Tori Amos - Cornflake Girl (Glastonbury '98)

Музыка

I loved her plugged tour, it was the best concert experience for me. 5 and 1/2 weeks was pretty good, too, but I was crazy far away.

Her band is on a ridiculous groove here (that bass playing is on another level), and Tori's her usual amazing self murdering that Bösendorfer piano through the end of the song. The whole performance just GROOVES. An excellent performance over all, and I really miss this era when ridiculously talented artists like Tori Amos actually could end up on like MTV and be considered "mainstream".

Don't forget the incredible drum work! You're not going to keep up with Tori playing standard 4/4 boom-chick beats. It's played in a half-time shuffle, and it's crazy fast. It's obvious he's trying to play with her note-for-note at some points much like drummer John Bonham of Led Zeppelin used to play with guitarist Jimmy Page note-for-note. Degree of difficulty for piano and drums: 8/10, which is damn high for rock.

It's great to see them zoom into the crowd and see guys singing with her. Most of the guys I know who know I'm a fan assume I'm gay like her only fans are all homosexual. I always love being part of the crowd at her concerts. It's different than seeing any other performer live. Her crowds of fans are like a big family. A Really dysfunctional family but that's the best part! :) Ears with feet unite!

That bass playing is just ridiculous. But the whole band (minus the poor guitarist in this particular song) just grooves like an excellent power trio. And then Tori's vocals on top of that.

she plays piano the way a rock star plays guitar, moving her body as much as the instrument allows, improvising and showing off like a rock god ego-tripping with a dramatic solo as if time has ceased to exist and it's just him and the guitar, the only things in the entire world. but she doesn't lose herself in the music; she rather becomes herself, and steps into her power. her other performances are full of passion and emotional intensity, and she brings effortless freedom and uninhibited energy to every show, but this one in particular has an almost exaggerated bravado and swagger i've never seen a woman emulate so strongly. but it's not that she's possessed by the music; she possesses it. sometimes she lightly teases and flirts with the piano as if it's her plaything, and appears to seduce the audience, slowly trapping them under her spell; but here, she fully dominates and straddles the instrument. there is a raw primal sexuality to her that is simultaneously very masculine and very feminine. other female singers attack the crowd, snarling from a place of deep pain and darkness, but she pays them no mind, simply kicks the piano's ass and acts on whatever urge she feels. i think she genuinely lives in her own world, does everything for her own pleasure and doesn't give a fuck what anyone thinks of her, but also enjoys being in the centre of attention and shamelessly soaks up as much of the spotlight as she can absorb into herself. no one can tame her. she'll bite your face off before you have a chance to open your mouth, and forget you ever existed in the next three seconds. she is a narcissist, an exhibitionist, a brazen androgynous rebel and everything i aspire to be.

Well I like Kate. I have so much respect for her. But Tori has done and said all the things we wish Kate would have the balls to do. Kate doesn't exactley keep her fans satisfied does she? One tour in her whole career...13 years between "The Red Shoes" and "Aerial". We have has a Tori album pretty much every 2 years since 1992 and an amazing tour to follow each. Plus, Tori says and sings about woteva the hell she feels about, regardless of who it offends. Kate plays it safe a lot of the time.

what the hell do you mean "plays it safe"?? this woman has written about fucking incest and religion and clinical insanity, she's covered all kinds of taboos with an easy smile on her face, dancing around lightly as if a weird crazy princess in a ballroom, constantly making the disturbed feel comfortable and the comfortable feel disturbed. her debut 'the kick inside' came out when she was a goddamn teenager and she pushed to make her first single a strange ballad with literature-inspired lyrics sung entirely in falsetto. also, listen to 'the dreaming' and tell me that's not a progressive art pop masterpiece. that whole album is full of risks, don't tell me she hasn't taken any. she literally does whatever the fuck she wants and doesn't care what anyone thinks; she invites and welcomes us into her world if we want to explore, but doesn't change herself to try to please us, she takes up all the space she wants in the way she wants to. it's clear you haven't listened to her best work. go give 'hounds of love' a listen too, that's also a unique and beautiful album.
