"TOUGH!" - Julia Hartley-Brewer HITS OUT At Unemployed People Claiming Benefits Amid Welfare Reforms

Leading mental health and poverty charities and unions have strongly criticised Rishi Sunak’s planned welfare reforms as “deeply damaging” and an “irresponsible war of words”.
The Prime Minister announced a series of major changes to the system on Friday and warned against “over-medicalising the everyday challenges and worries of life”.
Among the proposed changes was a consultation on a “more objective and rigorous approach” in the benefits system, and having so-called specialist work and health professionals charged with responsibility for issuing fit notes instead of GPs in a bid to end the “sick note culture”.
Reacting to the reforms, Dr Sarah Hughes, chief executive of mental health charity Mind, said: “We are deeply disappointed that the Prime Minister’s speech today continues a trend in recent rhetoric which conjures up the image of a ‘mental health culture’ that has ‘gone too far’. This is harmful, inaccurate and contrary to the reality for people up and down the country.
“To imply that it is easy both to be signed-off work and then to access benefits is deeply damaging.
“It is insulting to the 1.9 million people on a waiting list to get mental health support, and to the GPs whose expert judgment is being called into question.”
Julia Hartley-Brewer is joined by Sophia Worringer from the Centre For Social Justice to discuss.

I often wonder if anyone is measuring the suicides in relation to gov and societies bullying of vulnerable people... A best measure of how successful a country is, is seeing how those less fortunate are taken care of...British welfare state on social protection's is dismal and incongruous and made to fail those in need (often through no fault of their own)

My company's owner is a Tory. And he has very Tory-style approach to staff being sick and absent. I work in care home, we are forced to come to work despite being sick. Acording the law, working with wulnerable residents we are not allowed to come to work if we have any symptoms of infecion (iinfectious disease prevention policy), also, we are entitled to 7 days off without proof of sickness from the doctor (self-cetification). None of those rules apply to my workplace. If we call sick and don't turn-up to work my managers threten us with disciplinary procedures. They could employ more staff or use agency workers to cover the absence, but instead they force us to come and assist our residents while sick, caughing , sneezing, having fever, etc... They ignore the law, our workers rights, our health and welbing and - the most important - our resident's safety. Tories don't care about peole. it is all about money.

I'm just pointing out the difference in income between UC and a 40 hour week at minimum wage ... because some people don't seem to know what that difference is. Also councils have limits on what they will pay people for their rent so not all of their rent is paid in many cases so the rest of the rent has to be paid out of the basic UC which is for living expenses. Reduced council tax also has to be paid out of that basic UC although i assume that is accounted for. In my case i own the lease on my little bedsit and get no help towards housing (service/maintainance charges) so that has to be paid from UC also. If someone is permanently long term sick they can get some help with service charges but if you're in and out of work due to ill health like me, working just one day in a nine month period will void any entitlement to that help.

If that is the case then it's quite evident that the actual problem is indeed the poor wages being paid by companies for what they deem to be low skilled jobs, that ironically they would never want to do themselves.

Probably a lot more than you! All you see is the surface going out and meeting and greeting, performing ceremonies, etc. But what you don't see is how much reading and learning he has to do in advance of any engagement, he has no choice over who he sees or where he goes, or when. He doesn't get to just have a day in bed because, or just call with friends, like you or me. Before you sling mud, spend a month following him around and doing what he does, learning and being briefed on what he has to remember, and how to interact with the people he has to meet, then come back and tell us how easy it was, how much loafing about you did, and why it is such an easy meal ticket. Try asking how much either Harry or Meghan do, or better still, calculate it on the same basis you have calculated William's apparent lack of work ethic (in your view), and share the data you come up with so that we can all see how much they have done, and how they compare to William, and/or Catherine when she was working. Until then, stop pointing fingers.

Just to clarify, if your are sinlge without dependants you receive just under £400 for JSA, if you are working full time in a minimum wage job after tax it's about £1200 take home. Your first child nets you £100 a month and £85 for every one after that and then you have other benefits you can such as housing and heating allowances. This is where the issue arises, if you are for example 21 and living at home with mum and dad then doing that minimum wage and paying a little rent to mum and dad is worthwhile. If you're a couple with three kids where having a job will either reduce or lose you benefits which either equal or exceed the minimum wage then there is often little incentive for one of the two adults to work. Ultimatly it depends on circumstances.

I absolutely agree with you but remember benefits aren’t immediately withdrawn the second you enter work. Let’s say you are the sole worker in a household with dependent children and your entitlement to universal credit (including the element of housing support) would be £15,000 a year if you had no other income. As you have dependent children and receive support with housing costs, you have a ‘work allowance’ of £404 a month. Income within the work allowance doesn’t affect your benefits at all so if you earned £5000 a year from working part-time, you would still receive the £15,000 in benefits or £20,000 in total. When your income exceeds the work allowance, your entitlement to universal credit decreases by 55p for every pound of income you earn after tax. So if your income was £6000, as this is under the tax threshold £550 would be taken off your universal credit. A full time worker on the minimum wage will earn roughly £22,500 a year which is roughly £19,700 after tax (allowing for the NI cuts). £19,700 exceeds the work allowance by approximately £14,700 so will reduce your universal credit by £8085 (55% of your net income above the work allowance). This would leave you with universal credit of £6915 in universal credit which, with after tax pay of roughly £19700, leaves you with a total income of £26615. In other words, working full time (37.5 hours a week) on the minimum wage would leave a person with dependent children £11,615 better off than if they didn’t work. This isn’t very much recompense for working full time I admit, but that is the consequence of means testing: high marginal deduction rates. Problems arise at the point where you lose free school meals (an income of £7400) which can cost over £1000 for parents with two children; and at the point where universal credit reaches zero at which point you lose free prescriptions, eye and dental checks, cost of living payments, etc - costing easily over £1000 per year. In the case of our parent who had a universal credit entitlement of £15,000, their benefit would reach zero once they had a net income about £27,250 above the work allowance or £32,250 in total: a gross income of roughly £40,000. So ignoring the impact of council tax relief, but accounting for the loss of universal credit, free school meals, free prescriptions, tax, etc, a household with one parent earning £40,000 gross is likely only about £15,000 better off than a household where nobody works. This is a big disincentive I’m sure, and I would like to scrap these cliff edges. Nevertheless, in no circumstance are people worse off in work than they would be not working at all.

Hmm. I'd argue that appropriate work is a necessity for those with genuine mental health issues, as just forcing someone with schizophrenia, depression or PTSD into any old role could cause more issues than you're solving. Unfortunately some of those currently viewed as unfit for work will not cope with many of the jobs available in the UK, not out of laziness but because there isn't the adequate support available to get them back into work. Without that it falls apart, they need more than a work coach telling them to accept any job they need good combined support from employer and medical professionals to get them safely working. It all feels like fancy words that appeal to those who don't actually understand the issues being faced by the majority of people and think it's as easy as clicking your fingers and finding these individuals a job that isn't going to make their situation worse. Research consistently shows that it is suitable/appropriate work with the personalised support to keep an individual in work that is good for them, not just expecting them to take any job going. Everyone seems to ignore that though as it requires more work than just shoving them into inappropriate sectors and letting employers/employees deal with the fallout.
