    Good analysis. Imagine if we got something like TR3 today, and there would be a 15 minute cut scene explaining the artefacts and their powers... Environmental storytelling and "show, don't tell" is definitely more fun. And regarding "Is Lara affected by the artefacts?" -- I think not, as she does not use them. My theory is that using them creates some kind of symbiosis.

    I’ve literally thought this myself for so long! 😂 I personally think, in a way, they might of effected her. They tend to drive people a bit insane or make the person addicted to the artefacts and Lara did go on a killing spree to obtain them all after being exposed to the first one in India; killed anyone who was in her way including military guards and innocent museum guards just to get the artefact 👀 we could just say Lara is good and was just doing a job, or went after Willard in the end to stop him, but you never know, maybe the artefacts got to her a little and she didn’t want anyone else having them except her, locked away in Croft Manors trophy room

  • @AxMania

    Yeah, haha! I've thought about this for a long time as well. If Core Design intentionally made Lara a bit more vicious, because she runs around with the Infada Stone in the entire game, then that's just an incredible attention to detail, since they never make it a point to specify that.

  • @marcusfossa6695

    But I think if Lara was corrupted by the artifacts she would have used them like the bosses in the game did. Instead, she used her guns for everything and never dared to summon the power of the artifacts. She knows if she uses the artifacts she will be corrupted. Then there's also a point in the first game where she destroys an artifact by shooting it because she is revolted by its power and evil. I think Lara is the ultimate incorruptible antihero.

    An old theory of mine is that the four meteorite artifacts represent the classic four elements - fire, water, air and earth, with the Hand of Rathmore representing some unknown "fifth element" (which could be time, thus explaining the "time rift" phenomena in TLA). One argument in support of this theory is the four elemental tests in the Lost City of Tinnos - one had to prove worthy to the elements themselves before being granted access to the shrine (the meteorite cavern). The Infada Stone seems to be fire, considering Tony's burning powers, and the Ora Dagger could be air, considering Puna's lightning bolts and the ability to conjure lizards out of thin air. The hand of Rathmore was kept separately due to its peculiar nature... or maybe it was the artifact of a "heretical" sect of ancient priests, exiled from Tinnos?

  • @AxMania

    @AxMania

    Yes, I thought about this as well! I guess The Eye of Isis is water, as water is life. The Element 115 must be earth then. It's a shame we never got to fight an Element 115-jacked up Area 51 super soldier inside the UFO, so we could know for sure. Interesting theory about the Hand of Rathmore, but what the hell is that meteorite in France then?

    Tony murdered the other two guys using the artifact and then went mad with power. Sophia turned people into faceless cripples and tried to find everlasting beauty. Man I love this type of lore and fan theory videos, when I first played the classic TR's as a kid I couldn't make much sense of the story, since I'm not a native English speaker, but also because they are kind of cryptic as to what the artifacts (the Scion, the Seraph, the Dagger of Xian, the meteorite fragments) do, and why Lara is after them. You never get a thorough explanation about them, nor about Lara's motivations, so you kind of just push forward with these tidbits of plot information. But that's in fact the charm of old TR's, Lara is just ruthless when it comes to getting what she wants, and saving the world from destruction is only an afterthought. Like action heroes from 80's movies, plain and simple badassery and a good adventure.

  • @AxMania

    @AxMania

    Thank you so much! I'm exactly the same, I didn't understand all the details of the plot until in very recent years. That's part of what was awesome about games back then, the games gave you something for your imagination to build upon. Nowadays there are plenty of cutscenes to explain everything in video games. Haha, that's very true. She certainly is a hero, but her motives are not so black and white ;)

  • @hansflammenwerf1534
    @hansflammenwerf1534 Жыл бұрын

    Great deep dive, as always! I love how you add depth and meaning to the stories from the classic games - it's all there for those willing to look and think about it, even if it's told implicitly and not explicitly. Please do something like this for each game's story and artefacts! Personally, I like to think that Element 115 which somehow ended up in North America was found and taken by whoever the Roswell aliens were, but then their UFO crashed in 1947 when they tried to fly away with it. The American military then confiscated the UFO and alien bodies, taking them to Area 51, and thinking the meteorite artefact belonged with the UFO, not knowing it actually came from Antarctica.

    A fantastic video. From the explanations about the side effects caused by the influence of the artefacts, to the humour itself, this video is simply awesome. Lara may have been able to neglect the influences of the artefacts due to already being a wild beast on her own (remember that after the Himalayan crash found in the manual for TR1, she became a whole new person. Seeking adventures and not wanting to stay at home for too long). Also that Turkish dude from 1989 might have been influenced by the artefacts before they were introduced to the world in 1998.

  • @AxMania

    @AxMania

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you SO much for your kind comment, I really appreciate that! I think you are completely right, all the various users of the artefacts were seeking something, Lara doesn't seek anything, really, besides adventures around the world. So there was nothing for the artefacts to exploit, so to speak. LOL, I think you might be right. There's some Infada Stone-like energy going on in that performance!

  • @Potkanka
    @Potkanka Жыл бұрын

    Wait I love this theory! She's unusually murderous in TR3 (at least when it comes to *who* he murders) so the Infada Stone influence, which just happens to be the first meteorite artefact she finds, would make sense! And yeah I also thought maybe weak will might have something to do with it, but she didn't go completely mad so it could be simply that she's affected to a much smaller degree. (She offers help to the Aussie soldier for example.) When she's used to killing people in droves already, killing more innocent people isn't *that* big of a stretch compared to someone who never killed anyone. And she was never a paragon of morality. So yeah, I love the Infada Stone influencing her in TR3! Maaaybe not the other stuff from other meteorites, like transforming her XD I've never acutally put together all the different powers the artefacts have to see if they have a clearly defined attributes, I just assumed they are all the same, but everyone used them differently, but with some of the stuff, like the Infada Stone influencing others by simple proximity, yeah maybe they are different. Could it be the shape? Like, instead of hardware in a computer, it's the shape that gives the artefacts some function, some "programming"? I also love the Hand of Rathmore bending time, that's a very cool idea! (Now connect it to the Iris which seems to have teleporting powers... I mean I already headcanon that the Iris can be used for space-time travel, but now with the Hand in addition, it could be that matching them together is what makes a time-travel machine!) Just one thing about Mauki, the leader born without a face - that happened in Antarctica, so it's not a particular Ora Dagger power. I actually find it super interesting how facelessness keeps appearing again and again in the plot. The Damned are faceless, it's explicitly stated. Puna wears a mask, also probably faceless. And the mutated people in Antarctica - the more mutated versions we see, the less of a face they have. Those giants in Tinnos have no face. It seems like a "natural" consequence of any of the artefacts. As for The Damned and immortality, I think all are immortal. Bob says: "One of them Egyptian lassies there is a bit pissed off, like, that she didn't get immortality the way she wanted it. And seeing as we'd done better than her in that department, I didn't care to imagine what curse we could get given any worse than we've got already." Which indicates they all are that way. Also he gives Lara a consolation that she'll die easily, which would be weird if only he was immortal and not the rest. I headcanon it in a way that while she downs them with her guns, they will eventually get up again, because they are immortal but not invulnerable, so they baiscally have to "heal" or something. Which, depending on the damage she causes, might take weeks or months, idk. By the way what's your source on Sophia being at least 150? Like, she's old, but I can't think of any other source than John (the assassin) saying that his grandfather already worked for her, but that's not that specific. Oh! And the Hand of Rathmore being from another meteorite! You know I just thought the artefact was found in Antarctica by someone else (maybe even by Willard some time after the intro cutscene?), but I never took into account the second meteorite Sophia calls up. Huh... Something tells me she didn't have time to drag it from Antarctica, so another meteorite made from the same material is very plausible! Oh geez, oh geez, and the two meteorites are so big, you could cut so many artefacts in so many shapes from them, it could turn into the world's own magic system in a way :D (No but it's an endless fanfic material - want an artefact with specific powers for your story? One (two) convenient source(s) is (are) already here! Take the meteorite and start carving!) I loved your analysis, it was so much fun and so intriguing! These artefacts could easily carry a whole trilogy by themselves, with so much that can be done with them!

    Hi Potkanka! I love your comments because they are so rich with Tomb Raider lore. Seriously, thank you. They are always a blast to read. I've never changed my opinion so much on a video since release, as this one. I feel like this video, more than anything else, deserves a "remake" some day, because I've become so much more enlightened on the subject since reading many of the comments for it, since I released it. I think I'm completely in the wrong with how each artefact is different, but I thought it would be a cool idea to present the five artefacts as being different before I released it. Now I'd probably just argue, that different owners somehow bring different aspects of the artefacts out. Yes, I always thought Mauki was one of the rulers on Kuru - I'm so stupid! Again, there are a lot of things I'd do differently in this video. Good point regarding the Damned btw. Who the hell is that "Egyptian lassie" btw? I've always thought that bit in his dialogue was strange. Is she a woman who just doesn't want to live with the other former test subjects, or who is she? She's not anywhere in the Lud's Gate level. Would've been cool if we encountered an angry female Damned-looking enemy in the museum. I always figured Sophia was 150 because the Eye of Isis made its' way to England in the late 1830's or so, and I figured she stole it around that time. Sure, she could've stolen it from a museum "only" 50 years ago. It could be either. Thank you so much Potkanka. My analysis is clearly not perfect, and it has a lot of holes in it, so I think a re-release some day, with some corrected information, would make it better. But thank you!

  • @Potkanka

    @Potkanka

    @@AxMania Haha thanks as well! And maybe there are things you want to change, but I think the artefacts having different powers isn't so impossible. As you pointed out, only Infada Stone seems to make others aggressive, for example. Or it's possible that all have the same powers, but some powers might be more amplified? If I go back to my idea about shapes, what if the fact that the Infada Stone has such a big "bulk" (it's more compact, fewer little pieces sticking out) could cause it to radiate energy differently - for example by the time the energy manages to get itself out, it transforms into something that makes organisms act with aggression? Or what if all the artefacts, while still back in Antarctica, were somehow "treated" with different substances, amplifying different properties? The engravings on them look white, it might be some different material? The Egyptian lassie! I have an old TR3 script, there are some things different from the final verison (such as the cathedral as the 2nd level), and there is: "In here, she will collect the embalming fluid from the Egyptian section and come across the vengeful spirit that Bob spoke of." So basically a scrapped enemy that managed to stay in the cutscene dialogue. (Funny you mention a female Damned member, one of my TR OCs is a daughter of one of The Damned, which is why I pay so much attnetion to them :D ) Ah I see! Yeah Sophia could have stolen it whenever, we don't really know... No matter how perfect or not your analysis is, it sure made me think and realize some things!

    You're welcome! As for the nature of Sophia's experiments in The Lost Artifact, I'm gonna go out in a limb here and say she's doubling down on her previous agenda. In real life, plenty of marine animals possess what can only be described as superpowers. Regeneration, toxic immunity, and even - yes - biological immortality (i.e. the Immortal Jellyfish).

    Great video! These artifacts really are my favorite mcguffins in the series. The desperate pseudotheories at the end were savvy and obvious, I loved it. I always appreciate your content. That said, I wrote this to user Theragotz in French last month about the Hand of Rathmore, maybe you could find some use for it: > Later headscratching made me wonder the following: > That said, I suspect you're on to something about how the Hand may come from a different asteroid. If it happened once, twice, with Area 51's UFO being compatible with it plus the UFO being on Earth at all, this can't be random. Maybe Earth regularly takes a rain of those in the face on an astronomical level, and whoever built the UFO knew that. But, I'm pretty sure the actual devs back then didn't really plan things this deep, but it's no less enjoyable to think about it sometimes.

    This is incredibly interesting, thank you so much! I feel annoyed now, that I didn't consult you before I made this video. I would've loved to have included this theory. Everything you say makes perfect sense, and it's a brilliant way to explain how exactly the Hand of Rathmore works and fits with the other artefacts. Looking back, I should've put more emphasis on the strange warped world the artefact turns the zoo into in the Reunion-level, which definitely could entirely take place within Lara's head. Again, thank you so much. I'm saving this comment in a doc, so I can use it if I one day decide to elaborate on the Hand of Rathmore theory, if that's ok? You'll be credited of course :)

    @@AxMania Absolutely, go for it! I'm glad that can help. If you think about it, Tinnos as the lost city can serve as the Human/Craft element, hence why you don't need the Hand per se around the crater. It's litterally hidden in plain sight, but this is more like speculation at this point. I think there is nothing wrong with making an addendum video, if you want. But if you do, make sure you proof check things properly as usual :). Keep up the great work!

    14:08 except according to lore that actually happened before The Angel of Darkness, but not because of the artifact obviously... Though influence of Infada stone and Eye of Isis actually make sense. Lara indeed might not be aging that fast, and she actually somewhat messed up in TR3 and after. Not only she's way more aggressive in TR3, she actually disregarded all her principles and carelessly robbed the tomb of Seth ignoring all warnings and releasing the god of chaos himself. I mean yeah, probably writers didn't think about that, and actually wanted to show how overburn she got by her work of life (kinda reflecting their own state while developing TR4), and how because of that her passion to the history and spiritual value of the items she retrieve slowly fading away, but it makes perfect sense if all that was at least partially caused by Infada stone. Ora dagger don't have an instant effect on the carrier since mutations it provokes probably showing up only after a long period of time and only after prolonged exposure to it and Rathmore's hand affect the environment around it rather than the carrier itself. And she probably used Element 115 to save on electricity bills, idk... I totally would have, have you seen those prices!?

    That was a really great theory. Some of my head canon: The effects of all 4 artifacts are present in the city of Tinnos. Mutant guards appeared as a result of the influence of the meteor core (evolution on steroids, exactly what Willard wanted). Fire and lava are somehow underneath the world's largest ice shield - that's the Infada Stone. Endlessly spawning wasps with green(!) glow - Ora Dagger's ability to summon living creatures. Mutants seem to have been around since ancient times and are hard to kill because the Eye of Isis gave them immortality. And of course they are all trigger-happy because of the Infada Stone. That leaves Element 115. I tried to figure out the main theme of the Nevada levels - there is a plane, a rocket, an electric train, a UFO that the US government is trying to launch - oh, and you also arrive at Area 51 in a truck. Vehicles and engines. And I think... Element 115 is about perpetual motion. No wonder the US government is studying it in a top secret area usually associated with military vehicles. As if the world's largest military-industrial complex wouldn't want bombers or missiles that require no fuel? And how does this power manifest itself in Tinnos? Traps. Swinging braziers that never stop, blades that rotate underwater, whatever those stone heads are that keep moving and spitting fire...

    Man, As soon as I saw the title of your video, I realized you had put your finger on something. I mean, in this game, Lara is really wild without any valid reason justifying her bloodshed so much so that I wondered at times if she was not the real big antagonist of the game. I think I already said it in another video but for me, the final boss, Doctor Willard was more a victim of Lara than a big bad guy: He flees a Lara who directly tries to kill him right after a passionate discussion and this is what pushes him to transform himself to try to save his life. And with this video, you made me understand that yes, if Tony has gone mad, it’s probably because of the artifact and that if he has become mad at him, there is no reason for Lara not to become mad too. Another thing that supports this theory is the behavior of the monkeys: in the first level, they are relatively nice, they just want to steal objects and even show paths to Lara. But from the second level which is the birthplace of the artifact, they become aggressive and attack on sight. And they continue to be like that because they are in the wake of Tony and the effect of his artifact in the next level. I saw in the comments that this was not possible to the extent that Lara would use its powers but I think that Lara knows how dangerous the artifacts are and avoids exploiting them unlike Tony, who, out of curiosity, has tried his power, Thus sealing his destiny in a madness much stronger than that of Lara who just naturally became more aggressive and who, I think, didn’t even realize that the artifact affected her that way. Anyway, your video reassures me a little: Lara is not just a psychopath willing to do anything to recover artifacts, It was really the artifact that drove her crazy, and hopefully that madness eventually faded once she sealed it somewhere in her house.

    Yes, exactly! I think this is so fascinating, and it's an awesome example of fantastic environmental storytelling in Tomb Raider III. None of this is explained to the player, it's just observable, and I love that. She's definitely crazier than usual in Tomb Raider III. That game is Lara Croft at her most unhinged. Sorry for the late reply! Sometimes comments don't show up in my KZread Studios app, for whatever reason.

    Even though the Eye of Isis made Sophia "immortal," she could still be killed by being electrocuted with high-voltage current. Given that Bob lives right next to a disused Tube station with live high-voltage rail lines running through it, he would surely have attempted to take his life at some point by that method, and presumably been successful as well? It's almost like a game rushed out at the behest of a greedy publisher has plot holes in it...

So the researchers are hostile, but in the end of the level, Doctor Willard take them away. In RX-Tech Mines, the guys with the flamethrowers are not hostile. Coincidence? Interesting ideas, but I find it unlikely that artifacts fashioned from the same meteorite each have different innate powers. It's more likely that the artifacts respond differently depending who wields them. Unless the Polynesians who fashioned the artifacts had magical powers themselves, that allowed them to influence what each artifact could do. The Ora Dagger seems to grant immortality too, as Puna is suggested to have been around long enough to give birth to a cult and civilisation that worships him. And they can all be used to create energy projectiles.

  • @AxMania

    Yeah, it makes no sense that the artefacts are so different from each other, but it also doesn't really make sense that a random scientist can use it to shoot fireballs and stuff, while some businesswoman can use the very same material to make herself immortal. It's true though, that they all probably do the same, and are just used differently. I'm not sure about Puna, since the man Lara meets mentions a "previous ruler". I've always just assumed that Puna is the current ruler in a lineage of several rulers.

    @@AxMania I thought the 'previous ruler' was back when the tribe lived in Antarctica. My understanding of the timeline was along the lines of: 1) The Polynesians find the meteorite and craft the artefacts. 2) After the effects of the artefacts become apparent, the majority of the tribe leave Antarctica, abandoning the artefacts and the most severely mutated people. 3) The Beagle comes to Antarctica, and the crew take the artefacts. 4) The Beagle comes to Kuru Island. Smythe is killed and eaten, and Puna claims the Ora Dagger, which keeps him alive and in power for over a century. 5) Lara comes to Kuru Island, kills Puna, and takes the Ora Dagger.

    I know I'm like a week late and I don't normally go here but I thought I'd chip in my 2 cents for *logistics* in a video game XD I understand that, for continuity reasons, the artifacts are in Lara's inventory, implying they're in her backpack. However, in the Antarctica levels, when she meets with Willard in his cabin (who hired her to find the rest of them, by the way, and has a guy posted just outside the cabin ready to kill her? Talk about making it obvious you don't want to finish the deal, man), she has them in a separate bag, slams it on the table, and questions him. Wouldn't this imply that she *doesn't* carry them around the whole time?

  • @AxMania

    That's a very good point, haha. Maybe? She doesn't even carry that bag throughout the Antarctica level though, which doesn't make sense :P There seems to be an issue with a plot hole or two in Tomb Raider III. Also, Lara's backpack in itself is a mystery. How can she fit those huge four artefacts, as well as 30 medi packs, a bazooka, an assault rifle, and 20 packs of flares in that little thing?

    As much as I love tomb raider 3 (One of my top 10 classics,) even I realized it was strange that Lara was seemingly uneffected by the artifacts. Positively or negatively. I guess the developers just didn't think that far ahead or didn't care. Still, if something is radioactive (or worse considering it is alien to earth in origin) enough to instantly mutate a person or drive them insane, not to mention dissolve, melt or morph your surroundings (hand of Rathmore was scary,)obviously it would mean Lara, who physically picks them up with her bare hands and carries them in her tiny, regular backpack for days, should have been effected by them, and far worse than Marie Curie. But it's a game and...it's Lara Croft haha.

  • @AxMania

    Yeah, very good point. I think so too, they just didn't think too much about it. An argument that can squash most inconsistencies in the games ;)

    @@AxMania Course that's not to say things aren't left for deeper meaning in the game. The dinos and lizard men in the south pacific seem implied to have been mutations by the ora dagger. Then there's the shiva statues, which I theorized may have been the infada natives themselves mutated by the stone. (Recall the hand of rathmore petrified the people Sophia Lee kept caged in her undersea lab.) Then of course you have the aliens, whose ship used the "element 115" as a power source. Makes you wonder if the meteor came from where they came from. Then if you wanna go full crack theory, it could be implied that the artifacts are sentient, either by an alien force or by gods the Polynesians may have sealed in the stones, which could explain each one's different effects and the four oceanic deity masks you use to unlock the crator.

    Personally, I don't think they affect Lara because of her adventures finding the Scion. Remember, that was also an artifact that could mutate and/or advance civilizations; and although it was in Anniversary where she had the chance to join Natla, I feel like it was implied to the original as well because she proved vigorous and challenging to Natla. I think Lara, being a true archeologist, sets her mind on understanding humanity in the past, present, and future. While watching the rapid decay of Natla's mind/heart, and Marco Bartoli's obsession for dominating powers, she becomes even more human and only sets out to stop the abuses of these powerful artifacts... Which also raises a question.... Could these artifacts be giving her the power to do just that???

I remember in Legend, her taking part of Excalibur from Queen Viracocha's tomb and saying "I am only taking this because it is needed." She even compliments the Goddess and asks for a blessing. Which makes me feel like it solidifies the theory even more because she pays her respects in each crossing.
