Although I think this concert is amazing. Texas flood definitely elevated the opinion of the rest of that concert. As a whole his Tokyo 1985 show is his best. Michael even said that himself when he reacted to it a year or so ago.

When I was 19, I didn't really listen to blues at all. Was into Pantera, Ozzy, BLS, etc. My brother(whom was also a bit of a metal head) and I smoked a bowl and he said, "You want to see some fucking guitar playing?!".. He put this on, it was a VHS, and I pretty much just sat there awestruck for the entire tape. The rest is history.

I saw it in the theater when it was still running (usually as the midnight movie) back in 1985 probably about 6 times. We would all run around the theater for Life During Wartime. Last year for the re-release was the first time I'd seen it in the theater since then. It was fucking magical. My wife had never seen it in the theater nor had the younger friends we were there with. I think one had never seen it at all. They were all absolutely blown away - as expected. I decided that I needed to get up and run around the theater this time as well. :) No one else did, but I didn't care.

Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott’s is fantastic because of his amazing playing, the brilliant band and the intimacy of the venue. Toto Live in Paris. All brilliant, but Lukather is absolutely on fire (guitar and vocals). Nightwish, Showtime, Storytime - Live at Wacken, 2013. One of the best gigs ever recorded. Led Zeppelin at Royal Albert Hall in 1970. James Brown at Boston Garden in 1968 (the day after MLK was shot, James actually stopped a riot cold from taking place at the concert, its amazing, and its all on youtube.)

Re: James brown; the Mayor of Boston played the concert on public access television so people would stay at home rather than go out into the streets. Imagine being a young black kid in 1968 in Boston and there is an entire free James Brown concert live on tv. James Brown was the most famous American on planet Earth at the time. And the only music you'd normally see live on tv in '68 is country music and one song a week on the heavily censored Ed Sullivan show. Not only did he stop a riot before it started and save the entire city, most people watching at home had never seen live music like this in their lives. It was a pivotal moment in American music history I think that is sorely overlooked. In the wake of MLK, Brown was leaned upon as a black community leader, a role he was ill-equipped for, and it ultimately broke him.

SRV & Double Trouble "Live at the El Mocambo" and Van Halen's "Live Without a Net" are must watch DVD's. Stevie's playing just decimates the crowd, who clearly weren't ready to hear that brand of Texas blues come screaming out of his amplifier. I picked VH because it's mind-boggling to watch EVH run all over the stage and jump up and down for two hours, all the while nailing every tapped harmonic and playing things that I can't play when I'm sitting in my little basement studio, concentrating as hard as I can to try to pull off even some of his amazing licks.

OMG OMG OMG Mike..... Can't thank u enuf for this. Luv u and ur videos and channel. I'm a part time rock drummer who is feeling a bit stale with rock and pop. I'll spend the next 2 months watching all ur recommendations over and over.... and already KNOW and FEEL the INSPIRATION that is soon to be injected into my musical brain. You da man. I appreciate you and am always uplifted by your 'passion' for music.... (and Amazon boxes... HA!)

I have to add another vote for Peter Gabriel’s “Secret World Live” concert. I wore the double album out on cassette, CD, Laserdisc and DVD. Peter’s lineup is killer; Tony Levin on all things bass, David Rhodes on lead guitar, Manut Katche killing it on drums, Jean Claude Naimo on keys, Papa Wembas and his singers on backing vocals and Paula Cole for supporting vocals and all things duet… oh yeah and the whole thing was directed by Robert Lepage. Dammit I now need to go watch it again.

You have great taste in music Michael. If your talking Unplugged, Queensryche did quite probably the best of all those shows. The Eagles live at the Capital Centre 1977, Judas Priest US Fest 1983, The Who at the Isle of Wight, Led Zeppelin in Australia in 1972, so many amazing performances, at Red Rocks, particularly U2. The old Midnight Special tv series, again, particularly Blondie and the Cars. The English equivalent was The Old Grey Whistle Test. A myriad of incredible artists appeared on both those shows, a veritable smorgasbord of 70's brilliance.

I was fortunate to see Fleetwood Mac on The Dance tour in a box section with Steve Wozniak (and others). Lindsey's performance of Big Love was and always is... just stunning. Such an astronomic talent. The vocals took 2-3 songs to warm up, but after that, the Mac was in the groove. Great show.

I'd love to hear why The Song Remains the Same didn't get a mention. The way they took their album material in so many different creative and mutually inspred and spontaneous directions....listening to that in the late 70's rocketed ME to a level of love for the possibilities of live music very similar to the love you clearly express in your video. Zeppelin at Royal Albert Hall shows them in a very young and pre-glam and utterly powerful state. And their Knebworth show, while not universally flawless, does contain an incredibly powerful Achilles Last Stand (I defy anyone to find the tiniest trace that Bonham is within a few months of dying from alcohol...he is a TACK DRIVER), and possibly the greatest live recording of a song of all time: Kashmir. It shows a band who's survived the 70's and are still deeply, passionately in love with their music. If they had played for a month at Knebworth, had played every song they ever wrote 5 different ways (as they were perfectly capable of), and all the recording of it were lost except Kashmir, I'd still call it worth it. I feel like with the album version they told us about a mythical place called Kashmir...with this live performance they take us through the gates!!

Love your enthusiasm and passion, Michael. I wish Space Trucking from Deep Purple's Made In Japan album had been videoed. At the time, Purple were at the top of their game, and the performance was absolutely wild. The energy, the dynamics, the improvisation. Killer. Or (and this is a live video) Joni Mitchell's Shadows and Light show. Joni, Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker and Don Alias. The whole sequence from In France They Kiss on Main Street to Hejira is stunning, magical, heartbreaking.

Always love your videos, esp the passion you have for everything you do. I want to go back to the earlier days of rock and roll, 1964 with the TAMI show. Just some of the performers were James Brown, Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, Supremes, Beach Boys, Chuck Berry. All live, no lip synch. Sure, it’s a 1964 production but this was a forerunner to all that came later. Check it out. James Brown is really spectacular.

One listen to (and viewing of) “Texas Flood” and any person who doesn’t play guitar will instantly go to their pawn shop and buy one. It’s that hair-raising!! And you said it already, AC/DC’s “Live at Donington” is an easy winner, as well!!
