    Imagine TR3 being your first TR game, as it was in my case... on the positive side, though, it made me such a tough player that TR1 and TR2 seemed easier by comparison, and playing them was pretty relaxing. TR3 is the sadistic drill instructor who breaks you down, but then rebuilds you as a highly-efficient soldier ;)

    True, I haven't gotten far in TR3 before playing other entries (and actually finished it as one of the latest) but it set my expectation for all the other TRs, with TR3 being "the norm". I guess my perspective might be a little skewed :D

    Same could be said for the Gold in The Great Wall. Don't even know its there when you get to the Zip line and automatically assume that the pit is just there to kill you if you let go too soon, but then if you watch closely you catch a flash of it down below as you glide down just before it's out of sight and unreachable! So you reload, wondering how to get down there with no obvious signs, then you notice the gap below the Zip line starting point. So you make your way down, through the darkness, into the pit of the valley and SURPRISE T-REX! But it's ok, you beat it, it can't hurt you, now you're alone down there and run to the alcove to grab your reward! You've got it! Now time to head back up and SURPRISE! ANOTHER T-REX!! 🤣 Cos Tomb Raider already had a T-Rex in Peru, how can we top it? TWO T-REX'S! IN CHINA! INSIDE THE GREAT WALL! 😂😂😂

    Number 1 is quite logical but i wait for you to explain why. Number 2 is imo the obvious number 1 answer. One of the best pranks that is a bit general while playing classic Tomb Raider is the "all this for that" recipe, how you go all the way through tigers, gunmen, spiders, ingenious traps, oil platform, crazy bitch throwing green balls of fire, shipwreck, pyramid etc. to open a god forsaken door that was literally right in front of you when you started the level. That's genius mockery level. As always, glorious video. Love your voice!

    First off: Happy birthday Lara! 100% agree on your #1. TR3 was the first Tomb Raider game I ever played (I don't know in which year exactly, only that I was very young) and it was so damn hard and confusing! Ultimately (read: only after insane struggles), I managed to complete the India and Nevada sections - apart from a few parts I loved those - but I had to give up in all the other sections at some point. Thames Warf was incredibly confusing to me (and thus I did not like it), but I do remember finishing it: I laughed my ass off when that awesome 'bell' cutscene at the end played ('Happy retirement!'). I did enjoy the setting/atmosphere of Aldwych however, as well as figuring out where to go and how everything connects in the old train station. Then, I got stuck in Lud's Gate... of course haha. In the South Pacific Islands I only remember the first level (Coastal Village) - I liked it, but it was so scary... If I even made it to the second level (Crash Site) back then, then that would have been the place where I gave up because of all the velociraptors, which scared me to death! On 3:31 (#8) I immediately had to think back to a similar scenario in the PC version of Harry Potter 1. In that game you have a large black hole sealed off by a metal gate as the entrance to the Forbidden Corridor. When I first played the game as a kid, my imagination ran wild with what would be 'behind' the black void, but when the time finally came to enter the Forbidden Corridor the metal gate just opened and they did not went through the black void but through a small opening on the side instead, and I was so disappointed! Apparently, the black void was all just for show :(

  • @AxMania

    @AxMania

    Жыл бұрын

    Hahaha, exactly! I think we all had these almost traumatizing experiences with Tomb Raider III 🤣 The bell-cutscene is awesome - It's easily one of my most rewatched cutscenes ever! I'm weirdly glad that you also found Coastal Village to be scary, because that's a level nobody ever really considers as a scary part of Tomb Raider it seems, but it absolutely terrified me as a kid! I couldn't deal with those constant ambushes by the villagers. Yeah, the South Pacific section is actually pretty damn difficult! That sounds hilarious as well, haha! 😂 Why are game designers often such big teasers? It's funny, a lot of these moments I mentioned, really annoyed me as a kid, but nowadays I appreciate them for how humorous and creative they truly are. I love when there's some silly or unfair moment, where it's clear that the game laughs at you, but also that it wants you to laugh along with it. They really liked messing around with us.

  • @MdB92

    @MdB92

    @@AxMania Precisely! Damn difficult ànd scary - a deadly combination for the kid raider I once was haha The villagers indeed, the crocodile in the tunnel near the tree house at the end of the level, and the velociraptors (I was less scared of the T-Rex for some reason) later on made the South Pacific Islands a crazy playing experience for me (maybe it's also due to the large contrast with the beautiful scenery - it's a beautiful environment to be in yes, but also very dangerous/hostile: death truly lurks behind every corner). And apart from all this you also have the troll medipack in one of the village huts, oh Core Design what were you thinking lol

    How about the first time you're not supposed to kill an "enemy"? I refer here to "Bacon Lara". Everything up to this point has trained you to think "see something moving? shoot at it!" Sure, later in the series you get the Barkhang monks, the monkeys in India (who then proceed to turn on you in the following level for no good reason), the prisoners in Area 51, the flamethrower guys in RX Tech Mines, but back in the first game you've no reason yet to think you should let anything live.

    I 90% agree with this list, because we'll never truly know if the devs trolled on purpose or if it's just people's way of seeing it. (Some instances only can be just trying new ideas for level design, period.) But yes, TRIII is the hardest. Also, to me, the most bullying levels are in TRI in all the last levels when they constantly releases hordes of atlantean warriors on you. Hordes after hordes of jumping, screeching, exploding warriors that takes even more chunks of your life away when they die-explode. Those parts were hell when I was a kid, & still are at 36 y.o. whenever I play again. Oh & they constantly push you off ledges it took you a good amount of skills/time to get to: mix that with the scarce save crystals & it's even more unfair. I'll add another comment about dear Lara now.

  • @AxMania

    @AxMania

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I thought about that as well. Some of them are obviously intentional, while others (such as the panther pushing Lara off the edge) are more situational, that don't happen to all players. I thought it was pretty funny nontheless though, because... cats 😃 That's an excellent point. All those mummies unleashed on us were definitely in unfair-territory. In fact, the way the game randomly becomes a horror game in the Atlantis section kind of feels like a cruel prank as well! This was not what we signed up for...

  • @FocusedFighter777

    @FocusedFighter777

    Жыл бұрын

    No I think they knew exactly what they were doing when they put the trigger on that square tile: the player would be looking at the task ahead, elaborating a means to advance; and the black panther would knock us off right into the trap. Enemies have no choice than turn away, so it was inevitable. What I mean of more open to interpretation, is when you mention the small door after using the Seraph. Know that back then, they didnt have lots of spaces in the WADs (where all the enemies and objects are, even Lara & parts of her, guns & items etc), so they were limited in doors as well. They had already used the big double doors, so probably the small one was just what was left, rather than trolling us. I actualy liked the fleshy walls in those parts. (Horror lover here.)

    I agree about TR3! But at one time it seemed to me that this was part of his general style ..) Interesting topic! My personal top 3 mocking in tomb raider: 3. TR 4 I couldn't finish it because I didn't have enough stars at the pyramid level and I had no idea where to look. It was a long time ago and I never got past it. although I consider this game a most real TR because of the atmosphere 2. TR5 Cook on a submarine. I climbed the whole level until my friends told me what to do, I would not have guessed, there was no opportunity to read it somewhere, the games were played for years ...) 1. TR4 game senate ... Many years ago it scared me a lot ... ) Being alone in a confined space for a long time and suddenly this game. I didn’t have a translation, I didn’t understand what it was, the sounds were very scary, a ghost in the wall, a strange piano-like instrument, and he himself moved intermittently, as if someone was nearby, but you don’t see who exactly, the figures are somewhere by themselves moved and disappeared. At the end, with an eerie sound, a hatch opened, where you didn’t want to go at all, or stairs opened. It's still terrible to remember :D

    Those are some great examples actually, especially the cook! I hadn't even thought about that. I'd play one, make it a little ways and then die. Then I'd play another, make it a little ways and then die. I love this List, especially number one What people seem to forget is that the original tomb raider series was notoriously difficult especially the PlayStation 1 versions.Tomb Raider 3 for the PlayStation 1 is arguably the most difficult PS1 game, especially due to its save system and low resolution. This was back in gaming's golden age, where you really had to work for it; without the internet to help. Special mention goes to Lud's Gate, Temple Ruins and Madubu Gorge; those three levels absolutely tested even experienced players. Incidentally all of those three levels ranked very high on your personal list. Once again great video!

    Happy belated birthday, Lara! We share so many both great and cruel moments together, they are almost uncountable. :) Oh, I agree with many of those moments. Interestingly enough I don't mind the long ladder in Diving Area, I rather feel mocked by how obvious the first secret is. :D 10 - I really like this level too! I enjoy the beautiful atmosphere there and the monster scares me as hell. But....what was the thought behind giving us bats as enemies in the last level (technically second to last actually)?! You probably have tons of ammo and stuff in your inventory, and you need it to fight....bats? 9 - The whole TR1 Gold is a big troll in my opinion. Remember the last secret in the second level and the death room there. The sand and sky which kill you for no reason at the end of the first level. The fourth level in general, especially the anticlimactic finish. Terrible. 8 - HAHA I replayed TR2 last year and this caught me off-guard again. I expected something really epic and then...this happens. 6 - Oh, The Last Revelation had some cruel secrets. The other one in Guardian of Semerkhet with the fire holes is also tough. If you do the last hole at the end, they will punish you with Death Beetles. 5 - I actually never heard of that. Where is it available? It kinda looks like a TRLE Custom Level. :D And the falling spikeball just reminds me of "Run Lara Run", a CL I can recommend as No Loads challenge, cool but tough one! 4 - I never saw this actually, somehow my mind always assumed that there's a pit. The first time I saw the intention was in the Raidercast playthrough of Alberto. This just reminds me that I really can't wait for him playing TR3, it will be a lot of fun (well, for us). 1 - You got me here, I couldn't believe there wasn't a single TR3 bully moment yet, and I really appreciate this number 1! Couldn't agree more, it's just one big troll (but a fantastic one!), starting from the slope in Jungle and ending in the helicopter in Antarctica. Even the engine is less reliable here (e.g. grabbing a slightly aslope ledge) and leads to many troll deaths. The infamous "snowflake" in speedruns is also another good example here. Great video again, mate! I already look forward to the next ones. Oh, btw I didn't forget your blockbuster from December, but I just replayed TR3 now and I want to replay TR5 (last remaining) first before I watch a top with *all* levels included. Oh, and Reiley is apparently 26 years old. Have fun!

    Ahhh, good point about the first Diving Area secret, haha! Actually, several of those Tomb Raider II secrets are a bit "Huh, was that it?"-like. 10 - Hahaha, that's a great point. 9 - Oh, yes! You are right. Someone else pointed out the death room in the comments, and that should probably have been featured instead of the panther-entry. 6 - Oh God, yes... the death beetles! That's another good one. 5 - I also didn't learn about this level until last year. It's exclusive to the Tomb Raider Level Editor. I actually don't know what it's purpose is, but it's a fun little level that's surprisingly good! 4 - Hahaha! Agreed! I can't wait for that! Alberto will have a tough time, I already feel bad for him 🤣 1- Hahaha! "Snowflake"? I don't think I know this one, can you explain? 😃 Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! I look very much forward to hear what you think, and think it's a great idea to have all the levels in fresh memory before watching. I'm very curious what you'll think of my placing of certain levels. Hahaha! He is. I cannot believe it. He could pass for 16!!!

    @@AxMania Thank you for your reply! I wanted to rank them on my own, but especially TR4 is a really tough one to cover since most levels are too small and depend on their connected levels. And I hope you finally found peace with The Deck and the Antarctica section, but I doubt it. ^^ Another troll just coming into my mind are the wasps in Tinnos, especially in the PS version with their infinite spawns. The devs really wanted to let the players suffer there. The snowflake thing may depend on how much knowledge you have about Tomb Raider 3 speedruns. In general, you can skip the last section after killing Willard and go directly to the final cutscene. Therefore, you need to cornerbug and "hang" in a certain corner of the chamber (don't ask), then load a save you do at the beginning of Antarctica and swim to a certain tile at the left wall of the level (again, don't ask). You reload the other save and then the credits roll. I think the reason why this works are the same weather effects Antarctica and Chamber use (snow effect), although in theory it could also work with London & India and their rainy effects (I think so at least). Sounds easy, but the issue is that this doesn't always work (just don't ask why). For years already, people investigate what actually matters here, but sometimes it just fails to work. And this can lead to a massive time loss right at the end of a run due to pure coincidence. The engine of TR3 even trolls you there! I'm just curious now, but are you on Twitch? There's a pretty big community for both speedruns and challenge runs with incredible technical knowledge about the games.

    here's the World Record with a (working) snowflake. He even mentioned it and well, you can also see it on the thumbnail :D : kzread.info/dash/bejne/i2VmpMaaY66TYps.html I'm not a big fan of speedrunning in general, but classic Tomb Raiders, and for me particularly TR3, are just something else. Nowadays I'm learning the TR3 speedrun on my own and I hope that I can do some runs as well (not on world record level tho haha).

    Tom Raider III at the top :D can't agree more. I was playing TR IV Alexandria part recently and realised that the mechanical scarab is one big mock - collecting four scarabs to get to it is pain and they've put one "false hole" near the little mech-pyramid, where you'll find nothing but a broken scarab and then there is the secret that you can't get to if you wasted the mech-scarab and of course there is also that completely unnecessary Lara's bronz statue in the same level, which Lara seems determined to destroy as badly as those golden harpies do :D

    9 - Of course I missed an opportunity to jump across when played TR1 UB as a child. The sphinx face is weird... but not as weird as magical instant-killing sand in levels 1 and 2, "unescapable" trap room with disappearing floor that bugs a pair of mummies if you successfully escape it anyway. Not to mention the entrance to cat statue from cat's butt, a lever that extends cat's tongue and a pit near it - to fall inside cat's... gut(?) if a player is careless. 8 - And finally!!! A small wooden door opens XD. 7 - Instead of a bear I initially died because of the very first tiger in TR2. Several times. Then I tried TR1. I was able to jump across the pit, but I was curious. So I cautiously descended into... and died of bear five seconds after. 5 - at 4:55 There is same thing in Catacombs of the Talion shortly after you grab the 1st Tibetan Mask. A pool is now dry, so it's possible to go into it and run to... the next area? - Down to the sneaky spike pit! 4 - it's a shame, but I died here in exactly the same way in my most recent walkthrough. 3 - not exactly. In the era before the "internet is everywhere" a novice player could easily get stuck at the first movable block because there is no in-game tutorial how to move it. So the most scary part remained locked for some time. However I've seen a walkthrough for the first time when my father played. His crooked hands guaranteed that Lara died on every possible trap, and that was an awful experience even as a viewer. 2 - I tried every tile around the Dagger. They all are automatically-opening trapdoors. You can activate multiple and still have to fall down. 1 - simply can't withstand its level design like "Do not go here because it's a shortcut with no return and you finish the level but miss some precious things!" And thank you for including 0:48 in the video!

    9 - Haha, it seems like all ten entries on this list could've come from Unfinished Business! 😅 I think the instant-killing sand is supposed to be sand that's scorching hot from the sun, but then it doesn't make sense why all the sand isn't that hot of course (and why is it so hot during the night!?). 7 - Hahaha! That's how it goes 😥 5 - Core Design did this several times, the bastards! I think the Playable Tutorial One is one of the funniest though, because of the music. 3 - That's a good point, but, still... considering it's the opening level, it's too difficult! 😅 You're welcome, haha! So cheeky of Core Design to put spikes in lava 🤣

    Tomb Raider 3 is such a painful game... During the pandemic, I went like "I WILL finish this game in the legit way". I had some good times in the first level but, as the game is totally broken, I've discovered a way to cheese the first level by accident. And as the other levels went harder, I cheesed the game A LOT by doing shortcuts and stuff. Some levels are nice, especially in Nevada or Pacific. But London is horrible, and the Antarctica... I gave up, as every level was, at minimum in blind playthrough, at least 5 hours of running in circles figuring out where to go next. Seeing this game as an entire mockery is really, REALLY FAIR ! :D

    You brought the wooden door... but the whole shebang of TR2 is that you need a key, to open a key, to open wooden door that you witness in the very first level. That's some next-tier excuse plot, combined with trolling, given all your effort is ultimately to naught and the game might as well just consist of Great Wall, Temple of Xian and then maybe Home, Sweet Home, where angry Italians barge into Croft Manor to get the artifact they were trying to get so hard (rather than avenging their boss) And if one starts to really overthink it, the reason Great Wall is so unforgiving is that's the end game area. You just happen to start the game there.

    You know, I honestly expected Nevada to be on the top spot. because, beating the first section removes every single med pack, weapon and ammo from your inventory. And I was unaware and still am if you could get your stuff even back. The sad part? I used to own the german guide book, I still do. You are not warned there that Nevada will remove all your hard collected stuff from your inventory. And so many cheap deaths you could get. The first both? Get hit once, die. The final boss? Get hit once, die. I think I notice a pattern here. I never, ever, made it through Antarctica on that file. Needless to say, I had to replay it with Nevada being the first stage I'd select after the jungle. I even skipped as many secrets as possible because the entire game was just so hard! I find the inaccessible items in Atlantis, Temple of Xian and Coastal insulting. Some how, in TR3 hacks and randomisers, Winston is able to survive in the water forever, but still get hilariously jostled backwards. Plus that underground ladder in TR4, the area where you encounter the Minotaur, is especially insulting, because once you spawn the Minotaur and go down that lower level with the tall ladder, you cannot get back out, because the shockwaves from the Minotaur’s mighty hammer knocks you off the ladder. So it’s a good idea to save before you spawn this demigod creature and have multiple save files. Because you won’t progress at all if you make that mistake.

    #CrushinOnWinston 😆🤣 I know it’s not exactly dangerous or anything, but one that really got me was the switch next to the gate in the first game, towards the end of City of Vilcabamba. Where you see a bear running around in the room behind the gate. I spent a good 5 minutes building up the courage to pull the switch, expecting the gate to open and the bear to come wizzing through, talking the bear in the face! I was so shocked when I pulled the lever and a trap door opened dropping me into water 😁

    I had a good laugh (TRIII is spot on as #1!!), but some other good contenders would be the elusive medipacks that are either unobtainable (Temple Of Xian and Palace Midas -unless you use the corner bug-) or used as bait for a sadistic trap (Atlantis). I’m not sure if the ‘death room’ of Temple Of The Cat would count as Core Design tried to warn us with the wall designs… 😇

    The first time I have played TR 2 in the 90s I thought I have forgotten "to use" the Seraph in Tibetan Foothills and carry from now on the Seraph for the rest of the game. And as I saw that the Seraph was intended just for a small door in the next level I thought: WTF???? I have a grenade launcher! I don't need to travel around the globe for a key!

    The biggest mockery is the gun cabinet in TR2 (as a tutorial). Closed door that you can't open because there is no key. So you can't get the pistols, or the shotgun, or just the satisfaction to get inside. But joke's on you, there is no gun cabinet to begin with, because as a room it only exists in the final level. In the tutorial there is only a small, empty space. So all the time spent looking for a key, and later to mod a way to get into the room, was all for nothing.

    I don't think your reasons for liking (& loving) her would be pathetic. Maybe you need us to tell you our reasons first: My best & strongest heroine even since I was a kid, she still is and I still play the early games, & still enjoy them fully. I used to draw her so much too. She is smart! Knowledgeable (the way she knows her tomb, artefacts and forgotten languages: she had to work for that too.) She plays for sport! She has a F training ground in her backyard, I'd love that. She is independent. She is calm, cool & collected. I love the way she looks, moves, sounds and the way she gears up. She's such a badass in many ways, and her fan base wont ever die: even today there are many fans like me that still build levels with the Tomb Editor! My admiration & love for her will never die. (And you cqnt be pathetic unless you're just all about bewbs & @$$ like a lot of men are, then to ME that's very pathetic. And no respect should be given back if those guys cant see Lara/women as human beings.)

  • @AxMania

    I agree with everything here. I didn't mean for it to sound like my reasons for crushing on her were pathetic, rather that a video about my unrequited love for her would be 😉 And I agree, being in love with Lara only for her boobs and ass would definitely be pathetic 😛

    @@AxMania Okay. Still, nothing to be ashamed about, don't we all fall for fictional characters at some point? I have a few. You're human too. Oh and again, I really enjoyed your humor. Btw, you ever tried any fan-made levels? If you think TRIII is painful, some of those levels are pure torture (personally I dont like them because playing is supposed to be fun, not having veins exploding), but if you love to suffer, those Challenging levels would be for you. They're the kind that you have to be absolutely pixel-precise in finger-twisting acrobatics and have impossible timed-runs etc. If I have to reload 10, 20 or 30 times to make a jump sequence etc, then there is something wrong with the level design. THAT'S when I think the builder created a level just to troll: to kill players constantly. Core Design was very mild about it. One of such site is TRLE. (downloads might trigger your anti-virus but these are false positives I assure you.)
