Toro 30" Timemaster / Fuel Tank Foam - Should It Be Removed?

Toro 30" Timemaster / Fuel Tank Foam - Should It Be Removed?
In this video I remove the foam in the fuel tank of my Toro Time Master and check to see just how much fluid it will displace. I will leave it out for a while and see how it affects the operation of the mower.

Now you'll experience what vapor lock means by doing this. My old Timemaster leaked fuel each time with the old version. Toro put that in for a reason.

I purchased a toro time master in 2013. I had it 10 years but I used it enough for 20 years of cutting. Mine did not have foam. I'm personal lawn is hilly. I found my motor did start cutting out and dying with the fuel level would get low. I now have a 2024 toro time master with the foam. I've used it for one month. So far it has made a difference.

Hey thanks for doing this. I always wondered how big the foam was and was surprised it did not take up but a 2 oz space. Your yard would look great with the stripper attatchment on that Toro. I know it makes my yard look awesome.

I have had the newest Toro TM with the 223cc now for 4 years. At the start of this mowing season I started experiencing engine problems, the engine started surging when the blades were not engaged, and it would cut off about every fifteen minutes. I changed the spark plug, fuel filter, and just the other day the gas cap thinking maybe it was not venting properly. Today hoping that I finally solved the issue, the mower again cut out at the 10-15 minute mark with no fuel in the fuel filter, so I knew the issue was fuel tank related. So with no other way to inspect the inside of the gas tank I finally pulled the blue foam out, and behold I was able to finish the remainder of my yard with any further problems. After I finished mowing I ran the remainder of the fuel from the fuel tank so I could properly inspect the inside. I did find quite a bit of debris that could have been settling on the dome screen on the inside of the tank, so I cleaned that out. I know that Briggs and Stratton put the blue foam in the tank to keep it from sloshing around while mowing and this is in part to an improperly sized O ring that they place on these gas caps. I would highly recommend that anyone that owns this this mower remove the foam but you must to put a slightly larger O ring on the gas cap to prevent leakage. I went to my local Lowes and purchased an assorted O ring set from Danco for about $3 (plumbing section), the largest ring in the set works perfectly.

I am on season 5 with my machine and have had no issues with the exception of the personal pace drive which was covered under warranty. I removed the foam from my tank last year and I dogeza a very small amount of fuel leaking from the cap, but only when the tank is filled to the top. I will use your suggestion of replacing the Oring.

Yanked it out with forceps because of the same refueling issues you have. Much much better now! Wasn’t Toro that engineered that it was B&S. They also engineered that piss pour fuel cap. Worst cap I’ve ever experienced on a small engine.

When you tested it, why did you fill the gas tank just 1/3 of the way? You should have put it full to see if the gas would come out of the gas cap.

dont take the foam out! its a splash guard, fuel will start to leak out the top as the gas caps are faulty after a few years, trust me, I know, I regretted taking the foam out. the problem is with the gas caps, they're terrible. had mine for 4yrs, finally found a replacement tank and a better vented cap that screws down, so much better!

It’s there because the gas tank is so shallow when people would refuel it would spill out instead of fill the tank quick enough.

Been running this mower five years. When they increased the engine size they did not increase the tank size. My only nit when I started using this mower was run time and you always ... ALWAYS get lots of overflow when filling. Fuel hits the flat ceiling and boom overflow. Flat ceiling + short neck = overflow. Engineers? HaHaHa The foam is absolute BS. I was fueling way too often till I finally removed the foam. Vapor lock? Folks how many mowers are there with no foam and no vapor lock? You've seen the evidence of what DC bureaucrats do to look smart and in charge. Now use your own common sense.

Sure looks like a high tech piece of plastic! All that volume with little mass and passes fuel without any blockages. Maybe even helps catch debris from reaching the fuel line? I agree, leave it in there. Wanna bet a bunch of Toro lawyers has something to do with putting it in the tank? Consumer lawsui….er, safety…yeah, that’s it…consumer safety!
