Grange Hill, Gamesmaster and TOTP were on my evening timetable also before I did my homework. Not mention the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Thankfully in 1996 I was able to add the Simpsons to that list, when the BBC gained the rights to show it and that was a big deal for a lot of kids who didn't have Sky. TV was different back then because a lot of families couldn't afford Sky (or Cable) like they can today which meant terrestrial programming from the five major channels had a lot more variety. This also meant fighting for supremacy over the remote control with you siblings ha ha.

There's a big difference in visual style between the early 90's and mid/ late 90's. Early 90's was a different era. By late 90's, you can recognise the period haircuts and clothes, but apart from that things haven't changed that much style wise (although obviously technology has).

Back in those days we didn’t realise how good and iconic Top of the Pops was. It’s like they say you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. Each week was pretty much a little time capsule of pop music and culture wrapped up in a 30 minute or so segment. Happy days and good times. I sometimes like to watch shows like this and pretend I’m living back in the 90’s 😂, even if just for a little while.

Love this, even though there's a bit of fuzz on the actual video tape. 1997, the year of the Spice Girls. Wish I had a time machine. Loved video recorders, loved having no mobile phones, loved no Internet, loved no social media. Loved that everywhere still had a high street full of shops and shoppers by the thousand. Everything was easier, simpler, just honest. No skanks, no click here and have your bank account wiped. Loved that we all back then knew how to have a conversation with each other, instead of walking around with our heads down using our thumbs. What the hell went wrong, things are supposed to get better....aren't they....?

Maybe. I found myself back at college recently and was shocked by the number of kids who despise modern chart music, and instead listen to the 80s/90s stuff I grew up with. Back in the 90s I simply didn't know any youngsters who were rejecting all the major acts of the period, and raking through dad's 60s records in search of fulfilment.
