It makes me happy that a guitar player of your caliber is still happy like a little kid watching SRV. In 30+ years of listening to him he gets me every time.

My Dad told me a story of when he was living in Austin Texas in the late 70s/early 80s. I remember this verbatim. “Me and my friends got off work and went to this little narrow hole in the wall for a drink. There was a guy with an electric guitar, wearing a white cowboy hat and colorful boots. My friend pointed out that it was Stevie Ray Vaughan.” My Dad went on to point out that he came up to the few people that were there and shook their hands. My Dad didn’t talk to him much but shook his hand and drank a beer with him. THE MOST PAINFUL part of this, for me, is that my Dad doesn’t really care about famous people. He’s a simple man......All the while, my head is sunk and jaw on the floor because my Dad shook hands with possible my biggest musical influence.

I moved to Austin in 2000 at the age of 18. My Dad who had lived there for the last 15 years said, “This town used to be cool.” with a dead pan look. Then he explained how they tore down the all the places that Jimi, Janice, and countless others were known for playing. Can’t even imagine what a “utopia” it is today. 🤠

Hands down the greatest guitar player of all time. There’s just no debate for me on the topic.

My first.. saw him and double trouble on Austin City Limits on PBS, at like midnight, when I was 9yo. 🤯 Best night ever.

I was 21 and saw him (sort of) at Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, 1990. I say sort of because, though we had back stage passes for Johnny Winter, after that show we had to find the best spots we could for the final two sets of the night...Etta James (I don't remember this set, we may have gone to another stage, as we were young and stupid and didn't know what we were missing) and then SRV which was our whole reason for being there. I remember I could see his hat and his outline, only because he dressed flamboyantly. Did not care a bit. The house was rockin. With Ol' Muddy flowin, and the summer sun setting, behind him, SRV brought down the house. And I missed Albert King on the same stage just a couple hours before. Again, young and stupid and just didn't know what I was missing. Then, I was at a Dead show in Alpine Valley, and a week later heard the news that Stevie had played there with Clapton and others, but his helicopter went down after the show.

1978 I was living in NYC standing outside a club just having seen The Fabulous Thunderbirds with Jimmy Vaughan and Charlie Musselwhite. I overheard people talking about Jimmy’s brother playing that night in the Village. So my friends and I go to see this guy play. No stage ,no drum risers ,no nothing. Just this little guy wearing a beret, amp on the floor strat in his hands... I was floored! That night changed my life.

Wow man what a memory!... myself born in Sweden, traveled to Austin in 1999 at the age of 19 to be closer to Stevie. Always felt I was unjustly born in the wrong part of the world...

Stevie Ray didn’t just play the music, he was the music. It just flowed out of his heart. An absolute treasure.

Seeing the pure joy in your face as you talk about SRV is perfect. As a guitar player, I sometimes have difficulty explaining to people what listening to players like SRV does to me. It is a joy and excitement that is hard to discribe. Your reaction and explanations in this video describe it far better than I ever could. Thank you!

Stevie loved playing guitar more than life itself. He literally lived and breathed guitar. DRIPPIN WIT SOUL

Brother I agree 100%. If I had a few wishes it would have been to see him live back in the day, ABB when Duane was alive, ZZ Top, and Skynrd. Between all of them they had some of the most amazing axe players. SRV was so intense and his tone was something no one had or will ever have.

Absolutely. Stevie played guitar like it owed him money!

His tone and vibrato come from the depths of hell and pain...absolutely one of a kind. There will NEVER be another SRV. Never.

Used to go over to friend's house a couple years after he fell in love with the electric guitar. We would stay up all hours dissecting music, arguing over whose licks were better. This was mid-80's so we had lots to think and talk about. Lost my buddy to a motorcycle wreck in 2002. He was the most talented guitarist I've ever known personally. Loved music, hated the attention. Now it's 2022 and i get invited in your home and get transported back to that golden time with your channel. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Michael!

Oh my golly, I got such a kick out of watching your face as you watched Stevie Ray! I know that feeling... I’ve loved SRV forever! To me, there is no one who can hold a candle to him! Stevie Ray, Roy Buchanan, Santana, & Buddy Guy were the original four guitar influences in my youth. Love SRV.

Glad I can say I was fortunate enough to see SRV on his Couldn't Stand the Weather tour. Opened with Voodoo Child (Chile). I think it went on for 20 minutes. Thank you for the memories Stevie Ray!

I too was fortunate enough to see him several times. As an opener for Gregg Allman(amazing show) and a couple more times as a headliner. Nobody better. Thank you SRV for the memories and incredible music.

SRV does the greatest Voodoo Child I have ever heard. Watching him play it, and hearing what comes out, makes goose bumps on my skin. He was a MASTER of the guitar.

I agree. It’s a superb cover very well played. But if you hear to “bold as love” played by John Mayer, you’ll find another hendrix masterpiece, with many good licks and colours that give to a 55 yrs old song, a new life.

The very first song I heard Stevie play was “Texas Flood”. I was blown away.. I know every single one of his recordings and this song is definitely one of my favorites. A friend of mine who’s an accomplished player, knew of Stevie, but didn’t KNOW of Stevie.. I started “Live at El Mocambo” for him one night and we watched the entire performance.. when it finished, my friend said ‘Man, I had no idea.. I just can’t believe what I just saw’! Jaw Dropping!

Always loved that SRV embraced the single coil noise in the dead space of his playing (there certainly wasn't much). The fact that these days players are still having their minds blown by just his lead-ins, not to mention when he's actually within his song structure says a lot.

SRV has always been at the top for me as well. I'm not a musician so forgive my description of why, but, it's his ability to be a non-stop tornado of energy that is still silky smooth that melts your face while never losing the groove. Didn't mean to rhyme but that's how he makes me feel. Thanks for the video.

I heard SRV about 40 years ago and those notes sent chills up my spine. To this day, those notes still do that to me. Most real thing I have ever felt in this life. Got me through some dark times. I really appreciate what you said at 15:40, I always felt that, just could never get the words coherent as you have. Thanks.

I love to see any SRV reactions! He is my absolute favorite. He had worked so hard and became clean and sober the last four years of his life only to be killed at age 35 in that horrible helicopter crash. RIP Stevie Ray......

Man , I just came across your channel. I have to say I love the passion you portray when you watch the man play. Bravo sir. I wish a lot more people shown this much passion in the things they like. I am 38 now and when I was 8 years old my mom took me to see Stevie and Double Trouble on a Thursday in my home town. I will never forget it. The little man from texas put on a double encore that lasted over an hour and I had school the next day. I remember him talking to the crowd and this is when he was sober and cleaned up. He answered a question that I asked when my little voice yelled out during the sound check . Why are you moving your lips when you play . He laughed and heard me from the 7th row, what the kid say ? Some repeated what I had asked and he said laughing. Im talking to her. Shes my friend and you talk to your friends right ? And he started to play again

The tension he creates with those bends makes me want to jump out my skin!!!

Anyone can break down the mechanics of what Stevie is doing, but nobody can describe the spirit of it.

I've watched so many "reaction" videos with Stevie Ray Vaughan. I wanted to see others and how they reacted, not on how well he plays, but how he was exhibiting that connection between himself, his instrument and the soul of the music. I have always looked at his style and felt that I don't see this same connection in very many musicians. I began to wonder if I was just letting my admiration of what he did, take away any objectivity about him. I could never put into words what exactly I was sensing about his style, other than to say that he could reach inside you and effect you soul. He would somehow grab that part of you and not let go. When he was done playing, he left you wanting to go back to "that place" again and again. Sometimes I "see" that connection take place in others who react to these videos. I notice it when they finally quit gabbing and go silent. THAT is when Stevie Ray's greatness is on display. Amazing. Your video, here, explains some of what I experience when I listen to this man. I am not a musician. I can't play any instrument. I have always been drawn to guitar since I was a kid. Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and so many others. But Stevie Ray had something unique that I could never explain. You have come the closest to describing this characteristic than anyone else has. Thanks for that.

On the SRV tribute video, Clapton covers this. You can tell that he is still visibly torn up from losing his on the tour they were on. He rips into the intro and channels his Cream self at his absolute peak, playing with the same emotion that he suffered when he lost his OTHER friend, Jimi Hendrix. He plays inspired with the guitar crying for him. Love SRV playing this, but I also love the Clapton tribute.

I said the same thing when I saw it. Clapton had to bring back the old “Slowhand” to give proper tribute to his friend, Stevie Ray.

What feels nice in your video, is to see you smile the way I actually smile when I watch SRV : truly a smile of pure feeling, enjoy of the power he puts into his blues. This is why SRV was like no other, and why I love to listen to his blues : nobody ever did that before, and it feels soooooooo good

It is a joy to watch you show such love and joy at SRV's playing. I make the same faces listening to him too!

I got to see him in April of that same year. It was a small venue in El Paso Texas, and I stood just a few feet from him. To this day the greatest performance of any guitar player I have ever seen. Made Clapton look like an amateur.

As a much younger man I remember hearing him first come on the radio. It was like the sharpest knife cutting through the music of the time and just smacking you in the face. In the time of so much electronic music and beginnings of hair bands and rap, it was the raw power, emotion and honesty of his music that made his work a life long experience for this now much older man.

Stevie played with his whole entire body, soul, and spirit. He knew to leave his mind out of the equation because it always got in the way of what he was doing. He gave the audience 100% of himself minus the ego or mind.

The vocals convey the story and the guitar brings the pain.... RIP SRV GOAT

I love you passion for Stevie - it also makes me appreciate his playing more

I've listened to quite a few versions of this same tune, and SRV's playing had so many different approaches. He was ridiculously good!! Probably one of a handful of musicians to be able to play what ever the hell he wanted, with no worries of mistakes. And the FEEL and INTENSITY hasn't been beat!

Totaly agree, this guy not playing guitar, the guitar is a part of he's soul. SRV is a legend.

May have been mentioned here already, but often overlooked is the fact that Stevie’s and Jimmie’s dad passed away a day before this show. Lots of layers here....

I love your enthusiasm for a 30 year old SRV video that many of us have seen a thousand times. The 4K voodoo has cleaned up the grainy old 1980’s footage and transformed it into a format fit to carry his message another 30 years to all new generations. Thanks for the video and the genuine reactions you always convey. 🤘🏼

I really love how easily you can see how much Michael loves music. It's a contagious feeling that people that get into the contents of music often share. I am often moved to tears by these things and it's one of the best feelings I ever get.

No one can murder a note quite like SRV! He is the King!

This makes me so happy to see yo covering Stevie. I love expanding my musical chops into different genres (bluegrass, swing, country), but I always come back to the blues sooner or later, and by back to the blues, I mean back to SRV. He's a constant in my life, when I want (or need) to hear raw, moving, soulful blues played with ferocity, yet just as much tenderness. Love it.

My absolute favorite as well. I play many of his songs in my band.

What is incredible about SRV to me is that he never really watches his fingers on those cords, most of time his eyes are closed and he never never misses a note....he plays with such ease, damn so great a player, taken so soon but never ever to be forgotton.....R.I.P.

The best. Just the best. If I ever need to see how long I can hold my breathe, I will turn this song on because I can barely breathe when he is playing here. He just drives you from point to point and doesn't let you go.

These are the best videos that show stevies talent: A great guitar instructor real time playing the same notes alongside that tell the story of what it is and yet sound nothing like when stevie plays it. Truly a once in a lifetime guitarist, and to me the greatest of all time. Here’s to another 1000 years of listening to stevie🤟

It seems to me that SRV is the most praised among the great music legends than anybody else. For the good reason. You can rarely seen somebody is all in the music, with all his body and soul.

Greatest guitarist of all time. Have you EVER heard SRV miss a note? Yeah me either, every technique is flawless, even when changing guitars after breaking a string he doesn't miss a note, that's UNREAL!

I was just thinking of you doing this song a couple of weeks ago!!! Being from Texas originally, Stevie has always been my fav!!!!

Man, I'll be honest with you.....I have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to theory but when it comes to feel and sound....I'm here, sitting in my chair, holding my guitar, smiling at you, smiling at SRV, drinking a beer and just enjoying both of these masterclasses. Love it!!!!

SRV..dirtiest of the dirty, imo. Just had a natural feel.So much soulful talent wrapped up in that one incredible musician. "Always ascending"..as someone just pointed out. So thankful he had gotten himself clean and was enjoying life. So bummed he died not too long afterwards. Ty so much for breaking it down...love learning about what I've loved hearing all these years! You're excitement and pure joy is so cool to watch!!

Stevie is one of those rare people where the theory of what he plays is a direct reflection of what he FELT when he played.

Stevie put so much feeling into everything he played, great example when he plays “You Better Leave My Girl Alone” you can actually feel the anger he puts into it, amazing.

It's amazing that you can follow somebody so good unique with his style Stevie is the best... fantastic job.

That's why I miss Stevie so much because he was the genuine article... music was a part of his soul and it showed... not like today when so many players try to fake it.. and make you think that they're so Soulful with the facial expressions and throwing their head back ect.. my opinion the only other artist that comes close to the genuine emotion that Stevie had was Marvin Gaye.. Marvin sang like he was in pain... great video

My "Mt. Rushmore" of Strat players might be: Stevie Ray, Jimi, Eric, and Gilmour. Man, SRV was a badass! Lucky to have gotten to witness that power twice! Miss that guy tremendously! Yep, Stevie Ray idolized Albert! That live video of them together in studio is pretty fine! I ain't been the same since I got strung out on Albert back in college! "Lovejoy" "Born Under a Bad Sign" albums stayed on my turntable!

Michael, you nailed it. Your comments about Stevie’s first note and his ability to channel the music are spot on. I first saw Stevie in a small bar in East Atlanta in 1983. The stage was about knee high and I stood right in front of his mike about 3’ from him. As soon as he hit that first note I knew I was in the presence of greatness. As he played, he poured sweat and the music flowed like an unstoppable river for the entire night. I thought to myself, I never got to see Hendrix live (which had always been one of my great sorrows) but seeing Stevie in that venue made me feel like I had seen the same magical force flowing through him like it had with Jimi. Truly one of the greats and like so many, gone way too soon. Keep up the great work. You are providing a unique and valuable service to us music/guitar junkies out here. BTW, I second the requests for Roy Buchanan and Gary Moore. Maybe a compare and contrast of their versions of The Messiah Will Come Again?
