Toro Timemaster - Watch This Before You Buy - 3 Reasons Not To!

Don't get me wrong. This is a nice machine! But it may not be right for you!
I am a real homeowner that bought this mower to maintain about 20k sq ft of lawn including the 7k section of Bermuda that I test in this video.
I watched a lot of videos and while some have time comparisons a lot of them state that it "saves a lot of time." Well I will show you how much I save in the video on my main front Bermuda lawn vs using my 22 inch gas recycler. The results were suprising!

Been using the Timemaster for my lawn business since they came out. They definitely save time. Lawns that usually take me 45 minutes with a 22" Toro takes me 25-30 minutes. I love the personal pace. No issues with feeling heavy. You want to feel heavy, try a commercial 30. Of course I bought my units in the $900 range. I think $1599 is over kill. Toro has been taking advantage of people using inflation as an excuse to jack up prices. While others have raised prices, Toro has gone full tilt. You have to use what works for you.

I mowed my lawn for the first time with my new timemaster and from going from a very underpowered cheap 20in lawn mower to this one is a night and day difference. My mowing time went from 2hrs to 30 minutes and I wasn't in anyway fatigued after. It makes mowing the lawn enjoyable

I don't quite know how to tell you this, but the numbers aren't working out in favor of the cheaper mower. 30" vs 22" equals a 36% greater area of cut. Your times breakdown to a time savings of 38% You are saving more time than the greater cut area gives you. The time master not only cuts more per pass, it also does it an additional 2% faster. This would also offset the increased fuel and maintenance costs as the mower will be running substantially less hours per year. Finally, what exactly is your time worth to you? It's aptly named. It helps you gain control of more of your time and less to a menial task.

I've had my timemaster for a 1 full season and I LOVE IT! Took me 1 hour to mow with 22 inch bagger. I can mow with the time master I'm 35 min. Bagged as well. The cut quality is awesome. Better than the 1 year old Honda that now sits in the garage. It is a little heavier to deal with but I'm not a 6 year old girl so it doesn't bother me. Most of the season I mow 3 times a week so saving me nearly an hour and a half every week....I am very happy with it. The only thing I will say is....If Toro would put caster wheels on the front...it would be THE BEST MOWER ON THE MARKET!!

Glad you are enjoying your timemaster. It is a nice machine. Just doesn't save as much time as many people think and it is very expensive along with being very heavy. This mower is great for a large flat yard with very few obstructions. You are right about the caster wheels. Those would be a game changer for a yard like mine with lot of obstacles to go around. The mower performs well in my cool season lawn but really struggles with my Bermuda. If I keep the mower next season maybe I will do another review about that. Most likely this mower will be sold before then.

My 21” craftsman required me to over lap my passes even with a new blade. I was effectively getting 18” passes. On my Cub, minimal overlap is needed but only once the blade starts to dull. I like your reasoning. The cost is what held me back, and did hear about how it wasn't exactly a nimble mower. That's why I went with the 22" toro option 🤷‍♂️. I've enjoyed it's mow so far. It's actually lighter than my 21" Craftsman and has better suction. It's kind of funny. I think i have a similar size patch, 12K/sq ft. of Bermuda. I've been using the Timemaster for a few years now. Your time savings equates to about 30%, which is what Toro states, I think? Agree it's heavy, but I feel like it moves OK for a machine of it's size. I moved up from a 21" Honda. I felt like the cut never ended with the Honda, even though it was a really nice mower. I think there is less bounce from the Timemaster on my bumpy lawn. I've got some different slopes to maneuver on my back patch and the Timemaster does that with minimal scalping. When I cut with the tractor it was just a mess. I'm not really impressed with the mulching, I use the blower like you do to break up the piles. Great video, solid reasoning. Keep up the great content.

@@lanieroutside I bought the Timemaster on top of already having a Cub Cadet XT2 for my acre lawn. I cut the flat areas with the lawn tractor, and use the Timemaster on the slopes and around/under all the trees. I have found, that unless the lawn is PERFECTLY dry, and you are bagging up leaves with very little grass, pretty much all lawn tractors struggle not to clog. It is super frustrating. They do make blowers you can buy for the middle of the tube to solve that problem, but I have never bought one. On the Timemaster, there is very little distance from the blades to the bag, and with that big bag it has, it has become my go to for leaf pickup.

My 2 cents. When cutting the ridge of a slope a 22" single blade will shave the ridge. The 30 Timemaster, having two blades does not. I am on my second one in a 14 year period. My first was a resale, supposedly refurbished unit. The transmission blew. I bought my new one for $1100. I kept the old one in storage. After a few years I bought a new transmission for $176, did the install myself. Found many issues that the refurbisher missed, did not install correctly, which is my guess why the transmission blew. I cleaned up the carburetor, sharpened and balanced the blades. Runs perfect. The only negative about both in my experience is: "The stupid plastic piece that is underneath." Both have ripped off in my case. I love the machine. As long as you service them correctly, they do last. Yes a Kohler motor would be nice, but then the price for a new one would be even higher. Again, just my two cents.

Great review. The Timemaster does in fact save time over a conventional 22 incher (That's just basic math). But for me as a homeowner and not a commercial user, that time is lost because I pressure wash the underside after every use. I do this because grass accumulates under the deck like crazy. The longer you wait the more difficult it is to clean. I've tried all manner of deck coatings (except ceramic formulations) and none of them works effectively. I paid $1299 for this mower about 2 years ago. I'm not entirely certain I would purchase it again even at $1299 because of the hassle of cleaning it so often even though it provides an excellent cut comparable to my 22 inch Honda. I am damn certain I wouldn't spend $1500 on it.

@@lanieroutside Thanks for your kind reply. Our yard is approximately 12000 square feet and the Timemaster usually saves me 20-28 minutes over the Honda. But it takes me at least 15-20 minutes to drag out the pressure washer, hose down the deck, re-start the mower to engage the blades to aid drying and put away the pressure washer. Time saving gone the way of the dodo. Fortunately, I have not experienced any mechanical problems. Fingers crossed. 😏. Just bought a zero turn. So the Timemaster will be used primarily for cutting the perimeter on the days I’m feeling industrious and not using the Honda. I do find the Honda tends to create ruts when cutting same patterns. I'll give my opinion on the timemaster owning two of them and using them for HOME use for the last 5 years. NOTE although lawn companies use these for commercial use they really are not the maintenance for their type of cutting must be high with belt replacements. If you are handy with mechanical work you will be ok with the timemaster I have had to change the belts several times on both not real difficult but very awkward to change because its hard to get your hands in there. I have had the head gasket blow twice on my older timemaster the newer one is still ok this is not a difficult job. Ive replaced the transmission on both once the transmissions are about 90.00 dollars and plan on 2 hours labor not hard you just have to pay attention to where everything goes and in what order. I have to adjust the cables from time to time on the drive system to get it to move better again not difficult. The transmissions are the weakest point for me because I live on a lake and my back yard slopes down and coming back up is a challenge and you have to put a lot of energy into your legs. These mowers are NOT friendly for cutting wet grass I did it once and learned a lesson it was a pain and these engines bog down quite a bit, dry grass is no problem. Time savings not a lot as you stated but the cut is excellent. I bag my grass and these machines are like vacuum cleaners they pick up everything if you have a lot of leaves you will love these. Bottom line always have the 3 belts in stock and the cables because they will go and be mechanically inclined and you will be fine. I like them because I have their quirks down and know how to fix them. Would I buy another one...yes

I have found the same thing with the wet grass and with Bermuda always use the side discharge during the growing season for sure. I do have a sloped yard also so will see how long the transmission holds up. Leaves are the main reason I want a bigger riding machine in the future to pull a vacuum with. Although the timemaster bags and mulches leaves well I just have way to many trees for it to be efficient. I end up blowing them off the lawn in the winter and dealing with them the next spring. Thanks again for sharing your experience👍

Yes, agreed. I have had one for eight years and as long as you’re mechanically handy, they are fine machines. They really make your lawn look good. I got mine on sale when it was new for a great price. $500! I Just replace the head gasket this weekend not a big deal 12 bucks. As mentioned, pulleys belts and bearings all require occasional repair or replacement.

I'm on my second Timemaster, and for my yard it saves me about 30 minutes per cut vs my old 21" mower, and saves me a tremendous amount of time in the fall for leaf clean up. Unfortunately I don't know if I will purchase another due to the price gouging by the company. Even though the mower was intended and originally marketed for residential use, I think Toro realized that commercial mowing companies are using it so let's jack the price up. I bought both of mine for $1000 which was a fair price for the mower, I don't think I can justify an additional $500 when no improvements have even been made to the mower, and it needs some improvements. They are now pushing the electric version of the Timemaster for $2100, good grief where does the greed end!

I have one… it saves me about 1/2 hour on my cut, my biggest complaint… gas tank is way to small and that sponge inside the tank has caused more over fill spills…have no idea what it’s in there for. If I didn’t have to refill the tank I’d save even more time. Now would I buy it again… no I don’t think so… for the amount of money I spent I could’ve bought 3 decent movers. I’m 64 and I find it easy to maneuver and it does a very nice job of cutting. I’m hoping I get many years out of it for the $1500 it cost me.

22/30=.73. You should be able to mow the same space in something like 3/4 of the time with a 30" deck vs a 22. I didn't do the math but I think that's about what you saved in rough numbers? For me *if you want to stripe* the TM is the cheapest way in. Get or make a stripe kit and you're off to the races. It's much harder to stripe with a lawn tractor because of turning radius, I know because I sometimes mow with my garden tractor. I personally can't stand the look of 21-22" mower stripes on a large lawn, just looks weird to me. A zero turn is the best bet for many but that's a lot more money and you still may need a push mower for trimming. Your points are all valid though and I would add 1. It can be a Clump-master and require a lot more deck cleaning than an average push mower. 2. It can require more maintenance than you're maybe used to, snapped deck belts, dropped engine mount bolts, personal pace engagement cable, kill switch... I've had to fix a fair amount of things since buying Spring 2019. I do enjoy the exercise most days but it's a bigger bulkier mower for sure. 20,000 square feet of salad bar in NY.

Great insights thanks for sharing! Half of my lawn is Bermuda and the only way you can mow it in the Summer is with the side discharge. The deck volume isn't large enough. Bermuda doesn't really stripe so that isn't a concern for me. It does leave a line between the blades that looks like two 15 inch stripes. Only in the Bermuda lawn. The mower cuts fantastic in my back lawn that is a fescue mix. It is a nice machine and I am lucky so far to have no major breakdowns with mine after two seasons.

The Timemaster leaves wheel marks and two noticeable stripes with the dual blades in a thick Bermuda Lawn. I will video what this looks like this year when the lawn thickens up. Thanks for the video..i agree with alot you pointed out.. I was very dissapointed with this mower..Have had dozens of mowers from various brands..briggs & stratton use to be a bulletproof name when i was younger. -There really not nimble for smaller yards. turning that thing around alot adds up..maybe zero turn front caster wheels? -Blade engagement is a real joke.. -Gas tank capacity and GAS CAP?? WHY TORO? complete joke -Standard discharge spring and exit flap..nothing special there -Starting was always hard like your pulling extra pulleys. -The bag is big but its a two step process..dont forget to remove your blocky thingy.. -Personal pace is not very efficient ergonomics is wierd feeling and irritating on finger reaching while still trying to mantain control of that big handle bar -The blue Blade engagement safety switch is annoying and unnecessary. Overall im now looking into a motor swap or probably sell it & look for a older belt driven toro or scag for this class of cutting..20-32in Only innovative thing i see helpful is the 90 degree handle bar folding ability and being thick..thats cool for storage.

Its amazing to me that the underpowered Timemaster has survived over other residential wide cut mowers that have come and gone (yes I know there are still some other commercial wide cut mowers). I guess Toro has superior marketing and a larger distribution network. A few years back when I was looking at the different wide cut residential use lawn mowers I decided to buy the Pro Series (Yellow) Craftsman 28". It was on sale for $699 including the lawn striper vs. the ~ $1,100 Timemaster price at that time. It wasn't the sale price that swayed me, I was concerned that the Timemaster was underpowered for my lawn, which I often let grow very tall (12" plus). The Pro Series has a 9.5 Briggs and Stratton engine and it eats up my nearly 1/3 acre with ease, saving approximately 35 to 40 minutes vs. my previous 21" Bolens standard (non powered drive) push mower. My only tip for buyers of any multi blade mower would be to add in grease zerks to the blade spindles to help them last nearly forever vs. the lifetime lube sealed units that never last anybody's lifetime.

@@lanieroutside Prices on just about everything make no sense to me anymore (I'm a senior). I thought about going with a small lawn tractor, but for me there were not enough positives. My Pro Series 28 has a super easy fold down handle and I can slide it under a work bench when not in use. The small lawn tractor would take up garage space that I would rather reserve for car parking. Also, small lawn tractors seem to require more service over the years - I believe in keeping things simple. In addition to adding the spindle grease zerks, I also added screens around the spindle deck mounts to keep grass clippings and twigs from entering the belt drive area to increase belt life.

That mower has a kawasaki engine and more heavy duty commercial components at an even steeper price but well worth it for a person that mows multiple lawns for a living.

Six minutes saved per cut for a homeowner isn't worth $1500. To a professional lawn care business owner like me, six minutes per job, at ten jobs per day, is worth every penny. That's an hour saved per day, which means I'm having dinner with my sexy wife, watching the sunset together, instead of driving home watching it alone. I also buy used equipment and paid $800 for mine and it looks and runs like new.

Not going to purchase. I will stay with my 21 inch super recycler mower. Plus easy to get into my hatchback vs timemaster will not fit. Plus very expensive. Not worth it.

There's no way you push mow 7000 sqft with a 22" in 22 minutes !!!!!! I have a time master and it takes me 40 minutes to mow 6000 sqft. The reason the mower feels heavy is because the deck is made to last. Smaller mowers have thin decks that will only last about 3 seaons before cracking. Ive had my timemaster for 8 years and still going strong.

Actually if my yard wasn't as sloped I could mow it faster with both the 22 inch and the timemaster. The smaller mower does have a thinner deck but will last way more than 3 years for an average homeowner. I am still mowing with both until I upgrade to a rider soon. Thanks for watching.
