That's because this game was far more fair than Getting Over It. It was REALLY hard to fall beyond your last "safe" area, and pretty much impossible to fall past more than one previous safe area. So it was really more like several mini games that you had to master, but with no worries about having to do all the old stuff over again every time you failed in trying to do the next one.

Ya’know, I don’t really think about it much with these rage games, but Mark is exercising several times the motor control and multitasking of an average person while playing these games and is actually incredibly skilled. How many people can hold what’s basically a one sided conversation interesting enough to hold millions of peoples attention while also planning several steps ahead during a incredibly difficult game that requires precise hand control and near perfect timing, all with the threat of potentially losing hours of progress looming over them? Not many, I’d assume.

Trust me, it is not a NICE challenge. Mark was very strangely good at this game. Like seriously he fucking powered through it. I'd say this game is definitely harder than Getting Over It. Because in GOI the game's easy once you've properly learnt the controls. But for this game, the controls are so simple that most people get the hang of it within the first half-hour. It kinda sucks we didn't see how long it took Mark to finish the game but it took me 9 hrs and holy fuck was it incredibly frustrating at times. If you like foddy-type games then 100% give it a shot on your own but don't expect an easy challenge.

Mark, the concept of beginners luck is very real, except it has nothing to do with luck. When you are doing something blind, you're relying on instinct. In those instances, you either just go with the flow, or choke due to panic of the unknown. When you return to a familiar experience, you're now trying to use past experience as well as react to it, so your brain is working on more things to process. You start hyper analyzing all your movements, the positions of things, try to recall what went wrong with the last attempt while focusing on the present, and psyche yourself out.

18:00 this is actually a documented phenomenon. When you first start something, you have no expectations about how things should be done, so you just do your best and when you mess up, all you think is, "well of course; I only just started." But after you've been doing it for a while, your brain builds up all these expectations that end up actually making you worse. I've found that the best way to combat this is to just take a 5-10 min break when you start to notice the quality of attempts start to go down. When you come back from that break, you will be noticeably better because you've lost that "muscle memory fatigue"

Mark there's actually a saying (although it's usually used in darksouls style games, but it can be applied to broader things) that your two best attempts at beating a boss will be your first and last attempts. This is because (Forgive me if I mess up parts) in your first attempt you're giving it you're best without any idea what you're facing and as such aren't usually as nervous, every attempt after that is learning and it's normal to do worse and and worse and then get a little better, then a little worse over and over until finally, on your last attempt you win. You seem to embody this concept on a subconscious level.

  • @korekdorek

    @korekdorek

    2 ай бұрын

It happens mostly because of impatience. You know you can do it, and you know what you are supposed to do, but you try to do it faster every next time, because in your mind it looks like you already obtained skills important to beat the challenge, but that's actually not true. The first attempt is the best, because you act instinctively. You don't strategize, you don't learn, you only use your already learned set of skills, but you still fail. Because it was close, you get overconfident and stop trying as hard, but someone in a hurry to progress doesn't realize that and fail even more. The cause might be ADHD, but can also be just a character trait. Advice? When you fail too much, go do something else instead and calm down. It always helps and refreshes your point of view.

@@korekdorek This is pretty much it with Mark. I vibe with it on a spiritual level, so I see it in all of the games he plays, because I embody that same lack of patience myself in games. When you play a game that allows you to fail at something and just keep doing it over and over and over, for every new fail, and retry, you create and get into a rhythm. You get faster and faster and faster, but that doesn't mean you get any better. In fact, you often put yourself into a rhythm of failure, because what the task NEEDS is for you to slow down, time your actions, but you've created a habit of failure, and you keep repeating the same thing that keeps causing you to fail. Crash bandicoot is a perfect game that embodies this phenomenon, because everything in its level design is catered in a way that allows you to basically run through the entire level, without ever letting go of the forward button. If you are able to practice a rhythm of success, you'll beat every level first try, insanely quickly (100% the first game just with your morning coffee). However, the slightest misstep, or delay in action, will offset the timing of alllll of the platforming aspects of the level and you will start missing every jump. If you get into the rhythm of that failure, you'll miss the same jump over and over and over, when all you have to do to regain your composure is to just wait for the timing to sync back up again, but we don't wait. We never let go of the forward button.

18:00 My theory about this "phenomenon" : At the beginning, you are fresh, focus and without any pent-up frustration. But the game is difficult and comes a moment (which happens to everyone) when you lose a bit of focus, you're getting more tense, less precise etc. And when that moment comes, you're entering a 'feedback loop' where this frustration feeds your lack of confidence and you start getting more and more frustrated towards the game and yourself, which in return makes you do more mistakes, and so on. Solution: you have to accept that there will always be a moment during the session where you'll get less good, and that is perfectly normal. I feel exactly the same when I play this type of game.

100% agree. Another way to look at it is that during initial attempts our brain adapts to how to do well, and remembers it. But then failure inevitably kicks in because you can't always win and there are too many unknowns in just about anything. When that happens our brain "starts over" and tries to find new ways to win, while ignoring the initial learning (and maybe that initial learning was more correct). After too many attempts our brains end up not having a solid working strategy. TLDR - repeating something over and over again where the results can vary creates this frustration, because we can't seem to learn anything properly.

That phenomenon of your first attempt being the best and the reat of the video being you trying to achieve that again is a real thing. AstralSpiff talked about it in a Peaks of Yor stream - the first and last attempts will always be your best. That struggle point in the middle is when you are trying and experimenting with everything. Its the learning period where you constantly take in information, consciously and unconsciously Those super powerful attempts are your brain applying everything you've learned. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just gives more learning data at another point. The point being: this struggle is a normal thing and you are making progress even when it feels like crap

Same; Dark Souls taught me this a few times. it is that having confidence informs your perceived ability: you can access your skill intuitively, that's flow state. having that confidence challenged connectedly lowers perceived ability and softlocks the flow state from you. it's the knowing that there CAN be a skill issue... that fosters the skill issue. assure yourself you had, have, and will restore the ability and that percentage goes up until you're practically back in the flow state again, it is wild how well I found that works; realize that you can make it until you make it for real.

I saw a post somewhere explaining the "best try is the first try" phenomenon somewhere once. It really is just psychology. In the first try the focus is purely to see how far one can go and to do the best at every little step, with no pressure at all. But during subsequent tries we have the added pressure where we expect ourselves to do at least as good as the first try, or even better since we should have learnt something. This comparison that is often inflated by intense self-criticism means the middle tries when we are learning something new feel the most frustrated. It is eventually when one learns enough that a try with the added pressure goes as good as the first try will one progress past the first try.

Well put! Like others I recently learned about this phenomenon from AstralSpiff's Peaks Of Yore playthrough where he talks about this for several minutes and talks about basically the same concept, and one quote from that that stuck with me is the statement that "your best attempts at anything will be your first, and then your last". The first is free of pressure and full of creativity and freedom, and the last will be the attempt where you have spent many hours after the failed first attempt learning, and finally succeed in what you set out to do for the first time. Your first will be the attempt where you're most free and unburdened, and often get the furthest off of pure flow alone, whereas the last will be the attempt where you've spent so much time practicing that you've got it down to a science and don't need that flow to get through it anymore.

Honestly, this game is too easy, I could do a better job purely on design after watching this video. Mainly it would be putting areas where you fall in places where he grabs often, the player has to have the fear of losing everything in the back of their mind; a good game like this would ensure at least one experience where the player loses a devastating amount of progress. Of course, you couldn't make it too unforgiving since then people would lose interest, so it should tease the player with moments of progress. If this sporadic placement of rewards is done correctly you can get people into a state like Mark was in getting over it, where the memory of progress motivates them to continue playing even though it causes them grief. You have to weaponize the sunken cost fallacy to really inflict psychological torment on players. If you do this correctly you can get most players to spend like 8-9 hours in frustration before they quit; with every download you can feel the hours of human life that your game is stealing from the world.

Honestly, I feel like the difficulty of this game is just right. Like, it's challenging and difficult. But it feels fair, and it's not so difficult to the point where you don't feel like you want to complete it. There are a lot of nice breakpoints and the level design is very generous. Like the fact that you can't really backtrack during extremely hard sections or that there are even safety nets to save you from falling too far. But it's still difficult and feel very rewarding when you finally reach the top.

I am not 100% sure but i think this series was pre-recorded before his break so that he could still post content, but not actually need to dedicate time to a game. It was said in the last video he did before this series "Im tired". I think he mentioned he had a bunch of stuff that had been pre-recorded to post while he relaxed.

Hi there, psychology nerd here. I can explain two things that are going on here. 1) The reason Mark can do something first try but then screw it up later is because the first time you do something, you aren't thinking as hard about it. You have less information about exactly what goes into it and the exact nuances of trying to make it happen, and so the lack of information actually helps you get through it easier by not trying to cater to all the little details and instead just gunning it and doing what you know will work. That's why "beginners luck" is a thing. Less info, less to think about, more instinctive action. 2) The reason that the jump at the top of the climb feels harder, despite technically being easier, is because subconsciously it feels more consequential. Mark may fail the jump at the bottom of the iceberg over and over, but since it takes less than ten seconds to get back, it feels easier because there's less strain to succeed at it. when he climbs around and to the top though, he's now spent about 3 minutes climbing back up and the pressure to not choke makes the jump seem much harder than it really is. These two phenomena also explain why you could struggle with something endlessly the first time through, but then immediately breeze through it on subsequent tries. Whether its gaming, cooking, reading a book, hiking a trail, or any other number of things. Once you get past a difficult task once (i.e. beating Getting Over It), it becomes much less strenuous because the pressure of wanting to not fail is mostly gone. you're now doing it for fun instead of for achievement
