Toyota AE86 - How Many Did They Make? (And A Brief History) | Juicebox Unboxed #62
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
How many AE86 's did Toyota produced worldwide? A question we try to answer in this video. This episode started because two of our Truenos were 40 cars between each other on the assembly line in 1987 and now they live in the same shed. We also uncover some rare photos and interviews with the head designers and engineers on the AE86 chassis.

I just realised, building the export models in the Aichi prefecture makes sense, as Nagoya has a large port and would make exporting quicker instead of the Shizuoka plant, which is not on the coast line. This video is such a win and I rewatch it from time to time. I remember driving with my AE86 next to its plant in Shizuoka, when I bought it in Japan.
from this i worked out my car rolled of the line on the 18th of December 1986 and if production was 24/7 it was 2:20 in the morning and was the 14th car made that day
I’m a 45 year old married man with a kid . I’m probably the last guy your KZread channel is aimed at , but I love the channel. I was there through the 00s when these cars were everywhere. I had an evo 6 , a 02 Sti Impreza and a 04 sti spec c . God this stuff brings back great memories
I think more then half of US ae86 are current here in Puerto Rico. My mom's first car was a manual ae86, she didnt have it for long considering my dad got his hands on it on one day she went on a trip and wrapped it around a tree.
I hope this video will become the go to ae86 reference video. I’ve seen so much wrong information and bullshit in general posted over the years. This video is a breath of fresh air.
One of my new favorite videos of all time now. I adore the 86, and shitboxes in general, it's a dream car of mine, and learning more of this little warrior makes me want one even more. Amazing work!
I’m glad you call the SR5s and GTS’ an AE86, in which they are. The Initial D kids and a few Aussies like to complain that they’re AE85s (which we’re never sold in the USA) and the AE88 (which is just to tell the owner it’s a GTS car) but it’s always nice to see someone so reputable get the information correct.

Randall A That my friend is a AE86 DX, not a GTS. All USA cars are AE86s, stamped on the firewall. You have a DX SR5, which is a base model SR5.

They don't come out much these days. Most are weekend warriors,or track cars now, very few are still daily driven. I've owned four ADM-spec AE86's over the years myself. There are still plenty around, you just won't see them on a daily basis.

The last time I saw an AE86 was two-three years ago. I'm not even sure if It was an actual AE86 because the AE85 look similiar because of the fixed headlights. I live in Bulgaria and I was in Razgrad with my family just to buy something from the supermarkets. As I was walking down the street I've stumbled upon on that car. It was blue in color, but it was riced out. Big spoiler, big bumpers and tinted windows. Sadly I forgot to take a picture of it. I think there're around 10 registered AE86's or AE85's in my country. Mostly used for track racing.
This was absolutely ace man. Appreciate all your hard work and passion.

The 4A-GE was basically a Japanese clone of the fabled Cosworth BDA engine from the Ford Escort. Check out the bore and stroke figures.

The valve sizes are the same also, and the port sizes are very similar as well IIRC. With them both being 1.6L performance engines though, that's to be expected. The laws of physics don't change because they're being written in Japanese instead of English. Is an SR20 a copy of a 4G63,or the FA20 a copy of both of the others because they all have the same bore and stroke when they're all 2L engines?
I've done a dip in that rabbit hole. But man... You really dove deep in there! Learnt a lot of new stuff today! Tanks!

very very very interesting video guys, a pleasure to watch and awesome research job!
I own a USDM SR5 Corolla and luckily a lot of the original paperwork came with the car. It's a 1986 model-year vehicle, and was apparently delivered the the Toyota dealership for the original owner in January of '86. This means that it undoubtedly had to be built in late '85. The table from the Russian site supports this, because my AE86's serial number lands in the December numbers for the A-Plant. Cool stuff, thanks for the incredible work you do!
I really enjoyed your thesis!

Great Video Neil!! Our Australian-spec AE86 was built in May of '83,and has a frame number of 00000453,so it was made towards the end of the first month of overall AE86/AE85 production at Tahara, A52. Australian compliance was done in June of 1983 also,so it got shipped over here pretty quickly as well!
