Touring Northern Spain by Rail - Llanes to Ribadesella

Part 4 -- Llanes to Ribadesella -- More uninterrupted views of the line ahead. This is the final part of a series of four. Our train passes through a succession of pretty coastal towns and villages with occasional glimpses of sandy beaches. The low clouds and ever-present mountains create a dramatic sky line for our train to race towards.

Your train videos are the best, in large part because you let us SEE everything without cuts. Just wish you'd do the same for ears as for eyes. The sound of the rails, train whistles and other trip sounds only. We can supply our own background music if we like. Again, yours are the best. Oh, I'm living in Llanes.

Thanks a lot. Brings back memories of touring northern Spain by the old main road, which runs almost parallel to the FEVE. I'd forgotten about that village called Poo! Thanks also for the excellent, unobtrusive music.

A very interesting trip. Enjoyed all 4 parts. You once again have amazed me with your travels. Thanks to the quick thinking of the train driver to push emergency stop to stop the train when car was on the track saved another life. Its a shame the driver didn't seem to look first before crossing. Awesome breaks to stop the train. Good thing the train wasn't going any faster then you all was. Thanks for sharing your trips with us. Safe travels ahead. God bless.

Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed all four parts. Northern Spain is very picturesque and unspoiled by mass tourism. The drivers have to be very alert as there are a number of unguarded crossings, fortunately the trains are capable of stopping in a surprisingly short distance and motorists are usually a lot more careful.

I too was glad to see the train driver was so alert. The situation instantly put me in mind of that video where an Amtrak train in the USA smashed into a car at a crossing at full speed. The train driver had no warning at all as the car driver went around an already stopped vehicle at high speed to cross the tracks and there were trees obstructing the train driver's view of the approach to the crossing. All 5 people on board the car died just because the driver was too impatient to wait for the train. I'm so glad that didn't happen here.

Hi, glad you enjoyed it, the driver and guard were have a good old chin wag in Spanish. I had no idea what they were saying and as they'd been kind enough to allow my camera in the cab, I felt it was only fair not to broadcast their private conversation to the world, hence the music.

Brilliant video. I noticed that when you arrived to Llanes you were told to change of train. I am from the north of Spain and I am in love with trains. The train you took until Llanes is a 2400 or Apolo, and it is quite old, even though they have just improved them a bit. However, the one in this video is a 2700 which is very modern but is causing a lot of problems nowadays. I hope you return some day and record the train from Santander to Bilbao

Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. The FEVE railway along the coast passes through pretty villages and pleasant unspoiled countryside. I arrived at Santander by ferry from Portsmouth, England. Northern Spain is beautiful and the FEVE is great way to visit the towns and villages along the way. I intend to return one day to ride the train to Bilbao.

Pedro Nesich This railway connects the Santander to Portsmouth ferry with all the attractive villages along the coast, I think it would be a good idea if the railway, ferry and hotels worked together to promote holidays using the train instead of a car.

The green signals blink instead of one solid beam-it probably gets the driver's attention better. Especially if the train is supposed to stop.

That might be an artifact caused by the frame rate of the camera interacting with the lights. If the signals use LED lights, then they are probably driven by a pulse width modulated power supply, which means that they turn on and off at a very high speed. If the pulse frequency is close to the frame rate of the camera, it would look like the signal light is turning on and off while in real life it would appear to be steadily on.

I know exactly where you are coming from, unfortunately things don't always work out as planned, especially when it is a spur of the moment thing. Each time the guard finished checking tickets he joined the driver up front for a good old chinwag, I don't think they'd have appreciated me requesting them to be silent and my Spanish isn't good enough to understand their conversation. I was just really grateful for their kindness in allowing me to place a camera up front for what turned out to be a highly scenic journey. I hope you can understand my situation. All the best. Tim.

I love Llanes and Northern Spain, it is so different from the South. I try to leave in the original sound wherever possible, I didn't expect to be allowed to place a camera in the cab, to my surprise the conductor offered to speak with the driver and this video was the result. The camera picked up the conversation between the driver and the conductor and my grasp of Spanish is limited to asking for a coffee or a beer, so I opted to replace their conversation with music to avoid causing any potential embarrassment. The FEVE network is a hidden gem few railway enthusiasts or travellers are aware of, you are lucky to have it on your doorstep. Your kind comment is appreciated.
