Rather than deny the charge, Joseph acknowledged in his official history that Josiah Stowell had hired him in 1825 to assist in a treasure-seeking venture in northern Pennsylvania.1 Stowell wanted his help because Joseph was reputed by some of his neighbors to be a “seer”-someone who could look into a special stone and find lost or hidden objects.2”

Joseph’s unwillingness to discuss his arrest and trial for being a disorderly person is evident since it’s suspiciously missing from his official history. In fact, Joseph told his followers that his early persecutions were from his visionary claims, but truthfully, his severest persecutions actually stemmed from his activities treasure digging. 3. Affidavit of Isaac Hale, father-in-law of Joseph Smith. March 1834: “I first became acquainted with Joseph Smith, Jr. in November, 1825. He was at that time in the employ of a set of men who were called "money-diggers;" and his occupation was that of seeing, or pretending to see by means of a stone placed in his hat, and his hat closed over his face. In this way he pretended to discover minerals and hidden treasure. His appearance at this time, was that of a careless young man - not very well educated, and very saucy and insolent to his father.”
a. “Smith, and his father, with several other 'money-diggers' boarded at my house while they were employed in digging for a mine that they supposed had been opened and worked by the Spaniards, many years since. Young Smith gave the 'money-diggers' great encouragement, at first, but when they had arrived in digging, to near the place where he had stated an immense treasure would be found - he said the enchantment was so powerful that he could not see. They then became discouraged, and soon after dispersed. This took place about the 17th of November, 1825; and one of the company gave me his note for $12[.]68 for his board, which is still unpaid.”
b. “After these occurrences, young Smith made several visits at my house, and at length asked my consent to his marrying my daughter Emma. This I refused, and gave him my reasons for so doing; some of which were, that he was a stranger, and followed a business that I could not approve:

I just want to say that I think it is heartwarming and I'm not trying to be overly sickly sweet, but really, heartwarming that you and John have this relationship post you being a permanent member of the MS show. There doesn't seem to be any acrimony after a work "break up" at all. Loved seeing you back on MS with the "other John" and I love this collaboration. It goes to show that good people can be good to each other and understand their needs to be true to themselves. Thanks, John and Carah for providing some positivity to this world when things look really bleak most of the time. It actually made me tear up a bit to see it.

You are barking up the wrong tree by trying to argue with John Gee. Dr Gee obviously didn't pay attention to what the Book of Abraham declared any more than you nor Mr. Osborne. We have been carefully watching Paul Gregesens video part 15. Paul has clearly demonstrated from the text itself what all of you obviously missed. In his new video he points out where Abraham was commanded to teach the Egyptians about a Hebrew astronomy ALONE! It says right in the text why the astronomy itself was nothing but an object lesson to teach the Egyptians about Abrahams family which was Israel. In other words, nothing in the entire Book of Abraham was claiming Egyptian anything unless it was counterfeiting Noah. Chapter one clearly says anything Egyptian was pure Idolatry! WHY DO YOU GUYS, ALONG WITH DR. GEE, AND OTHERS IGNORE THIS TEXTUAL FACT? What this means is this, trying to show discrepancies about Joseph Smith getting anything Egyptian wrong is ridiculous and a complete waist of everyone's time! The text clearly says God told Abraham to teach about Abrahams posterity ALONE!. Cant any of you guys read? watch Gregersen's newest video through, its right in front of your face! Joseph Smith said he only added the facsimiles to the Book of Abraham in order to demonstrate how false gods are fashioned. "Abraham 1:14" Egyptians counterfeiting Gospel truths in order to alter everyone's true understanding. See Abraham chapter one. In other words all Smith was doing is reversing what the Egyptians counterfeited and got wrong back into what God intended. God told him to only teach the Egyptians about his seed which is Israel. Trying to find parallels to Abraham in order to prove how Smith knew nothing about Egyptian by digging up copied similar sources is simply pure speculation without any real evidence. Harold Bloom the famous Jewish Scholar said it was an impossibility that Smith could have copied names and places that were discovered in the dead sea scrolls over a hundred years later. likewise Oleshem is documented name today that no living scholar knew of in 1840. The Book of the giants discovered in the dead sea scrolls document that Smith knew of many things in the Book of Enoch that no man on earth had yet discovered until the dead sea scrolls. The critics all ignore these real LIVING facts. The story about Ahijah is only one of many impossibilities that not only identified an exact characters ancient name but even described the very role he played in Enoch's life story. Joseph Smith obviously wasn't just making things up just because Osborne spends years of his life searching for any long shot similarity that he can discover just so he can call it a perfect match! All yellow journalists do that same thing everyday and always call it truth. Gregersen has connected the real Abraham story by contrasting the Egyptian falsehoods with Hebrew outcomes using exact mathematical connections that cannot be shown to be manipulated. He has demonstrated it to correlate the very same matched history as we see in Daniel chapter two and in Revelation 13:18. The same 666 combines into two separate timelines without a heart beat of deceptive ways to achieve it. GREGERSEN HAS DESTROYED DAN VOGELS THEORIES BY DEMONSTRATING EXACTLY WHY THEIR HAD TO BE A LONG SCROLL.

If I had known the background story of Joseph Smith back in 1978, I would never have joined the church. The leadership knows full well how devastating this knowledge would be in trying to convert nonmembers, so it is omitted by the missionaries, and is never talked about in church. I honestly feel like I was lied to. Back in 1978, the story I got was Joseph was a sincere, uneducated country boy who earnestly prayed and saw God and Jesus. That he literally translated the gold plates, but never a word about a stone in a hat, treasure digging, his polygamy and polyandry, and his teenage wives including two who were only 14. Don't even get me started on The Book of Abraham. The church is a complete fraud, and the leadership HAS to know it.

He was in the process of excommunicating most of the 12 before his death. Most and all the sources your are drawing from are from sources that are 5/10/50 years after Joseph’s death and never contemporaneous. Brigham Young is the author of this mess and he along with all those that followers have edited truth and the real history. Joseph is and was a Holy Prophet. From a personal perspective (raised Mormon, 2 year mission), it really boils down to what John said in the beginning. "Most Mormans just don't know." I have learned many of this things since my great escape, but at the time, had no idea of the real truth. The truth is not spoken of or actively hidden from the congregation. Keep up the great work.

It took perhaps a month before realizing that Joseph was a cheat, a liar indeed a sociopath and more than a bad person but a truly evil one. Don’t know why seemingly intelligent and well meaning people continue to follow that garbage but that’s their journey not mine. In the word’s of Monty Python, “run away, run away”.

Two out of my three kids my older ones were having issues with the history and the prophets and some other things in their 30s raised in the church good kids with the gospel up until those times that they were having the problem I speak about and my daughter I asked her what the problem was started telling me some of the things thought she was pulling my leg joking around and it wasn't until I started doing some deep research that I found out there were many things I did not know it felt very much betrayed. The trend many years ago was to not disclose anything controversial to an investigator or newly baptized member. I sat is a sacrament meeting where the speakers was a former bishop and his newly returned daughter RM. Her talk was pretty good. The father's talk dealt with JS and the failed Kirtland Bank, that JS believed men lived on the moon, the Smith family history of treasure digging, and the family's bankruptcy and loss of their farm. The missionaries sitting in the audience beside me were up in arms since they had investigators and did not want them to hear negative things about Smith. It was as if anything about Joseph Smith had to be filtered since it was FYO, privileged information not for the eyes and ears on beginners in the church. But missionaries are also told to follow discussions in their manual. Anything related to history or the biography of the the prophet Joseph Smith is not there to teach. So these facts may contribute to why many things about Smith are not taught by the missionaries to potential converts. Then again, in today's world they can just google his name and find information about JS.

I grew up in a Protestant church that is almost the exact opposite of Mormonism. For one thing, I didn't find out about the person who founded our church until I was in grad school, and decided to learn about the history. Imagine belonging to a denomination and learning absolutely nothing about the founder. There are many other differences, such as tithing being optional in both when you gave and how much you gave; communion being open to absolutely everyone whether baptized or not--it was up to the individual to decide if he or she wanted to take communion; excommunication being non-existent; no overarching church structure, with each individual church being governed by a board with equal amounts of men and women (although women's roles were otherwise restricted); me being an atheist, the minister knowing it, and him letting me lead Sunday School singing when I asked.

I was all in on LDS until I had my son in my early 30s and started thinking about what teachings I wanted to pass on to him. The more I examined things I had taught people in classes for years, the more I was uncomfortable bringing my son up in the church. I raised him without any religion instead. For myself, I literally shut down my church mindset and walked away over a decade ago. I didn't know any "anti-Mormon" stuff until recently and I'm now shocked at what the LDS church is pulling off with its membership. The plates in the forest being translated via a peep stone can ONLY make sense if the peep stone actually works. Ergo the scribes and whoever was involved MUST have bought into the peep stone thing at the time. Since that was Joseph's con from before it all fits. He was running his same con only this time he ran it on the people helping him produce the book, because they were the kind of people that would buy it. Now fast forward. No one buys con's like that any more. So that whole situation has to be papered over and replaced with an origin story more acceptable to present sensibilities. Honestly it's a good thing for the modern church that photography was not really a thing at the time. Because that allows them the freedom to have painters depict it however the church wants with out being tied down by images taken at the time of the actual events.

I don’t think the fact that he had a criminal record alone kills Joseph’s credibility. The charge itself isn’t a big deal. It’s the why behind the criminal record and how that ties directly into how the religion was started. He was charged for glass looking with the same seer stone that he used to “translate” the Book of Mormon. That’s what destroys credibility. It’s important we make that entire point rather than just say to members “he had a criminal record”.

This is me. I was a devout Mormon missionary in 1998 (then I got married in the temple, eventually divorced, too). I didn't know ANY of this. One of my investigators found the King Follett Discourse and I was shocked (didn't know about godmaking, either). Thank you for all you do to shine the light and give people information - I've been out for 15 years (I'm lesbian, it made my leaving the church a bit easier) and I can safely say I've learned more about Mormonism and Joseph Smith in the last year from people like you than I knew in my entire lifetime. One of the biggest problems with the money digging story I think is that LDS scripture itself tries to misdirect it in JS history verse 56 "In the year 1823 my father’s family met with a great affliction by the death of my eldest brother, Alvin. In the month of October, 1825, I hired with an old gentleman by the name of Josiah Stoal, who lived in Chenango county, State of New York. He had heard something of a silver mine having been opened by the Spaniards in Harmony, Susquehanna county, State of Pennsylvania; and had, previous to my hiring to him, been digging, in order, if possible, to discover the mine. After I went to live with him, he took me, with the rest of his hands, to dig for the silver mine, at which I continued to work for nearly a month, without success in our undertaking, and finally I prevailed with the old gentleman to cease digging after it. Hence arose the very prevalent story of my having been a money-digger."

Informed Consent -- fabulous ! 'This' is a very balanced well executed discussion that is SPOT ON ! Well done; both of you. Carah, your hat and braids reminds me of Norwegian heritage; cute! John and Carah, you guys need to continue these discussions into the future; you have a very delicious demeanor and natural chemistry that really adds to the dynamic of this mormon story interaction. I don't know what you call it; kind of reminds me of Zelph on the Shelf (you can't call it that) but you should really consider something beyond Mormon Stories Podcast to bring you two together for these relevant discussions of belief, religion, early mormonism, and faith crisis... Ok, this is really my main comment; so many of us were indoctrinated by our parents, grand parents, aunts , uncles , family friends , for DECADES; our first apologists were our own family and friends. This is the answer to Carah's question of how does this line out and be plausible for so many people even when they hear the truth... maybe years later. The answer is that we're not just rejecting truth claims that don't line out or add up... we are ALSO rejecting our personal heritage (all of it) who has essentially LIED to us. In other more pointed words, the Church that (who) lied to us were our OWN family and friends. OMG. When I dropped this (today's) discussion on my father about three years ago (almost the same discussion word for word, believe it or not) he equated it to me dropping an atom bomb on the kitchen table. The reason, because for him too, the information would not only force him to reject his own entire 80+ year life, but also reject his mother and father, aunts and uncles, and decades of family friends and associates. He simply couldn't handle it. Carah; don't be surprised (I know you're about 33 now) when you're 65 and still unravelling how this fucking mormomism has wreaked havoc on your life. I started unravelling this stuff in my late twenties and here I am in my mid sixties still processing through mormon stories podcast , and zelph on the shelf , and Carah & John... you guys are just as important for me as Gerald and Sandra Tanner... and all the rest. This IS one of those things that takes a LONG time to sort. marcus

Thank you for supporting the exmo content creators out there Marcus. The atom bomb example is a perfect example of how most of us feel when we discover the truth. I honestly wanted to just be dead because I didn’t want to face the future after finding out it was all BS. Eventually, we all get to a point that we feel ok, but damn it takes a ton of energy and work to climb yourself out of that depression.

I was born under the covenant in 1958. Five generations Mormon on one side, six on the other. By 1977 I was vocally questioning Mormon doctrine. In 1983 I left the church entirely. Around that time I visited a library, no internet then. I found a lot of information about Joseph Smiths trouble with the law and his diving escapades. I remember being so shocked about his true history and that I had never been told any of this. I NEVER would have subscribed to any of the LDS teachings had I been given full disclosure about his life. I felt tricked, deceived and even manipulated. I had undergone severe persecution by certain members of my ward and stake when as a teenager I first started to openly ask questions. Not just by my peers but their parents. I was blacklisted by my closest friends for sincerely wanting to understand things that weren’t making sense to me. I was met with such strict admonishment and punishment that left me stunned and confused. After all that to discover Smith was in trouble with the law repeatedly was not just validating but caused me to feel anger at those adults that had ousted me as a teenager. I was treated as a leper by the only community I had known. But the biggest emotion I felt was empowerment to at last know the truth. That my instincts that something was wrong wasn’t an act of heresy due to a lack of faith as I had been accused.
