That is also a great mower, but on a 1/3 acre or better, it's no replacement for my Time Master. And like many, I keep these types of tools in my shed :-p. One of my neighbors has this same Honda mower you linked. It's very light weight compared to a TM, and it's speedy. Also, you have to pull-start it again when you realize you forgot to pull the gutter downspouts before you started mowing. I notice the neighbor with this Honda only mows his front lawn with it, however, and uses a tractor on the back. I definitely wouldn't knock that Honda for what it's worth on a small lawn or edging around a large one, and Honda engines are pretty reliable in my experience.

I soooooo wish I had seen your video earlier. October of 2023, we found out the very hard way about the faulty flap. My son was mowing the lawn and ended up with a piece of metal lodged in his ankle. The piece of metal was sucked up by the mower and lodged in his ankle and fractured the bone. 3 days in the hospital, a surgery and 12 weeks of recovery was a really hard way to find out that the flap was faulty. Oh, and ended his HS football season prematurely and totally hindered his basketball season. Really annoyed with Toro. And the #6 issue of clogging is no joke. We spent more time clearing out the mower and cleaning underneath than we did mowing. Thanks for the honest feedback.

I've had a timemaster for 3 cutting seasons now. I cut 20 lawns a week with it and have put 400+ hours on it. You're right about all of these problems. A pulley busted on me about 150 hours in. Clogging is slow for me because I'm in a dry climate. My transmission still works, but I've noticed it struggles on slopes. Despite the issues, I like my mower. The 40% faster mowing time really adds up. Also the personal pace is really nice. Very good video. Subbed.

You are right about the mower clogging up because of the useless blades. However i got some harden steal plate about 4” long and welded them to the blades so the blade looked like a cross. I bent the welded on blade so that it would blow down and I have never had any problem with the deck clogging since. Now it cuts awesome and never clogs.

This was really good, and the honest evaluation is very helpful. I have owned the 30" Timemaster for 9 years. I paid just under $1,200 for it, and have diligently tracked my repair costs, which are just OVER $1,200. So, basically I have purchased the Timemaster twice in 9 years. But only got one machine, of course. As I write this, my machine is int he shop because the muffler is loose. One of the bolts holding it to the head has vibrated itself out and is lost. The muffler guard vibrated off long ago. The shop tells me to fix it, a new head will need to be installed because the threads that hold the bolts that hold the muffler are worn. Total repair estimate is $500. I agree with this review that in the final analysis you don't save much, if any time with this machine, due to the repairs and maintenance. I've been looking at the DR SP30 as a replacement, but may just go to a smaller mower. It will also be easier to haul around as I have a couple properties. UPDATE-I decided to buy a Kohler CV224-3002 engine and will do the swap myself. After a lot of research I decided the mower was worth keeping, and the Kohler engine is a direct fit, and a beast. I'll soon find out.

Great video and flow. I wanted a Timemaster in the worst way over the past two seasons. I heard about the fuel tank complaint and the pulleys failing. I know two guys who have one and they have no complaints. In any case I decided to stick with my two "older" 21" Toros. They get the job done and when my son is running the other, the lawn gets done faster than any Timemaster by itself. With that said, I'd still like to give one a whirl but $1500 is steep knowing pulleys will be an issue. Be good.

I’ve had my Toro Timemaster for a couple of years now and I haven’t had any issues. I sharpen my blades a couple times a year which might be preventing some of the clogging issues, but I’ve always done that regardless of what mower I’ve owned. The only part of the video I have to agree with is the fuel tank. I mow the backyard, refuel, then mow the front yard. It’s annoying, but really a minor inconvenience, all things considered. I love this mower and hopefully mine will continue to hold up over time. She starts on the first pull every single time. I can’t say that about any other brand that I’ve owned.

I've been using the timemaster for about 3 years now and I agree that all walk behind mowers bog down at some point it doesn't really do that great mulching either and does the same in wet grass as any other IMO I've learned that every week after using it commercial you have to open the black plastic part an blow in there to get the grass that builds up if not that's problems waiting to happen if you can do it sooner even better, and the plugs that go on top of the pulleys I used silicone sealant so they don't pop up an debris gets in the bearings I also replaced them with the commercial ones other then that I've never had any other issues I'd buy it again you just have to maintain it and yeah I wish the tank was bigger to might have to put the time an energy to what you did

Small petrol tank but it takes 1min to fill it up, wet grass gets stuck underneath but doesn’t bother me really. Changing the belts tomorrow for the first time. I've found a definite improvement in mowing time with the TimeMaster. Granted, I've only had it for one season and one mow so far, but I've been pretty happy. My yard does have places - particularly in Spring, where the grass grows tall. It struggles a little, but I can usually make it through. My previous Toro would have absolutely choked in the same situation. I didn't have any issues with clogging last year, though. I've seen enough videos on the pully system to know that it'll come for me one day, but I have a hunch that many of the other issues are YMMV. Frequency of mow, type of grass, type of weather, length of grass, aggressiveness of how you mow, terrain types, etc. Those will all put more or less stress on the mower. People complain about the gas tank, for instance, but I think the only time I've had to refill mid-mow is when the grass was really tall. IMO, that's more an issue of me skipping mows during growing season (and me being lazy and still trying to use a lower setting) than the mower letting me down. I'd consider my overall lawn area 'average', but I do have hills on either side of the house. Overall, no regrets yet, but it's good to have videos like these so we know what could be coming down the line.

It's why I like your channel because you do honest reviews. I own a Toro 22 inch Personal pace self propelled rear wheel drive lawn mower that I purchased in 2012 For my one third acre lot. It struggled up the hills because of a weak transmission. I then moved to a house which had one half, an acre and a steep Hill. I looked at the time master and concluded. It would be too weak for the hills. A neighbor of mine bought a toro time master. It lasted one season. He then went out and bought a john deere tractor. I decided I wanted a mower that could handle a seventeen percent grade hill and do it safely. There was no residential mowers that could handle the hill regardless of how much I spent. So I decided on a gravely pro walk 36 inch commercial machine. The only thing plastic on it is the gas tank. It has a fourteen and a half horsebower kawasaki is kawasaki engine. It works perfectly. I will never go back to purchasing a residential mowing machine ever again. The toro time master residential machines are all junk, Plastic throughout And the decks are 14 gauge sheet metal that is stamped, Which end up cracking at the high stress locations such as the handle bar Attachment location. I now look forward to mowing my lawn with my gravely. But one has to have the money to buy a up front and it is 2-3 times more expensive. But if you can afford it then many of your Maintenance problems are going away forever.

Luclily I still use my 1989 Toro GTS 2 cycle mower one of the best mowers ever. As a former Toro dealer and still work on timecutters and its Exmark twin one of the biggest problems are from using the home owner version as a commercial mower ! The front tension pulleys survive much longer if one actually cleans out the belt cover ,the transmission failure is generally caused from lack of cable adjustment or from the unit being used as a yard cart as guys will carry a full can of grass and the mower bag full of wet grass back to the truck or take the blower for a ride. There are definitely places the bean counters have cut corners but that what happened when Toro decided to go down market to sell more units at home improvement stores instead of just independent dealers. Honda has done the same thing . Need a tougher mower? Go commercial or buy one of the lesser known manufacturers from a dealer instead of just relying on a name brand there are some much better built machines out there!

I own the commercial 21" Honda for my lawn care business and I have a completely different opinion. My Honda clogs up constantly. This is the part of it I hate the most. My guess is that even its 200cc engine is to weak plus the back discharge is inferior to side discharge. Despite these flaws I love the reliability of Honda, ease of use and the huge grass bag. I'm in the process of either getting the larger 30" push mower (Timemaster included but given this review I doubt it). Maybe the Turfmaster which is commercial Timemaster. Or I'll go all in and get the residential zero turn Toei Timecutter since it'll work for 2-4 hours a week..

One thing I’ve learned about mowers over the years of repairing them is that less complex features are better. I’ve dealt with electric starter motors that were completely burned out, blade clutches on Hondas that were completely worn down from many years of use, and so many other unnecessary accessories that break over time. That is why I love my old Toro, it’s got a reliable 6.5 HP Tecumseh and the personal pace drive system. Those are the only two features on that mower and they’ve never had a single problem

Got the same mower. My old Brigs and Stratton Brute deck rusted out so bad that the mower became unusable only after 8 years. The motor a Briggs and Stratton still works good. I picked my Toro up cheap a month ago and it runs like a champ. It's probably 15 years old and has a solid deck and that 6.5 Tecumseh still performs very well. The personal pace drive system is awesome. The person I bought it off of must have maintained it well.

I now have a TimeCutter zero turn and have five times the issues I had with the TM30, however, the TM30 blew out a headgasket in year 4, and I was doing perfect maintenance.

Thanks for an honest review. Our yard is approximately 12,000 square feet. Deck coatings of various kinds only help a little. I power wash the deck after every mow and this comes very close to eating up the time I saved over my 21 inch Honda. Drag flap needs replacing after 10 months of use. I clean under the housing covering the belts and pulleys after three or four mows. I bag the clippings and it does a fantastic job in high dry grass. Like you, I fill the tank twice during the mow but I find this to be a minor inconvenience. The quality of cut is comparable to that I get from the Honda. I think I paid $1270 for this mower in October 2021. It was then and remains grossly overpriced. I’m on the fence as to whether I would buy it again even at the price I paid last year. I definitely would not pay $1400-$1500 for it. But I do like the cut and the fact that when my tall fescue is overgrown (usually because the weather has been inhospitable for days on end) it performs like a champ to get it under control.

I own two of these things an early model and a current model and I agree with everything you said. I don't have the clumping under the deck because I cut my yard when it's dry but it still needs to be cleaned after a few cuts. The pulleys I changed immediately for the commercial Exmark ones on both mowers. The real downfall of this mower to me is the personal pace transmission it is junk. If you bag your grass like I do it becomes hard to push and struggles to get threw the grass. I have a snapper 21 inch commercial lawnmower as well and that transmission is the best transmission of all the push lawnmowers. I need to figure out a way of getting that transmission set up on the toro's. If you own a timemaster always keep belts and cables in stock at your house and be handy with being able to repair them it's not hard. Nice, honest review JB. TORO has always had the reputation of making some of the best equipment you could buy. But in the past few years, I have read about a bunch of problems with some of their stuff. Not only the TimeMaster, but with their TRX track drive snow blowers as well. These TRX units were meant to compete with the Ariens RapidTrack's, but had catastrophic transmission issues. Bad news for anyone who dropped the 4k on one. Not sure what is going on with TORO's research & development department, but I think they may want to start doing some mandatory drug testing for those guys........ 😵‍💫 Nice gas tank mod too, JB. The quality issue with newer Toro's, is what always eventually happens when a once proud, highly regarded entity gets absorbed by a bigger corporation. It's very very rare that quality goes up after a merger. The company being bought, loses it's autonomy, gets raided for the positive side of what it has to offer, then gets turned vanilla as it's melded into the cookie cutter product line of the buyer. Employees get cut due to redundancy of job titles, R&D after it's raided for it's technology, slowly tanks, and the innovators within, move on due to morale loss. The company eventually just becomes shell of it's former self. And in some cases, is phased out. Thank you MTD.

I disagree with a lot of this. I bought one in 2013 and mowed a half acre lot. Last year we moved to a much larger yard. Its always ran perfectly even though at the smaller place I treated it like crap. Hardly ever washing the deck and only changing the oil every couple years. It did break last year, but it was 100% my fault mowing in overgrowth and hit a small stump. Even then it just broke the sync belt, the first time it had ever broke. I'm 45 years old - I've been mowing grass for 30 years now - and seems like your complaint about clogging is not unique to this mower. Yes, with no discharge on the left blade it clogs a little more. But I've never seen a mower not clog in wet grass. Proper use of any mower requires you wash it out after use. This is just how lawnmowers work. Same with tightening the deck bolts. Bolts need retightened. This is the current state of the universe. After moving to the bigger yard, I researched updating my mowing equipment. I still couldn't find anything better than the TimeMaster for the niche it fills. So I bought another one and have two now. Thanks for posting, good content. Just wanted to make sure viewers see that others are having different experiences.

You nailed it on the intro - it's in a class of its own. Despite all issues (I've had each of them outside of the flap), what's the alternative? I'm unaware of another wide-body mower that doesn't take up a huge amount of garage space and is easy enough for anyone to operate. I extended my warranty and will run this until it dies, but hope someone comes out with some true competition or even a revision to this mower that solves its (several) weak points.

  • @GarageGear

Hey Zach well said! The flap I made in one video is linked in the description so you can find it there. Definitely a better way to go. @@GarageGear Thanks for the suggestion. I'm only interested in residential use, so heavy-duty deck construction isn't really a requirement for me. I am concerned about the clogging that you mentioned with the Time Master. I have St. Augustine sod so the blades are much thicker than some other types of grass. Also, the SCAG has a very similar under-side deck design, so I'm concerned that one will clog also. I've bought two 30" electric rear-motor riders (Cub Cadet $2600 and Ryobi $2800) and both have failed on me after about 10-15 hours of use. I'm switching back to gas, but I'm looking for something more reliable than Craftsman or Troy-Built 30" riding gas mower. Those other models you mentioned, the SCAG and Ferris, are ~ twice the price of the Time Master; do you think it's worth it for the beefier transmission and more torque to address the clogging issues you've seen with the Time Master? How do you feel about the Turf Master HDX? I'm sort of stuck on 30" just because of my available garage space and my yard size. Anything larger would be overkill.

  • @GarageGear

    @GarageGear

@@KennyDiFiore I hear why you’re saying my friend! I’m kinda in that same window too. Those mowers are pricey but you get what you pay for. The hdx does have better pulleys, and I’m pretty sure a better transmission. Clogging will still be a nightmare because the deck is the same. Let me know what you decide. Dont use it for mulching dry or especially wet grass. The lawn conditions dont have to be perfect but they need to be close to normal conditions. Side discharge the thick grass by starting on the high setting. Then keep lowering with the side discharge. You learn with experience how to use this mower. Its a been a great mower for me after trial and error. I use commercially as well. In 5 years ive takin it for repairs about 5xs. Thats it. It baggs well. I bag 90% of the time and I side discharge the other 10% of the time.

Had my Timemaster for 4 years as well. You are spot on with your comments. Try the rear bagger with the strip kit going up a very small incline. Ha Ha What a joke, not near enough power with new belts and adjusted correct. Oh, let's not forget the rust issues on the underside of the deck. Power wash underdeck 4-5 times a season, also sprayed some rust-oleum on it and use Pam to undercoat the deck which seems to help. Plan on doing that as part of your yearly maintenance and Pam as needed. For the money I would have expected better. Time to adjust the valves, perhaps you can do a domo on that? Thanks for your honest review and my experience as well. Still trying to figure out how to get to my battery. Got mine 5-31-2018 for $1,050.00 from a dealer. Pulleys are fine, but I do have to now change the blade cable. Since I am in there I will also change the belt as it has a crack on it. I am in Missouri so my yard is steep going from main floor in front to basement entry in back, no problem with the transmission. Agree on the grass clumping under the deck being a pain.

I bought a Toro TM30 at the beginning of last mowing season. I agree with some of these. I did shred the drag-flap on one of the very last mows of the season, right around 25hrs. I called Toro this spring and told them, and they shipped one out immediately at no charge. I too agree the size of the gas tank is laughably small. I bag my clippings, so I just top off during a dump of the bag and quick swig of water, so it’s not so much of a time adder for me, but it is inexcusable for a tank that small on a mower of this size. My 21” Troy-Bilt would mow my entire lawn and then some without ever running out. Regarding the clogging of the deck, this is something I have never encountered. My lawn is very thick and times when I mow it is very long, but I have never had even the slightest issue with clogging. I know the issue is not an anomaly, because there are complaints about it all over the internet. Not sure what I am doing differently, but I have never encountered it. I have had no other issues yet, but I am only at around 28hrs of use. I do like it so far. It definitely speeds up time spent mowing compared to my 21”. The quality of cut is also very nice and consistent. Aside from a bigger gas tank, one thing I really wish it had is casters for the front wheels. Turning the machine in tight confined areas can be challenging due to the weight and size. Casters would be a tremendous help.

I find mulching is it’s weakness, I get better results with bagging and side discharge. I hose out the bottom after every mow though. I thought about the turf master, but in Canada it’s $4300, timemaster is $2000. Time will tell, but I love using it. Oh, and my backup is a Honda HRR! Best mower I ever had, just wish it was 30”.

I purchased a Timemaster several years ago when the price was under $1,000. I maybe, had it for 1 month before I returned it. Like you, my yard is larger than most for a residential neighborhood, about 15,000sf. The problem I encountered was the mower would just die. After about 20 to 30 minutes of mowing, the mower would just stop and would not restart until it cooled down. This happened everytime I cut the lawn. Don't know if this issue was ever resolved, but I never bought another one. I replaced it with a Cub Cadet 33 inch walk behind, about $1,200 at that time, now ovewr $2,000, I think.. That was a true workhorse. Quick and powerful. The only issue I had with that one was it was kind of a beast. More powerful than I needed. Sold it about 5 years later. Now just have a couple of the standard size walk behinds, 22 in, I think. Looking for a wider cut, but haven't found anything yet. Was considering the DR 30in, not sure though.

Thanks for making this video. I've had my Time Master for about the same time as you. It needed a new engine within the first year which was, fortunately, covered by the Briggs & Stratton warranty. Since then it has required several sets of belts which are a royal pain to install and the last time I had to replace the pulleys too. One thing you didn't mention which I've also had issues with is the electric starter. I know Toro sells versions with or without this feature but yours appeared to have it. In my case, it stopped working after about the second year. I suspect it needs a new battery as I've already replaced the fuse. I'm going to use mine a couple more years to recoup the cost but I'd never buy another one or anything else from Toro for that matter.
