I found a way to get my “checker board blocks” to easily match. Use the Pellon gridded fusible. You just lay your blocks on each square and turn the panel over and sew 1/4 inch seams on the horizontal and the clip your corners and sew on the vertical. Voila all corners match perfectly! Good luck to newbies as I am one too!

You can do it! The checkerboard portion is obviously made with strip sets. Then you add star points with either flying geese or half square triangles. A bit of quilt math depending on what size you want your quilt to be then you are ready to sew 👍

Do you trim the edges of long sides, the ones that have pinking shear cuts? Those edges throw me off and my strips skew.
@TrueBlueQuilts
Жыл бұрын
I don’t trim those pinked edges. I usually measure my quarter inch from the longest point of the fabric. This is one reason I cut my own strips! That video is here Top 3 Tools for DIY Jelly Rolls - Cut Your Own Strip Sets kzread.info/dash/bejne/fXaOztCYXZfaiaQ.html

@alisonshanahan9529
Жыл бұрын
I saw someone who sewed or tacked the intersections first. She then looked at them to see if they were ok. It's much easier to undo a few tacks rather than a whole seam. I'm currently sewing blocks together and have been tacking them first. I've had to unpick a couple that I got wrong, but it's so easy to sew piece the larger blocks now.
Hi can you please tell me if I should keep the strips 18" long to make the trip around the world & also do I just continue making that same block until I get to the queen size quilt I'm making please and thank you. Awesome video. This will be my 2nd quilt. I really like the simplicity of sewing strips together & keeping the colors to a minimum I have no sense of color coordination it shows in my 1st quilt.
@TrueBlueQuilts
5 ай бұрын
Color choices can be tricky! There is some math involved in figuring out the length of strips and number of blocks. I don’t have a pattern written for a Trip Around the World quilt…for scrappy quilts I just sew until it’s big enough, LOL. Check Bonnie Hunter’s website, she may have more detailed information about it. Happy Quilting!
Do you have a preferred rotary cutter? I’ve bought two that weren’t sharp enough. Ended up with a very sore shoulder.
@TrueBlueQuilts
Жыл бұрын
I use Olfa. Sometimes the blades stick together and you end up with two, which doesn’t work very well, 😂 And, if your cutting mat is old it will affect the quality also.
HELP PLEASE - I sewed an entire jelly roll in sets of 4 strips (many years ago) and want to make a quilt now. What would you suggest? I only had one jelly roll so I will need to add sashings and borders to make it the size I want. I doubt this fabric is even around anymore.
@TrueBlueQuilts
3 ай бұрын
Sounds like you are ready for a Rail Fence type design! You could find a focus fabric that coordinates with the colors from the jelly roll and mix that in as "plain" squares in between the stripes. Have fun with it!
I love the checkerboard but can I use all of the jelly row to do the checkerboard? Confused!
@TrueBlueQuilts
Жыл бұрын
I haven’t done the math for a whole quilt. If you use 4 strips to make a set, that should give you four blocks. There are usually 40 strips in a jelly roll, so that makes 10 strip sets (40 blocks). Then a 6x6 quilt would be about 54 inches square.
