I remember I bought the 12 inch extended vinyl of that ABC song and used to blast it out on my (cassette) stereo and speakers in my fiesta mk1 at the time as a young 18 year old (It probably was not even that loud, I think the stereo head unit cost me £5!). Those were the days. I'd forgotten completely about the Beastie Boys being around, another album I used to try to harm my young ears with, happy days ! Lovely to see Simon and Janice in this....

Basically the finished product with a few minor rough edges shaved off in post production. Nothing too Juicy! Janice Long seemed genuinely lovely. A natural enthusiasm and effervescent that didn't seem forced or artificial. fitted the tone of the show perfectly.

Allo young man, THIS was surreal. I love how they're playing around and in some cases they're being caught out by the producer? BUT I have one pressing question: WHERE did you manage to get this from? This IS my era of music. I was the one dancing to tunes of the mid to late 80s. I remember getting the NOW! double cassette takes.

it is very interesting indeed to see just how it was filmed and edited, I got it with countless others from an archive, unfortunately I think the BBC have banned alot of ones featuring jimmy saville, which for me is particularly sad because if you ignore that monster your left with a really rich history of both music and visual effects. I will try to upload more interesting ones with bits not seen on tv before though as there are a fair few :)

This is a very rough set of edits, there was probably alot more than this and even rougher edits than this one like full studio tapes and such but yeah a fair bit of this never made it to the transmission copy. Its possible that the charts were done on the rough cut but seperated because of the need to quickly replace on demand for the day broadcast. On another unedited version the chart list is after the episode stuff, randomly bolted on the end

Well that is because martin the lead singer of the pop band ABC was using a dummy mic when performing that song on top of the pops called When Smokey Sings. So yes Martin from ABC was miming , he was not singing that song live , and when T'Pau lead singer Carol Decker mime to her hit song Valentine on Top of the pops in February 1988 on the same stage where Danny Wilson mime to his song Mary's Prayer. That drum kit never belong to T'Pau , they did not bring it into the top of the pops studio
