running 87 octane. Obviously there are going to be far more reports for issues with the sti simply because it has been around so long. It is also a pedigree champion race horse, which cannot be denied. However, Ford and American cars in general have never been known for their reliability and resale value. Only time will tell with the rs, but my guess is it will not break the trend.

  • @TallLittleElf

    @TallLittleElf

    Here, let me explain in a little greater detail as to how I can see he lacks good driving skill. He jerks the steering wheel very fast and with lots of angle, which can cause part of the understeer he was experiencing. He also doesn't transition properly into immediate turns following the one he's exiting, he snaps the wheel back the other way. This does not give the car time to transition it's weight onto the other side. These mistakes he's making are something you'd expect from a novice.

    I've got a 2012 STi (hatchback) and I actually took the stock Dunlops off before they were worn out. Put some MIchelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 (yes, all-season) as "three season" tires to complement my winter tires and they were actually BETTER than the Dunlops, in spite of having double the treadwear ratng. TL;DR the stock Dunlops are poop. I was also really happy with the substantial torque curve change in a Cobb stage 1 tune, the only power mod I've made for the car. It drives very differently in spite of using the most conservative ("crappy gas") map. Curious how much the RS will 'wake up' for similar money. I'm also really happy with how my STi handles Edmonton winters. It feels unstoppable on ice, snow, etc, with a proper set of snow tires. Those mechanical diffs are something. The system in the RS is really interesting, and hopefully it holds up just as well... The brake fade was a bit alarming though!

    Why wasn't it possible to do the test with the same tires? Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of an accurate comparison? I mean tires make a HUGE difference on the track. I'm talking multiple seconds easily. I really like the RS and want one, but I'm not sold on it by this comparison. Comparing lap times of two cars with two different kinds of tires is simply inaccurate and biased to the car with better track tires.

  • @speedacademy

    @speedacademy

    7 жыл бұрын

    Why would we test the cars with the same tires? Every other stock car comparo channel (motortrend being the biggest) tests the cars as they arrive on the show room floor so it would defeat our test if we decided to change the tires.

  • @separator94

    Speed Academy Yeah, that's true. I just thought it would be more accurate as far as showing each cars potential and how they compare to each other as machines by having them both on even footing. I mean how do we know which car performs better if they're not on an even playing field? I am a big fan of you guys though. Love your videos.

    exactly, not to mention nobody drives like this on the road... like I give a flying F if one car was a second faster around a track after 2 laps, lol..that could be driver error as well -- truthfully though why anybody would want an AWD car with summer sports on them is beyond me. The point of AWD is to drive in all sorts of weather, and terrain, you know... the reason it was created. The first thing I would do if I bought (or leased) either car, would be to put some practical all season tires that had some performance grip. I had pure summer tires on my A4 a few years back and got hit with some early season snow and the difference in 3 inches of snow was night and day. Still "driveable" but no where near as reassuring as a good all season.

  • @separator94

    @separator94

    7 жыл бұрын

    Bodhi Safa Yeah, that's true but once AWD cars started to win the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and dominate rally racing they became a whole new breed of performance car. Now even the fastest super, and even hyper cars, are AWD. The Porsche 918, Lamborghini Aventador SV and McLaren P1 are the three fastest production cars in the world right now and are all AWD.

  • @Evolution10X

    @Evolution10X

    separator94 that's because they launch better, keeping the power to all 4 wheels and avoiding slippage but let's be real here you aren't going to see any of those cars driving around your neighborhood. We are talking about a 35k to 40K car here. I don't need track tires on my focus or WRX. That's pointless unless you live in state where it's always dry.

    Nice review. I'm lucky enough to own a 2016 Subaru STI special edition and a 2014 Ford Focus ST (not the RS. It wasn't available then). I like to think this gives me some experience to comment on this review. Both are really fun cars with Manual Transmissions! I don't buy automatics, flappy paddles, or CVTs. First, it was painful to watch the driver grind the Subaru STI over it's front tires like that. The STI is famous for its adjustable center differential, but the reviewer doesn't use it!? Set the CDiff to minus one to the rear. Then carve turns like a pro. The STI is our family car and is great. A big Thank You to Ford for making the Focus RS, now that the excellent Mitsubishi Evo 10 (my previous car) is no longer available. I really like my Ford Focus ST. It is quick, smooth, handles great but is a tight fit for people and any luggage. The Focus RS must be even more fun than the ST since it has more power and AWD. Unfortunately it is still pretty small inside. And the seating position is just too high to really feel connected to the car. The Focus ST still handles great but the high, and very upright, seating position isn't sports car, it's economy car. Can't decide, get one of each! Long live the hot sport compact car!

    You don't know RS sales. RS holds it's value far better than any Subaru. Even 1996 Escort RS models go for $30k and Focus RS models are always twice the price of used Subarus. Right now in the trader a 2009 Focus RS is 24K euro and a 2010 sti is 15k euros. People are willing to pay more for an RS than a STI every time hence why dealers mark them up and you can get deals on STI's.

STI sales in the UK are less than that of the Focus RS and so is more rare but loses value much quicker. The RS badge is valuable and collector worthy.
