My fiance and I discussed moving to different states. He mentioned South Carolina. I did some research and fell in love. I settled on moving to Greenville. The only thing stopping me was raising the money to move. I'm having second thoughts after reading some of the comments from residents who were born and raised there. You have a beautiful state but it's the people that make it feel like home. Just remember this. You were born and raised in South Carolina but your ancestors came from other countries and settled there. I live in a tourist town but I welcome anyone who wants to move here as a friend I haven't met yet. You should do the same.

I live in East Tennessee and people are moving here in droves. Used to be a nice area but too many people have moved here and it's been ruined just like the Charleston area. They keep building and eating up all the land, widening the roads to accommodate the influx of traffic. Once a nice area being turned into a nightmare right before my very eyes. Heartbreaking

Somethings are obviously different, but the great regentrification that occurred after Hugo in 1989, has greatly improved the area. When I first visited in 1976, it was very rundown, though very affordable. The sad thing (for natives) is that it has lost some of its small town charm, though it is still regularly voted the friendliest city in America! The food scene is drastically improved.

We came to SC in 1981 because of my husband's job & settled in Mt Pleasant. It is now Mt. Unpleasant, trees are cut without thought about the effects, green spaces are disappearing, huge houses are built on small lots so new subdivisions are crammed full- wildlife such as deer and wild turkeys & birds in general have lost their habitats - people complain about deer eating their gardens that used to be the woods where the deer lived. And worse are older black neighborhoods are being destroyed by the greed of builders. The traffic is horrible. A beloved 300 year old live oak- the Meeting Tree was just cut down so a turning lane could be added. If you enjoy heavy traffic, highways getting wider, overbuilding, disregard for the environment. If you enjoy rain, there is flooding in Charleston when it rains -especially during high tide- making it difficult to get to work, this is the place for you. If you like the exciting, keep you on the edge of your seat you will experience during hurricane season & if you like the excitement of a hurricaine that also brings tornadoes, hitting you, - and leaves you without electricity or drinkable water for days along then this is the place for you. You will get a glimpse of beauty and the next day it will be gone. You are more likely to have neighbors from Ohio and to hear a New York accent than to hear the soft, distinct Charleston accent.

It's called "progress" and as long as people have the freedom to pursue building their own lives as they want and are not restricted by the Federal Government, more home building and development will continue. I would rather see new building happening than continued deterioration and decline that is rampant in Democrat controlled cities and states. South Carolina must stay strong and not cave to that mindset if it is to survive and prosper!

We go to Myrtle Beach for Summer Vacation every year since 2015. I must say in just 5 years, I have noticed the amount of housing down there growing tremendously. It is a very long area. North Myrtle Beach all the way down to Murrels Inlet is like 50 miles long. Conway is a popular town which is like 17 miles inland from there. I love all the palm trees every where. I believe it is the most northern city where you can see lots of palm trees. I did notice last year because of the pandemic lots of restaurants were already closed down. Being an area that survives on tourism and summer vacationers, I don't think it would be a good choice for people looking to make a career in the area. However, for retirement, or people who are able to earn a living remotely this would be a great choice. The beaches here are so clean and top notch compared to what I am use to more north.

We've been inundated with northerners in the past couple decades, and It's been a looooong time since I've gotten the "you're not from around here" comments upon hearing my accent. I kinda wish I had those days back. A lot of the people I know fleeing from Illinois absolutely know they are refugees and the only desire they might have to make it like back "home" would just to be to introduce some more food.

I was born and raised on Long Island in the 70s and 80s and now live in Myrtle Beach. I know a LOT of SC natives who don't understand why people from the NY Metro and "up north" in general move to the Palmetto State. Living anywhere between DC and Boston is nothing but pure misery for many reasons. And no I did not bring any liberal voting habits with me. I am a Christian conservative who believes in limited government and low taxes. There are many down here just like me who are VERY well versed in how liberalism destroys a place...

Too crowded in Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties. They need to get some type of rail system to go back and forth to travel daily to and from work. They need to alleviate the road traffic. They need buses traveling to each county throughout the day for work trave. Congestion of traffic is too much daily. Light rail and a bus system is needed to connect counties.

I'm tired of people moving to Myrtle Beach at this moment because our roads can't handle anymore traffic and Hwy 501 is tore up. I used to be able to get to the beach in 15 minutes and now it takes me 40 to 45 minutes to get there on 501 so now I have to take 544 and Jump on 31. We need a highway that goes straight to Myrtle Beach with no lights coming from Conway and it can be called Myrtle Beach Express. That's the only problem I have with all of the people moving here. 😁

I moved near Charleston after living in Arizona for years, it was like heaven moving here with the ocean and beautiful scenery. I feel safer on my walks and more likely to explore nature. The people have been chill with me and don't bother me. I sympathize with people saying stop moving here tho, just wanna say cause I saw a comment that said 'tired of people saying it was better where they came from " well I love it here. I love the history here too. I want to go on a sail boat soon. I think maybe there's something healing about living near the ocean and seeing it in person.

@@TheBillOlson I can't stand when that change (massive hikes in cost of living from Greenville) makes it to where locals who have lived here literally can't afford to live. Also, parking is screwed here. Much prefer Anderson nowadays, even if it's a slower town with less new shineys to play with.
