    What are your top five recommendations for first year/first season grass? Do I aerate, dethatch, overseed, irrigate, etc.? Oh, did you install your irrigation yourself?

  • @lanieroutside
    @lanieroutside10 күн бұрын

    For cool season grass just follow what is recommended for your area. Spring pre emergent, fertilize spring and fall, mulch mow and return clippings, irrigate as needed and use a post emergent weed control as needed. I am in the south and use cool season grass in my shade so fall overseeding is a must. Aeration is great if in your budget to do. My irrigation was already installed here.

    @lanieroutside I appreciate. I'm in the south as well, NC, and I have Bermuda grass, so your recommendations are right on, brother. These past days of rain have helped my lawn quite a bit. I started to think everything I was doing wasn't being applied correctly. The rain has proven me wrong. Green lawn with a few struggling spots that I can handle. Watering goes a long way. Thankfully, I follow your suggestions and, above all else, stay patience. I apply a preemergent HEAVY in the late winter. When the soil temp reaches 50 degrees, i apply the pre emergent. Wait two weeks then apply again. When the second application is down and i see the green buds start to appear, I’ll apply a triple 10 fertilizer moderately heavy. Then once a month add a fertilizer, followed with bio char supplement and when the heat is really on, an iron supplement for deep greening. WATER!!! Lots of watering. Deep watering help promote deep roots for healthy lawns. I water my lawn three times a week, along with a soaker hose usage. Lawn looks great. Cutting three times a week is not uncommon…spring scalp after the first month…wait mid summer scalp again…then i keep the deck low at 1” height…golf course green and short

    Hey, bud. Another question for ya. Since taking possession of this Bermuda lawn in March, all I've done is mow it once per week and have learned it's too tall, usually 4-5 inches when I cut it and typically cutting it to 3.5-4 inches. This past Friday, I mowed it the lowest I have yet at 3.5 inches and it obviously looked 75% brown afterward. Am I thinking correctly to keep taking it a half inch lower with each mow and mowing more often like I've been reading? I guess I'm trying to get it to 2-2.5 inches without seriously harming it in this near-record GA heat right now. Thank you!

  • @lanieroutside
    @lanieroutsideАй бұрын

    Ideally you would mow it down below where your intended height. If you want to mow at 2.5 inches then mow it down to 2 inches and then maintain it at 2.5. This may require twice per week mowing. If you are not getting much rain and can’t irrigate then it would be best to wait before adjusting your height of cut. Mine needs to be lowered but I’m not doing it right now for sure. Good luck!

    I normally mulch when I mow, but I was thinking the last time I mowed because I had so many weeds that I bagged the last couple times because I felt like if I wasn’t mulching it with the weeds I was cutting it would help me control? Also, I see your recommendation for the fertilizer that I got some baby grass that have taken growth in a large bare spot. Do you think that same type of fertilizer to help it take off now for different concentration?

  • @lanieroutside
    @lanieroutsideАй бұрын

    Bagging is really just a personal preference. I don’t do it regardless of weeds. When you return clippings they contain nitrogen and moisture which is beneficial to the lawn. Hit those weeds with a “safe for lawns” type of herbicide. As far as fertilizer if you didn’t do a soil test a standard type of lawn fertilizer will work fine for your lawn. Right now watering is a big focus in much of the country. If you aren’t getting a lot of rain be cautious with the fertilizer and herbicides. Good luck!
