To me, the smartest decision ever made by a character in a horror movie happens in Scream 2 - but it isn't Sidney's at all. After finding out what happened to the former cameraman and witnessing a murder in his own news van, Joel - Gale's new assistant - simply calls a cab and quits the jib, not after telling Gale that she needs her head examined for actively chasing a serial killer on the loose and not returning in the film until the killings have ceased. As he wisely says previously in the movie: "I want to report the news, I don't want to be the news." It's really refreshing to see a character who has basic self-preservation skills in the horror genre.

Yes, but they cocked up by tying everyone too close together after just finding out that it can detach parts of itself and infect through contact. Oh no, no, no. This list is sooo wrong. The very, undisputed, ultimate smartest move by a character in a horror movie was made by Alex in "Wishmaster", by uttering the following words: "I wish Mickey Torelli hadn't been drinking two days ago". An act of total brilliance that not only saved her but literally undid all damage done by the villain. For the last 1000 years, at least...

I just finished watching "Train to Busan" for the first time, and I think that one's got a good contender. The zombies are the "fast-moving" type in that one and are totally relentless, but are only active if they can actually see prey in front of them. They have no short-term memory whatsoever, so as soon as they can't see a human to kill they immediately become benign (provided they can't hear them either). So the protagonist is able to get an attacking zombie off of him by...throwing a coat over its head. It can no longer see him or hear him over the surrounding din and so it stops attacking.

I agree! Some of the characters in Train to Busan make some pretty smart decisions, including putting newspapers up on the window of the train so the zombies will stop attacking, because like you said, they only attack what they can see.

Really the drawing blood scene, I would've gone with Invisible Man's climax where she sets up main villain Adrian's assassination/fake suicide and gets away with killing him by using the 3rd cloaking suit she found and conveniently tucked away during the early half of the film I mean that was great forethought and anticipating on her part she knew even if she got the confession Adrian being the manipulative scumbag that he is would've figured out a way to get off scot free so she decided to set his death up and this was a smart move along with remembering where in the mansion she stored the 3rd cloaking suit I mean as soon as she said "I need to go to the bathroom to wash up" that was pretty much the signal to Adrian's well-deserved death.

In switchblade romance, the main character goes to clean up and hide in a public restroom, and dries the taps after she's used them. That's pretty smart, especially when the killer checks the taps for recent use! It's either subverted or explained by the ending, depending on whether or not you like the movie.

when you think how low budget Evil Dead was, it really makes sense why its one of the best, if not the best. The THING is a remake done right that does exactly what a good movie should do. Here is how you handle 'It Follows'. The movie shows the monster is physically there. Even people who cannot see it can interact with it. Fill a super soaker with diluted paint. Walk around near some police or other witnesses, then spray the invisible thing to show everyone there is something there. There, now the thing is visible, and you can just keep walking or get a ride away from it. Maybe get the military interested to catch the thing for study.

Do a "Smartest Decisions In Action Movies". I nominate Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies. She and Arnold escape the torture hut and the first thing she does is step out of her high heels and leave them behind. Not a lot of attention is even brought to it, but I remember me, my best friend and about 5 other women scattered around the theatre started applauding. Any other action movie, the woman would keep the heels on, causing her to fall and endanger herself and/or the 'hero'. This was great.

For Nightmare on Elm Street smart decision, it helps that Nancy unknowingly had the dream power to drag Freddy out of the dream world into the world of the living. I mention this in another countdown where Nightmare on Elm Street is mention. Its a fan theory of mine that Nancy along with Freddy's daughter Maggie and Laurie from Freddy vs. Jason has the opposite dream power from Kristen (Dream Warriors/Dream Master) where instead of pulling people into their dreams they can willingly pull Freddy into the world of the living, and it would explain why no other protagonist in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies have that power and have to fight Freddy in his own domain.
