Driver's View... ODONTOTOS rack railway Diakofto - Kalavrita - Οδοντωτός [1] - [340]
World's narrowest public cogwheel railway 750mm (2 ft 5 1⁄2 in) gauge built 1890 - 1895 with total length of line 22,3 km and max. slope over 17,5 % [ ΟΔΟΝΤΩΤΟΣ ] in Greece.
Special note: In fact the slopes are steeper than shown in the video. That is due to the fact that camera was set still in line with the cab horizontal axis and parallel to the track, therefore reducing the true magnitude of the gradient.
The line 'climbs' from Diakopto village at sea level to Kalavrita at 720 m altitude through the impressive Gorge of Vouraikos river.
Mega Spilaion (Great Cave) monastery situated halfway the line, built 362 AD, is the oldest monastery in Greece.
The first 4 steam engines were built by CAIL in Paris 1891 - 1899.
Since 2007 the line is operated with new diesel-electric trainsets, OSE Class 3107 BDmh 2Z+4A/12, supplied by Stadler of Switzerland.
There are many bridges over the Vouraikos River, numerous tunnels, viaducts, waterfalls, caves and passing loops at Niamata, Triklia, Zachlorou and Kerpini. Anyone considering this trip should know that the scenery is spectacular and the trains run in perfect condition.

Great video - brings back happy memories of summer 2014 when my family and I took this train up to Zachlorou and walked back down the line to Diakopto. A fabulous trip, ena metrio at the station cafe and superb wildlife, scenery and geology all the way. I do remember the bridges and tunnels as being a challenge (especially the one at 32 minutes where my wife and younger son took the broken bridge over the old route but my older son and I checked the train timetable before braving the newer long tunnel!). Right on Bill. Let's not forget that this line, along with many others, were built without modern earth moving equipment. They used pickaxe, shovels and wheel barrows. Driver views of English railways are particularly interesting where, because of limited power in early steam locos, the track was as straight and level as it could be. Over streams, rivers and valleys all built in the mid 19th century. Stone viaducts and mighty bridges and tunnels still used today with high speed rail. The track and trains have changed, BUT the railway line is still the same built almost 180 years ago!
Gives me the impression to be on a roller coaster ride... I loved it

One grew up in the mountains and even went to a private boarding school in the mountains as a child at the age of 7 yrs old, and remember all the rocky mountains rocks in the fresh water streams crystal clear fresh water with crabs and fishes... 'i, even used to swim in this, and the best time was early morning twilight hour you could see the fine cool mist and the animals waking up and the songs of birds filling all the forests woodlands...as the sun rose up hitting certain mountains and casting it warm light, and the fresh mountain air... take me back to them days, with fondness in my heart... thank you for uploading this, every driver should be proud of recording their their Journey and sharing it with everyone... 'i, wish you all the best in your life to you and family... dam 'i, would love to be working and travelling this journey. When one hears that most of these Morden women say that don't need men, without men' women would soon to size to exist, men build everything on earth, and men do this to help everyone, and never seek any rewards not even a thank you, but the simple fact still remain, it is a man world and it is still run by mostly men... women have their place to... but what they call the new-millenniums guys and girls, are all snowflakes, expert everything for doing nothing theses people do not know what hard work is... they never done physical hard grafting work, even the farmers, are never though of, like this train driver... everyone should be shaking his hand. as one of our brother, still working hard. you have to be very skilled to know theses tracks and every bend down hill and up hill... one has a good friend who lives in Greece; Andrew Devine.... he also has a KZread Channel...

Magnifico. What an engineering marvel built by effort of how many? I have an observation, though. The driver did not hoot at all and there were hikers along the track. What if they were caught on one of those bridges? many places the hikers would have been forced to hike along the tracks as there appeared no other trail. The hikers too are great to venture in such terrain. VishG

That was nice. I love seeing things from way back. Here in the US when things start to get a little dated and a little worn someone just rips it up and replaces it with something that is more temporary than what was taken out. We just don't have touch with the past and I think that's one of the reasons some of us are so messed up. We don't know about roots and respect for what has come before us. All movement is not forward and all change isn't progress.
