It seems to have been around forever, but Toyota's Aygo is still one of the smartest used citycar buys. We're concentrating here on the last of the first generation models, built between 2012 and 2014. If you're in the market for a small and inexpensive runabout but don't want something unsafe, unreliable or unattractive, the Aygo makes a seriously strong case for your custom.
If you had to bet who Toyota would partner up with to bring a citycar to market, Peugeot and Citroen might not have been at the top of your list. Still, the tie-up has worked a treat, with the Toyota Aygo racking up some huge global sales; certainly more in total terms than the Citroen C1 and the Peugeot 107. The partnership was such a success that in 2014, the three companies renewed the deal with a trio of brand new city cars.
By that time, the Aygo had been on sale since 2005. If the usual city car life span had been observed, it would have been replaced sometime around 2011, when the Volkswagen Group launched a new offensive in this market with the VW up!, the Skoda Citigo and the SEAT Mii. Toyota was forced to respond to this triple threat which looked set to sink the Aygo without trace and in 2012, the Aygo was subtly restyled and efficiency was also improved. Toyota followed this up with Fire and Ice editions that helped slow the Aygo's declining sales before being replaced by an all-new car in 2014.

Another car and driving review, smooth professional and as comprehensive as you could want. I personally prefer small cars, but here in NZ large SUVs are becoming ever more numerous, as are large utes. Thank you again, your reviews are consistently top notch, and very nicely presented and filmed in beautiful English settings. My own Nissan cube Z12 continues to be a delight to own and drive. Keep them reviews coming!.

Bought the Citroen version for my wife after a disastrous Mercedes A class, car was meant to be with us for 2 years max so we could save for a better car. Now we’ve had it for almost 9 years, use it as my daily for work.

10 years ago our used Renault Megane broke down so we bought a C1 from new thinking will just sell it on after a couple of years. We did bought a larger second car but ended up still driving the C1 everyday. 10 years on it has no rust, no problem and I keep discovering little surprises from this awesome little Toyota engine, including it being capable of reaching 110mph!

@@adamek9750 can't remember exactly but 3rd gear should be able to bring you up to 75 before reaching 6000rpm, then 4th can take you to 95mph without too much problem. If conditions are good you should be able to reach 100 and up. 4000-5000 gives you the best power and then starting to sap after 5000. Don't bother with 5th as it's for cruising at 70mph and will drain your top speed. Use quality fuel not supermarket ones. I found BP fuel works best with the little engine.

@@adamek9750 sorry scrap the 3rd gear reaching 75. It's been a while so I couldn't remember exactly but today I had a chance to get onto motorway and it's actually 3rd gear for 90mph. Once you are on 4th it will struggle so stay on 3rd as long as you can before reaching 90mph if you are aiming for top speed.

I bought a well-maintained 2013 model recently and it leaks everywhere when it rains. Gear linkage feels flimsy, like it's been made from wire coathangers. Indicator stalk has stopped working properly. Definitely not manufactured to Toyota's usual high standards. It does drive well in the city though.

Used to love my 107. Ran into fuel theft, then some fuel pump issues, long story short I switched to a Ford Fiesta. More stable car and less noise on the highway. Can't match the fuel economy unfortunately.
