Touring Northern Spain by Rail - Casar de Periedo to San Vicente de la Barquera

Part 2 - Enjoy uninterrupted views of the line ahead. The FEVE railway is now single track running through picturesque Northern Spanish countryside as we make our way from Casar de Periedo to San Vicente de la Barquera. In this section we pass unspoiled villages and the scenery becomes more rugged as the line climbs into the hills, often running next to pretty rivers or through deep rock cuttings.

I love Northern Spain it is so different to the South, it's another part of Europe most tourists never get to see, which is a shame because it is really beautiful, with its old historic towns and villages set in a highly scenic landscape.

When I was a boy, FEVE used to be a disastreous railway company; since the late 90s, it became much more prefessional, efficient and its trains and railtracks much better kept. It is a delight to see how well railtracks are kept and how smooth it goes now.

Hi Robert, Northern Spain is another beautiful place with a fascinating railway history. The extensive FEVE network of metre gauge lines stretches along the coast from the border with France to Oviedo and Gijón. The track was in good condition thanks to grants and funding from the EU.

+Deckie Deckie Hi, sounds as though you have some fond memories from your childhood in Northern Spain. I've got a few years on the clock now, but I'm not quite ready to slow down yet, far too many places to see and things to do ... so as you put it ... I'm going to keep on trucking ... take care, it's always nice to get feedback on videos ... Tim.

I noticed the water pipe at 21:20 for refilling steam engines with water. I wonder if it's still used? It might be, if they ever run tourist steam trains on that line.

We did pass an engine shed that was rumoured to contain 2 steam locomotives and a number of water columns appeared to be in good condition. I didn't see a steam locomotive and I can't find any evidence on the internet to show that steam still makes an appearance.

@@Timsvideochannel1 With your permission, Tim, let me add two informative links on these 2 different kinds of FEVE units (the series called "FEVE 2400" and "FEVE 2700") that make the route between Cantabria (Santander) and Asturias (Llanes, Oviedo and Gijón)... I am aware that the linked web pages (of the Spanish 'Ferropedia') are in Castilian Spanish language. Even so, I linked them for non-Spanish speaking railway fans, in case their very interesting contents could be translated through any of the automatic translation applications of web pages available and installable on the internet. By the way, great videos of some very beautiful routes. Best regards ferropedia.es/wiki/FEVE_Serie_2400 ferropedia.es/mediawiki/index.php/FEVE_Serie_2700

Alberto PEREZ GRAÑA I asked the guard to place a tiny camera in the front of the train whilst I traveled in the passenger compartment. That way I do not distract the driver. Passengers are not allowed to travel in the driving compartment.
